January 20, 21, 1977 134 Black History Week BLACKNESS IS . . . By Delphine Baldain Blackness: I look at this word And a million things flash before my eyes Some of which I can ' t describe. Blackness is a thing you just can ' r talk about It ' s something that you must feel, that you must be proud of. Blackness is a thing that comes into existence when a line is drawn. A quality you may not realize you possess Until something in this world brings it out. Blackness isn ' t on ugly thing that ' s full of vulgarity and disrespect Blackness is a greatness that allows us to smile through our dark past And enables us not to blame others for what their forebears did. Blackness isn ' t jumpin ' bad or Dressin ' down and Turnin ' out the town Blackness is takin ' care of business, Gettin ' the gettin ' done. Blackness is more than looking down at the ground Or straining your eyes to see the sky Blackness is an unique whole A concept within itself A thing called SOUL that comes in many forms, A feeling that just can ' t be token away. Blackness is a beautiful thing. (First prize poetry contest) 136 The Bop The Class of 78 held our annual 50 ' s Bop on March 8, at 8:00. The evening was enjoyed by all.
