The junior board ' s main objective was to raise $3000 through fund- raisers, such as candy sales, flower sales, and the Prom. With the money raised in ' 84, the junior board is looking forward to a memorable graduation. Other accomplishments include their victory in the First Annual Board Softball Tournament. As president, I feel that the junior board is one fine group to work with. We should see great success in the following year. — Andrew Wong FRONT ROW: J. Nishikawa, M. Wright, IV Loo, K. Noonon, K. Introducing Student Life . . . o o o o o Student Life is a general view of the things that come, go, and stay when one is o student at Carl- mont. It reflects our general lifestyle and stays away from specifics. The section is designed to sum- marize the 1983-1984 school year from every point of view. With Student Life, we hope to plant a memory you ' ll cherish for years to come. In the morning . . . It ' s jusr like a commercial break, man. Dang! Suddenly, the peaceful darkness is gone, the volume is up, and the gears are churning once again. Through squinting eyes you glimpse an ominous and dark figure at your bedroom door. The figure disappears down the hallway before you can focus on it. Perhaps with a curse you wipe that nasty crap from your eyes, and in one fluid and practiced movement drop your feet to the floor. In the mirror you see someone else ' s face. It only takes the head-on impact of a couple of walls to tell you you ' re awake, my friend. You know it ' s only rock and roll, but you like it. Like it? Yes, you do. Ten minutes later, the tunes are permeating your screwed-up adolescent heod before your brain gets the chance to really work. You dance over to the mirror, ignoring your applauding fans, and give yourself a big smile. That ' s you fer sure, man! On an album cover, that face would increase record sales by the millions. You know it. Slightly tilting your head back for dramatic effect, you tense both pairs of cheek muscles and say: Y ' know, some guys my age, man — they ferger about drinkin ' milk . . . Then you ' re singin ' again, until everything ' s ready. Boy, you feel good! Now then, off to . . . school! Oh, man! First Period First period, the closs where your body is just storting to refomiliorize itself to the every- day schedule. It ' s the period where you are stuck with o hard, boring, stubborn teacher, who demands the night ' s homework upon entering the room. If you ' re not late, you hope Mr. Teacher has a movie planned so that you can catch up on lost night ' s lost sleep, or do another class ' s homework, so con- veniently forgotten during the nightly movies. For the few and the proud who have a first-period teacher that is kicked back and easy, here ' s to you! But the fact still remains that the morning ' s struggle to keep those tired eyes open and to move faster than your average snail is still there. Toward the end, ears are listening as the seconds tick so slowly away, burning those long minutes which will signify the end of first period, a victory for the day! At last, one class less, and another agonizing morning into the history books of your mind ' s diary! 11:58-12:48, Lunch! Your stomach growls ond rurns on its side. You watch the clock stop 10 seconds before the bell to set you free from your fourth period class. Ding, and they ' re off! A mod sprint for their cars, to beat the lines at McDonald ' s, Wendy ' s and other places where you get a meal you could lube your car with. Meanwhile, a small sta mpede is heading for the student union to buy enough burritos to feed Tiajuana for a month ond give the junkfood in- dustry a big boost. After half an hour of chewing the fat (literally), people suddenly realize that the tardy bell has just rung and every classroom door has simultaneously slammed shut. You make another mad rush from the student union to your fifth period class, only to be marked tardy for the sixth time this week. 95 Nuts ro homework. The United States Marine Corps was on the move. President Reagan ordered the invasion of Grenada Island where it was discovered that Soviet and Cuban military advisors were construct- ing o strategic military base. In Lebanon, we were part of an international peace-keeping force, which was unsuc- cessful. During the occupation, many Marines lost their lives protecting the U.S. embassy in Beirut and our headguarters or the Beirut airport, which suffered a disastrous terrorist attack. We abandon- ed the attempt to keep the peace and headed for the Persian Gulf, where the Iran-lrag Wor was escalating, threaten- ing the world ' s oil supply. The Russians didn ' t hesitate to protect their airspace. A Mig shot down a Korean 747, killing over two hundred passengers. Flight 007 brought the world ' s attention to the escalation of hostility between the free ond com- munist worlds. In the area of nuclear arms, Russia put talks in a possible freeze. There was a growing world con- cern for a possible DAY AFTER. ' ' In the Soviet government, Andropov died and Cherenkov became the new leader for rheU.S.S.R. Back on the home front, the U.S. was gearing up for the 1984 elections. Reagan and Bush were running for a second term, but the big guestion was who would head the Democratic ticker. John DeLorean was arrested by the F.B.I, for selling cocaine. The growing concern about Acguired Immunity Defi- ciency Syncrome (AIDS) frightened the country, especially the gay and emergency hospital care areas. Food and drink companies were replacing sugar and caffeine with synthetics like asperrame, but doctors were concerned about the possibility that they caused cancer. Naturalists could breathe easier, because Secretary of the Interior Watt resigned. On the space frontier, NASA launched its tenth space shuttle flight. Previous flights put the first female in space and sent astronauts into free flight, unattached to the space ship. Prince Charles and Diane were ex- pecting their second baby. Michael Jackson made it big with hit songs and videos. Boy George launched a career for the Culture Club. A whole new era in music arrived on television in the form of videos. Paid T.V. hit the big world of business, and VHS recorders and players brought money to the movie indusfry. As for weather, deep freezes and floods crippled the Mid-West. The East was cool and snowy, below freezing most of the winter. Winter in fhe West was warmer and drier. Summer temperatures were normal, but cold temperatures arrived early. In the economy, we didn ' t know if it would keep rising or droop once again. A few companies failed, but the stock market reached a new high. And that ' s fhe way if was . . . this has been the CHS World Headline Report. t, Calif. Summer 1983 to March 1984 Business Unemployment and inflation drop- ped considerably, yet remained unstable. Some companies, especially airlines, had a difficult year, and some were forced to declare bankruptcy. Labor unions also took a beating. Strikes proved ineffective, and many strikers were replaced by non-union workers. The companies ' actions were held up by the U.S. Supreme Court. Prices, as usual increased. Movies hovered in the $5.00 range, candy cost 35 to 65 cents, and the average soft drink stood between 40 and 65 cents. Sports The Giants had a lousy ' 83 season and are hoping for the best in ' 84. The 49ers were also disappointed, but not until the season ' s end, when they lost in the last minute to Washington. They played well but often irregular as a team. In the World Series, the Orioles took the pennant. For the Super Bowl, the Raiders beat the Redskins by more than a comfortable margin! The Winter Olympics wook place in Serajevo, Yugoslavia. The U.S. did well in Alpine events, winning a record three gold medals. In the Bay Area Highway 1 at Devil ' s Slide still causes problems. This important road could slide permanently into the oceon if abnormal wet winters persist. Children mysteriously disappeared. Kevin Collins, the one most publicized, had his description circulated on millions of posters nationwide. The hope for his return was dim. The 1984 Olympics in L.A. will bring some games to the Stanford Stadium. Officials desperately prepared for the team arrivals at the San Francisco Airport, and for the large crowd which will fill the stands. Mayor Feinstein of S.F. pushed for a new sports stadium downtown or a dome on the windy Candlestick. San Francisco gun control failed in the courts, and a recall of Mayor Feinstein failed. San Carlos and Belmont became unusual scenes of violence. San Carlos started off with a murder, while Belmont was making the New Year new with two murder-suicides. Woterdog Lake was a danger spot, several people drowning there. Officials were debating whether or not to close the lake to swimmers or close it entirely. The saddest news came in late August. Ron Alvarado, a county paramedic was killed while performing his duties at an injury auto accident on U.S. 101. And that ' s the way it was . . . 99 Going On Vacation . . . into the mountains . . . However, for the majority who must suffer by not being spoiled, we must slave for an apathetic manager, whose only goal in life is to make you work at a task no sane person would take, especially at the lousy pay! The slight income, experience, and the benefit of get- ting away from o bothersome teenage home life are the thoughts which make it kind of worth the bull. For you, lit- tle Richie Rich ' s, I have little respect! You sit there, keep- ing busy by spending all that money, while we poor struggling laborers must keep busy making the money we want to keep busy with, but which never keeps us busy, becouse it ' s gone before we can keep busy with it! But remember, getting ahead in life isn ' t just accom- plished by going to school! The Final Test It only happens twice o school yeor. The outrageous hours spent to prove your knowledge and pass your class. Aside from the fact that only half days are spent at school, the endless time your eyes are plastered to black and white pages is enough to turn your mind up- side down and all the way around! You give up prime-time television and avoid talking on the phone, just to study the facts. Trying to get an education, you ignore the fact that you may never use the information again, but you faithfully adhere to good study habits. All day is spent in your room studying, studying, studying. About 11 p.m. your eyes start squinting, as letters and numbers become fuzzier and fuzzier. Relentlessly, your mind engulfs the blurry blobs. Finally your head falls, and you drop into an unconscious state. Waking up, you hurriedly get ready for the exam you prepared for. But in class you find you have sud- denly forgotten everything, ond you sit in a state of shock . As your body relaxes, your mind starts cranking and the answers come with moderate difficulty. Finally the test is done, the results only to be known by the teacher who decides your fate. 103 Friday Fridays are full of fun, exciremenr, and thoughts of the weekend. To many, it is payday. What a task to see how for they con stretch their paychecks. Many teachers have the thought of getting away for o quiet weekend. It is a time to regroup and calm the nerves. Many students are under o great deal of pressure by the time Friday rolls around, thinking of tests that could make or break them and trying to plan a fun weekend without getting into too much trouble. Maybe we could go cruising. No. How about the dance? Forget it. I ' m just go- ing to stay home and do homework! If you treat it right, Friday can be the best day of the week. 106 zzzzz . . . There is on insfonr in which the physicol senses dull themselves almost completely, breath comes in long easy droughts, and the eyes roll in toward the mind. The temporary shadows of the outside world penetrate even here. For a time, they collect into a dense black fog upon the stage of unconscious thought. There is a play, soon to unfold. Those plays of the mind most beautiful are almost always forgotten. Such dramas usually fade from memory in our waking hours. Thank God some of us remember. 107 Students coping with teachers . . . This year Mr. Lansberry is going to retire from coaching after 28 years at Carlmont. He has a very good win-loss record as a coach and will sure- ly be missed. Mr. Lansberry was born in Oregon City, Oregon. At the age of fourteen he moved to Alaska, but left later that year because of World War II. He spent some time in the Marine Corps. Mr. Lonsberry attended the University of Alaska and San Jose State and boxed while in college. While in Alaska Mr. Lansberry worked in the forest service, as a fisherman, a brakeman on a train, and in a lumber mill. When asked why he chose coaching he said, Coaching was a second choice for me. I wanted to work in the forest service, but I was weak in math, so I went into coaching. Mr. Lansberry attributes his success as a track and cross country coach to having good athletes, good assistant coaches, and a lot of administrative and faculty support. The qualities that make a good athlete, ac- cording to Mr. Lansberry, are the ability to work hard, loyalty towards other team members, and self-discipline. According to Mr. Lonsberry, to be successful you have to work hard and feel that what you are working for is worth suffering for. When you have pain, you must overcome it to be successful. Pain is something to be tolerated, he says. Mr. Lansberry ' s record speaks for itself. His total record for cross country is 1178 victories and 97 losses. For track the record is 227 vic- tories, 29 losses, and two ties. For girls ' track, the total is 77 victories and only 2 losses. LOREN LANSBERRY. A GUIDING HAND. 123 J.V. Cfoss-Country Front: D. There I was, having a swell time cutting class every two weeks, with o legitimate excuse from the director of student ac- tivities, when this Jennifer Hathrone chick had to go and spoil it all. Who did she think she was, student body vice president or something? Man, I tell ya, I had it set. All I had to do was raise my hand when Mr. Artifact, my Obscure and Insignificant Cultural Details IV AS instructor (lately deceased, God rest his soul) asked for a student council class representative. Doing this at the beginning of each semester, I, from that time on, had a legal excuse to cut Artifact ' s class every two weeks. Instead of actually doing something to benefit Carlmont by taking advantage of my powers as a student council member, I could fake time out of class to swap cripple jokes with my bud- dies in the library. At a really good council meeting, while Hathorne did her best to get something accomplished (what ' s her trip, anyway?), we could bee-ess non-stop for the whole period, without hearing anything she said. All of o sudden, Hathorne gets this compulsion to restructure the council, starting second semester. Suddenly, you ' ve got dozens of killjoys going around campus with petitions, getting signatures to be, get this — nominated to student council! And it ' s not even called student council anymore. Now it ' s called (shudder) Student Senate! There ore other details, but I ' m too teed to care. Thanks, Jen. Thanks to you, I have to find another excuse not to do my homework. 196 Executive Board FRONT ROW: T. Turner, E. Poppas, 5. Klepfer. ROW 2: L. Turner, ROW 3: L. Baba, S. Kume, J. Harhorne, R. Over the year, the group has in- volved itself with activities such as Walkathon III, an Anti-Litter program, Adopr-a-Family, and various dances. The Board proudly purchased a com- puter for the A5B office this year. All records are now computerized for easier access, which will benefit future classes. The Executive Board ' s atten- dance at the Strawberry Leadership Conference and weekly meetings have raised the morale of Carlmont. 197 Finance Board Row 1: M. Holmes, N. O ' Flynn, J. Smerican, T. Throughout the year the members held fundraisers, such as book sales and button sales, to promote reading. The club invited speakers from book stores and publishing com- panies to speak and hoped to culminate its year with a visit by a noted author. 203 Science Club Pioneers of science push bock the frontier of knowledge. The purpose of the Science Club is to go on field trips and explore the natural environ- ment. The club traveled all over the state from the coast to the Sierra Nevada. Between Mr. Goldman ' s penchant for old-fashioned, laborious efficiency, and Max ' s three years of ex- perience in effective, mass production printing short- cuts, it ' s a wonder we got this yearbook out folks. Of course, with Goldman ' s constant chant of We should be done with this thing by late September . . . how could we do anything but succeed? It ' s been a lot of fun working on the Eighty-Four Vistas. Everyone on the staff became very close. Like one big happy family, under father Milton, we leapt into our work, with hardly a moment ' s rest, our hearts overflowing with joy. Every day brought new sur- prises. The work was always easy, and everyone had his or her fair share of if. No one was ever sick or upset, and no one ever told a bad joke, throughout the whole year. All over the world, nuclear arms, and even conven- tional military weapons were either destroyed or rendered inoperable. Everyone was so happy that all the terrorist groups, including the CIA decided to form a Crochet Artists Amalgamation. There was no pover- ty. There was no bad weather. No filth. No wrongdoing. Good luck with the five-thousand dollar debt, Louise. Ha! Ha! P.S. If couldn ' t of been done without Granger Davis! Thanks Grang!
