person must be allowed self- determination if he is to get ahead, the right of self-determination will not be easily granted unless we can show that we stand up for ourselves. b. we never know, how people .... page 102 the mighty scots .... page 140 youths ' guiding lights .... page 170 getting it together .... page 182 class of 1971 dedication we, the class of 1971, formed in September 1967 to become the largest class at Carlmont with 580 students. as freshmen we attended our first hi-day rally with a cheer of we are great, we have fun, we ' re the class of ' 71. paul contos, heidi aspoy, and cathy trimble led our class through a freshmen fun nite, sales days, and bury the dons at homecoming. we said good-bye to one of our original advisors mrs. betty lou hoblar who went to live in hawaii. at the end of our freshman year we participated in the ugly man contest, and went to the first senior car- nival. the following September our class returned as sopho- mores and feeling quite a bit more sure of ourselves, we felt superior to the new freshmen. that year mike gilmore, tony king, and joan penrose guided us as a class. we recall spending hours poking paper mache into our pickle for our homecoming theme pickle the dons and held pizza sales to help build up our treasury. for the Christmas dance we decorated a charlie brown tree and lost. we held a post game dance and had a sophomore fun nite remembering the tacos all over until we vowed never to look at another. we entered a car in the soap box derby and had a booth at the senior carnival. in the fall of 1969 we returned once again to carlmont — this time as juniors and upperclassmen. we started the school year off on flexible scheduling and a new dress code. mike gilmore, lisa gruman, and amy bonnemaison became our new officers. we held a junior fun nite and of course there were tacos for dinner. as we prepared for junior prom we made money from concessions at football games, sales days and post game dances. at homecoming our theme bug the dons made us the most spirited class at carlmont and we went home with the spirit trophy. in spring on april 11 we held our prom scherazade in the school gym. jean cain reigned as princess at the dance. time went on and finally we were seniors and the leaders of our school. don huber, george wightman, and vicky grundmeier headed our class. we went to our last hi-day rally and once again walked off as the most spirited class, we introduced our exchange student ana chaux. that night we welcomed the new freshmen with the traditional sock hop. once again as we prepared for our senior ball we held candid apple and donut sales, a car rally and sold con- cessions at the homecoming game, our theme became seeifrog the dons and ursula christmann reigned as the 1970-71 homecoming queen. we held our senior ball at the sir francis drake hotel in san francisco on april 24. but then the school year came to an end. finals were over and the senior breakfast, picnic and other activi- ties came. our class spent the last week of high school toer before graduation and grad nite. after june 10, 1971 we no longer were a class of students but citizens of the figure sue scott loudest linda stovall and ralph pavone 66 helen sears stops at a check point in the senior car rally. seniors enjoying psychology class outside are gayle nystrom, nancy biggs, leigh ann seitzer, agneta flodihn, sue scott, debbie wsu-d, kelly Jordan and their teacher jane spavins the goodtimes first week frosh orientation started off the week as new students entered carlmont for the first time, welcoming speeches by administra- tion and guided tours were the order of the day. the hi-day-rally on friday of the first week provided an official welcome from dr. craig and mike gilmore (sbp) and an assurance that school spirit had not died at carlmont. class cheering com- petion ended with victory for the class of ' 71. the week ' s activities were concluded with the traditional sock- hop dance to welcome freshmen. welcome dinner food and fun for all were provided for the transfer students at the annual pot-luck transfer dinner, the ac- tivities board sponsored event attempted to make the new scots feel more at home in their new surroundings. mark alien don berry bill laughead laura therkelsen sadie hawkins will you marry me? a young daisy mae proposed, flashing a doe-eyed look at her escort, next to her, a fellow female conspirator was grabbing her choice by his curly locks and dragged him off to the preacher, no sooner had she touched him than mammy yokum sauntered up along side them and placed a firm hand on the girls shoulder, don ' t you think you ' re a bit young? dogpatch came alive with the sounds of warm excursion and marryin ' sam obliged many girls by doing his job. edwina meyer, paul moody turkey trot the 11th annual turkey trot was held between carlmont and san carlos. runners of all sizes, shapes and forms competed for the turkeys waiting for the first girl and boy across the finish line. eilleen o ' malley, 1st place 75 winner phil arnot sue mahoney and jim dadaos homecoming beat the dons! shouted scots as excitement glowed on faces old and new. san carlos was beaten 44 to 22, as our football team once again achieved a homecoming victory. classes competed for the title of most spirited throughout the week ' s activities, the class of ' 72 edged to the top and the juniors were awarded the trophy for most spirited. half time was presented by the spirit squad and the band, the conclusion of half time was the debbie ross bottom ' s head penny ward Christmas week giving is better than getting was the philosophy for the 1970 Christmas canned food drive sponsored by the activities board in cooperation with the san mateo christmas bureau. Christmas trees throughout the school added to the gay spirit of yule-tide season and the week was highlighted by the annual Christmas assembly featuring the stage band, a cappella choir, and a skit presented by the drama dept. 82 83 drama class presentation at christmas assembly. valentines dance valentines day was celebrated a week early, the valentine dance of feb. 5, held after the palo alto basket- ball game, featured the band hot roast beef. rallies bob trask wilderness trip to experience the beauty of this earth and a oneness with nature were two of the many goals of the wilderness trip. 99 juniors accepted the challenge and departed for the wilderness four day trek, once there, the large group was dissolved. 10 smaller groups were formed and in the dark of the night departed, the individual group treks ranged from 10 to 50 miles. 89 activity days to enhance the action of campus life, we added variety, a one-hour activity period brightened up every few weeks, all over
