The mystical madness The dawning of the age of Aquarius awakens a new interest in the occult arts. Carlmont students use these mysteries from astrology to xylomancy to guide themselves through the long dark night of flexible scheduling. For example, those unusual smelling experiments in chemistry might be an attempt to gain a fortune by turning magnesium wire to gold through the magic of alchemy. Adept at cheating students find telephthy and ESP useful during finals. of Carlmont high The study of phrenology, the meaning of bumps on the head, is a good excuse for girls to run their fingers through a boy friend ' s hair, testing his greasy kid stuff. Astrology and palmistry are the two most common forms of fortune-telling in use at Carlmont; thus, conflicting or compatible signs can begin or end a romance. Finally, studying an athlete ' s hand helps the coach decide which players to use. V When a graduate leaves the protection of high school, he steps into a world of insanity. He faces miles of freeway maniacs. The air he breathes is full of smoke and fumes. His food is contaminated with cyclamate and DDT. Rocks from outer space, food cooked in ten seconds, and hearts being switched from one body to another are common. States are sinking into the ocean, invaders landing in UFO ' s, and monsters thriving in lakes. Ten-foot washing machines, white tornadoes, noisy potato chips, and talking enzymes confront the grad. Thus, it pays to learn your witchcraft skills now, for they will be useful in competition against professionals. 6 Astrology is the art of analyzing personal traits and determining the future by observing the stars. In our space age society, it is surpris- ing that people rely on the stars to direct their lives. Some students blame cinch notices on the fact that their teacher was born under an opposite sign. Teachers need to exercise care to plan a test for a favorable day. Many seniors will consult their horoscopes to choose a college. Do the stars know the difference between Harvard and Harvey Mudd? Seniors The Class of ' 70 Junior high was finally behind us and in September of 1966 the Class of ' 70 descended upon Carlmont to an exciting new world. Remember the first time your locker wouldn ' t open and then you discovered you were at the wrong locker? How about when you were directed to the opposite end of the school instead of to your class? And to top that off you walked onto senior lawn by mistake and got dumped head-first in a trashcan. Those are times we like to pretend never existed. The sophomores were sarcastic, juniors overbearing, but the seniors were helpful. They guided us through the first few weeks until the shadows of classes, home- work, teachers, and students started to take shape in our inexeperienced minds. Our freshman year started off with the traditional Hi-day rally. Our class surprised the school by spread- ing throughout the Glen as the biggest class in school history. The first week of school was climaxed by the Sock Hop, thrilling us all because it l asted past nine o ' clock! We started off our treasury with the $25 prize for the best Christmas tree at the Christmas dance. It was decorated traditionally with toys beneath the evergreen. Our donut sales and fun night profits help- ed to build the treasury. We were led through that ex- citing year by Dori Slater, Celia Mosher, and Judy Eggleson. Summer sped by and the school year began all too soon. We returned as confident sophomores, laughing at the small scared freshmen. Summer saw many changes in the Carlmont we knew. Schedules were changed to a two-track system where freshmen re- ' ' mained later than everyone else. Our cafeteria disap- peared, replaced by vending machines and processed food. We elected Gary Dei Rossi, Bob Chang, and Carol Pex to lead us in that profitable year of pizza and do- nut sales. We hoped to start a new tradition of a spring elections dance and winning the soap box derby. We doubled our treasury and started plans for junior prom. We spent our junior year selling donuts and Cracker Jacks, sponsoring Charley ' s Aunt, and lolling on Lone Oak lawn. Schedules had been changed again and more vending machines added to fill student stom- achs. Our junior prom was held in the romantic gym to an Hawaiian theme, Kahalua. Sandi Fleisher was crowned princess. Jan Futrell, Dan Sullivan, and Mari- anna Belli were class officers. Once again we tri- umphed at the soap box derby. Our senior year started off with a bang! Flexible scheduling was here to replace last year ' s program. Loan Oak lawn was buried beneath the new portable buildings, and a new field was built above T-wing. But the distinction of senior lawn was ours at last and we proudly welcomed the freshmen with the Sock Hop. Preparing for senior ball, we sold donuts and Cracker Jacks again and held a post-game dance. The year was filled with sports events, a car rally, college applica- tions, and senior pranks. Senior ball was held at the Peninsula Golf and Country club and seniors broke tradition by omitting the Bay cruise. Winding up the year were the senior week activities and then gradua- tion. Our four years are over. It is all behind us new and we have a new history to make. Aries March 21- April 19 The Ram is always searching for tomorrow, explaining why he skips class today. Some of these bumps are the eyes, nose, and ears, which have no meaning whatsoever. But the mental faculty of the faculty is shown by the high, well-developed fore- heads bearing the stamp of intellectuality. Be sure, however, to distinguish a teacher ' s wrinkles or experience from bumps of intelligence. Faculty aii ' dministration 69 Administration Where was Mr. Griffin all year? We have looked into the problem and found Mr. Griffin holed up in his office. Surrounded by the walls of his office, he does what any busy administrator would do. He studies solutions to the problems of flexible scheduling, writes speeches, and conducts conferences with unhappy parents, to mention a few of his duties. In April of this year, Mr. Griffin announced his resignation as principal. We have all appreciate his achievements and hope he will have many productive years as a counselor. Ivan Griffin Principal Fred Mangini Dean of Boys The rest of the administration has spent the year coping with all the problems of flexible scheduling that no one had thought of before. The deans have had so many problems with naughty students that they hired two campus aides to babysit the children we have here at Carlmont. Mr. Berry has been trying to handle complaints from student officials who are having trouble scheduling meetings and activities. Mr. Ferry ' s shoulder has become a crying towel for the overwrought counsellors. Mr. DeNardo has been asking for money all year to buy more files for the cut notices he has issued. Fran Ferry Registrar Bernice Stewart Dean of Girls Donald Berry Norm DeNardo Assistant Vice Principal Safety Education Assistant Vice Principal Counseling The counselors have really earned their money this year, taking on the monumental job of flexible scheduling. If the dedicated people in the counseling office were speculators they would have invested in an aspirin company and made their fortune; instead, they chose to help us through this year and on to bigger things in the future. Not only did they have to cambat 50 students waiting outside their doors, but they had to give up their well-chewed bubble gum and mix up magic potions to repair the overworked computer. ...RULE OF THUMB FOR COLLEGE-BOUND STUDENTS... The really accomplished sorcerer can enliven a dull lecture by turning himself into a frog. Activities 105 HI DAY- LEY. Hi-day rally GARY WELCOMES ZORAN. At Carlmont ' s Hi-Day rally, the Scots were once again officially welcomed back to school. The annual rally included such traditional activities as a raffle for old albums, a contest for the spirit megaphone, and introduction of school officers, spirit squad, new teachers, and Zoran Todordvic, our AFS exchange student from Yugoslavia. Homecoming Spirit was high during Scots ' homecoming, November 3-7, as the classes competed for the title of most spirited. Duringthe week points were gained by showing outstanding spirit on banner day, color day, slave day, and rally day. Homecoming week officially began Monday morning. Monday was banner day and the walls of the school were covered with posters. The posters exhibited what the football team was going to do to San Carlos at the homecoming game. On Tuesday, an election was held for Big Man on Campus. All the contestants were members of the football team. MY FELLOW AMERICANS. CARLMONT MASCOT. More class spirit was displayed on Wednesday, color day. Each class wore a different color to show its spirit and distinguish itself from the others. Thursday was slave day. A member of any fall sport team could make a girl his slave and give her his jersey to show she was in servitude. Then a spirited homecomoing rally was held in the gym Friday afternoon. A skit was presented, the coaches made speeches and the spirit squad led spectators in yells. The trophy for most spirited was awarded to the juniors. That night a car parade rode down to Terremere field and spectators gathered to watch a double homecoming between Carlmont and San Carlos. At halftime floats were displayed and Chris Cooper crowned D ianne Talbert as homecoming queen. Carlmont triumphed 28-6 over San Carlos. LOOK AT THAT!! BEAR HUG? THREE ' S A CROWD. THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC. Christmas assembly Owing to the problem of setting up a schedule, the first assembly of the year was the Christmas assembly. That morning the freshmen and juniors gathered in the gym to see the assembly whilethe sophomores and seniors waited in their admin classes for an hour; then the groups switched places. The assembly also turned into a talent show, as many student groups performed. The stage band played several numbers and the choir sang Christmas songs, both traditional and new. The drama students put on a skit, some students danced, and Nancy McNeil sang. Most of the students liked the assembly and hoped there would be more during the school year in addition to the entertainment during lunch. PLUNK, PLUNK. OH, MY BACK! RIGHT ON. Christmas dance December 19 was the date and 8 p.m. was the time. The place was the gym and the theme was Mexican. If you haven ' t guessed yet, we are talking about the Christmas dance. The gym was decorated in bright colors with pitiatas and a giant sombrero hanging from the ceiling, rather than the traditional red and green of an American Christmas. The Southern Fried provided the music. The annual Chirstmas tree competition was ruled by the almighty senior class winning $25 for the most clever tree. There was also a competition for Santa Claus. Bob Chang, Cameron Jeong, John Spaulding, Dave Napoletano and Scott Hopgood competed for the honor. Junior Scott Hopgood was elected and presided over the dance. IF THE HAT FITS, WEAR IT. CHRISTMAS SPIRIT. FOR ME? QUACK. WHERE ' S THE BATHROOM? CHRISTMAS POINSETTIA. Alumni basketball game The Boys ' Sports board sponsored the first annual alumni basketball game. The purpose was to bring back several of Carlmont ' s all-time greats to oppose the faculty. It was a crowded game, with a dance following. Some of the participants were faculty members Arney Lundquist and coach Terry Stogner and former Scots Tom McBride and John Hammer. TILTING TOWER. REACH OUT. It was one of the best-attended events of the year, with spectators filling the gym to overflowing. Proceeds went to the Peace corps. Senior Cindi Boardman took charge of the activity. Dee-jay Chris Edwards was one of the KYA players and some of the Scot rebounders were Mel Johnson, Dave Merta, Bruce Usher, and Bob Trask. The biggest surprise of the entire evening was not Mr. Trask ' s hairy legs, the large attendance, or the good show. The surprise of the evening was Carlmont ' s victory! I THINK I ' LL SWITCH TO TV. ST-R-E-T-CH. YOU CANT HIT SOMEONE WITH GLASSES Superstition fun The superstitious sophomores held their fun night in the dead of night on the spookiest night of the year, Friday, March 13. It was appropriately titled Superstition with decorations to match the theme. Sophomore president Debbie Hales took charge of the affair which netted over one hundred dollars profit. Horrifying hamburgers for dinner, devilish dancingto the music of Heaven ' s Rage, scary swimming in the pool, and gruesome games of vollyball and badminton in the ghoulish gym filled the evening with frightening fun. HEY, YOU GUYS, I ' M OVER HERE. HORSES ARE GUARANTEED FRESH. SHE ' S DISAPPEARED AGAIN! Car rally The senior class and Belmont Rotary club jointly sponsored a community car rally. Each participant received a plaque and over eighty cars joined in the fun. Ten drivers were awarded trophies for the highest number of points. Points were awarded to drivers who drove safely, answered various questions correctly, and checked in at the five check points between start and finish. The event began at Carlmont and finished at Pizza Plus, where trophies were presented. Senior Jack Brown finished first. DOWN THE ROAD ON THE LEFT. WHICH WAY TO SAN CARLOS? Carlmonitor staff The beginning and advanced journalism classes worked throughout the year to produce the Carlmonitor. Their publication was frequently under fire from the administration, faculty and student body. Among their activities this past year were frequent trips to the printer of the Carlmonitor, a visit to the San Mateo Times, a vigorous campaign against closed campus, and an excess of headaches. Laurie Wiesenfeld acted as editor-in-chief, Darryl Samuelson and Fran Vella as associate editors, Steve Brown, Brian Russel, and Will Wiley took care of photography, and Jeanne Etcheverry and Harry Elkins managed the advertising. Student leaders often have dis- tinctive hands. The bottom of the thumb, the IVIount of Mars, and little finger. Mount of Mercury, are well developed, although the rest of the body may not be. By studying the palm, one can recognize certain personality traits at a glance. Some teachers use this method to determine a student ' s final grade. And a cold, clammy hand could mean the difference between a wallflower or homecoming queen. nd Bo Executive board Under the guidance of adviser Don Berry, the Carlmont Executive board once again survived the school year. As an innovation, the sopho- more and freshman class presidents were recognized by the dignitaries and appointed to the Executive board. Engineering When all the brains of the school get together and decline to comment regardingtheir activities, something is suspect. They are either planning drastic measures against the freshmen or conducting a private orgy. Future engineers of America follow the line of success on their palms and join the Engineering club. Faculty and students alike engage in this fun-filled pastime. The avid skier often consults a fortuneteller to predict ski conditions. One is an aggressive force, shown by our football players with their girl friends. Two is the art of balance, needed by gymnasts to keep from breaking their necks. Four stands for constancy, an outstanding virtue of our cross country team as they battle fog, smog, and bog. Eight represents success for basketball players winning scholarships in spite of their grades, and Nine is the game of power, tiddly-winks, where Carlmont is champ.
