Mr. Usher was a highly respected Carlmont teacher who suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while coaching the Frosh-Soph football team against Serra, Sep- tember 24, and died early the next morning. After having attended Lincoln High School, he went on to S. F. State College, and earned a BA degree from S. F. State with a major in math and a minor in P. E. He began teaching at Carlmont in September of 1968. Mr. Usher was involved in teaching football, soccer, and track, in addition to teaching in the Math Department. t Mr. Usher gave of his time and talent, not only after school, but also during the summer to help students in conditioning for fall sports. He was a dedicated teacher and friend, and will be missed by all of us at Carlmont. f Debbie Holland i Lynn Masia llfli Co-Editors of VISTAS 78 I SENIORSENIORSENIORSENIORSENIORSENIORSENK 1 8 Seniors ! Long time ago the whites tried to be bad, They beat my ancestors and made them mad. You had to say yes sir and no Ma ' am, If you didn ' t they ' d give you a slap and wouldn ' t give a damn. If you made the bus, they ' d seat you in the back. Somebody tell me why they did us like that. If you want to know, we wanted integration. So Dr. King and others decided to have a conversation. He told the people he wanted us to be together. Whites didn ' t want this, they thought they were better; They made us work in their fields, haul their hay. They only gave us about ten cents a day. They used us, abused us, dogged us and called us names. We had to take it ' cause we were playing their games. It ' s all over — we ' re hipped as can be; We stopped slaving as you can see. We ' ve come up — some of us are doctors, lawyers and teachers too. Step back whites, while we teach to you If you want to know, we ' re cool and calm; We ' ve been Black and Proud ever since we were born. — Bev Thomas (11) POSTER WINNERS: Left to Right: Karen Kramer, Velda Jackson, Cammie Strong, Darryl Smith, Renzi Sadueste, Top: Maurice Chambers.
