Senior History We were introduced to high school during a spirit- ed year. The Scot football team smashed Sequoia ' s win streak at the Homecoming game. Under the leadership of president Erica Wagner, vice-president Merry Oviatt, and secretary-treasurer Kitty Jones, we held our freshman fun night on March 8, which was a big success. Our sophomore year began with Diane Maxon, Nancy Kilday, and Kitty Jones as class officers. Our fun night, scheduled for November 22, was cancelled because of the death of President Kennedy. Also dur- ing our sophomore year, the new Little Theater was built. The highlight of our junior year was Al Di La, the junior prom. Jane Griffith was crowned princess. Under the leadership of president Hans Bankers, vice-president Robb Gruman, and secretary Gerry McBride, we sponsored L ' il Abner, the spring play. Finally, we were seniors. Led by Frank Pignataro, Bill Futrell, and Suzette Johnston, we welcomed the freshmen at the traditional Sox Hop. The senior fun night, an all-school carnival, was a big success. We held our senior ball, Cast Your Fate To The Wind, at the San Mateo Elks club. June 15-17 was senior week; then graduation brought the end to our four years at Carlmont. Scots Begin a New On the first day of the ' 65- ' 66 school year, the halls, silent for two weeks since the dismissal of summer school, echoed with the familiar sounds of Carlmont. Lockers slammed, and bright new note- books appeared on the Scot campus, along with the screams of old friends meeting again. Freshmen, unaccustomed to their new environment, huddled together for pro- tection. As the day progressed, students yelled their new class schedules to friends, and crowded the corridors, making traffic im- possible. At the end of the day, grumbles could already be heard, as students started home with a load of books and fresh assign- ments. Then the halls were silent once more. LET GIRLS OFF THE BUS FIRST? EXCHANGE STUDENT JAN GERBRANDS. WHAT, DETENTION ALREADY? Seniors Welcome the Class of ' 69 The Sock Hop held in the gym and sponsored by the senior class was the first dance at Carlmont this year. Its pur- pose was to welcome the freshmen. The Associates provided the music. Many stu- dents contributed to the atmosphere by decorating their socks in crazy ways. WHO INVITED YOU HERE? MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DO. WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT? 102 Fall Rally Promotes Spirit As the Carlmont band played the Scots ' Fight Song, students plowed into the gym for the an- nual fall sports rally. But instead of the usual break-up into classes for competition, the males piled to one side of the gym, while a multitude of girls arranged themselves neatly on the other. After the coaches for football, cross-country, and water polo introduced themselves and their teams. Spirit commissioner Kitty Jones announced the vocal battle between the sexes. It was never really decided whether the piercing screeches of the girls outdid the boys ' bellowing. Both teams were led by cheerleading men and women faculty members. CARLMONT ' S SUBTLE APPROACH. WAIL ON HIM! Mad Week of Events Marks Homecoming An exciting week of events was started when girls chosen by members of the varsity football team were put into bondage. Wearing football jerseys, the girls had to carry boys ' books, lunch trays, messages, and other bur- dens. It as Slave day! Following a tense day of voting, Nancy Beattie was crowned queen at the Homecoming dance, Roses and Rainbows, Wednesday night. Friday, in an all-school rally, the junior class was de- clared winner of Blue and Gray day and also winner of the megaphone. Starting from Carlmont before Friday ' s game, a lineup of decorated cars wound toward Sequoia with a police escort. The winning cars were driven by Debbie Barr and Liz Jacobs. Assembled in the bleachers to cheer the team were Carlmont alumni, faculty, parents and students. During half-time, the Scots were entertained by two bagpipers dressed in traditional Highland costume. In a thrilling game, Carlmont lost to Sequoia 20-19. ' I FEEL PRETTY. Running through brush and brambles, on guard for snakes, up high hills, down steep slopes, the brave contestants panted to the finish at San Carlos high school. Tur- keys were awarded to winners in nine categories. The Christmas assembly, also held in the gym, featured the a cappel choir along with three soloists for a presentation of German Christmas music. Carlmont ' s stage band also added to the festive atmosphere. Swirls of snowflakes decorated the gym for the annual Commissioners ' Christmas dance. Couples danced to the music of the Doug Poehler Quintet at the Winter Fantasy. KU KLUX KLAN?? Christmas Comes to Carlmont Vistas B eats April Deadline Typewriters clicked in D-11 as the year- book staff worked to meet their April deadhne. The Vistas staff scheduled, took, and pasted up pictures, wrote copy and cap- tions, and drew the cartoons in the year- book. They also sold yearbooks three times a week during lunch periods until Christ- mas. After that Mrs. Shinn handled sales in the office. The class sold ads to Belmont and San Carlos stores to help finance the yearbook, which was compiled under the leadership of editor Val Coie, assistant editors Nancy Bull and Liz Jacobs, and adviser Milton Goldman. 1151 Xarfmofiffor Provides Wide Coverage The Carlmonitor staflF published thir- teen issues, under the supervision of edi- tor-in-chief Bonnie Kinsler, feature editor Judie Jackson, sports editor Greg Moon, news editor Marcie Smith, and picture editor Jeanne Bennett. The big scoops of the year included coverage of the Model United Nations, adjusting to the new constitution, the battle of the bands, and the two Carl- monitor pet projects: the Politeness Day Sweepstakes, in which the stafiF rewarded courteous students, and a successful clothing drive for VISTA (war on pov- erty) in West Virginia. The hardworking staff also managed to publish a giant Christmas issue. The feature page covered everything from exchange students, to Vietnam to granny dresses, and included regularly scheduled features like the mailbox, edi- torials and Judie Jackson ' s cartoons and column. Grad Night A cable car driv en by an Arabian sheik! This was how the graduates were greeted upon arriving to their last party of the year as the class of ' 66. It was Grad Night. Upon presenting themseh es at the door, gradu- ates were whisked down the hall by parents garbed in costumes similar to those worn by Law- rence of Arabia. A smiling genie inside the gym gave the boys fezzes while girls were presented with bracelets. Exclamations of awe and surprise could be heard by thrilled seniors as they took their first glimpses of the gym, miraculously transformed to repre- sent an Arabian paradise. A huge paper mache camel, a rotating genie on a flying carpet, and beautiful murals with familiar Arabian scenes were a few of the many exciting decorations in the gym. Exuberant dancers foimd ample music provided by William Penn and his Pals, and Johnny Vaughn ' s orchestra and rock and roll band. Girls were amazed to find the dance studio, where they had spent seemingly endless hours ex- ercising, embellished with bright streamers, car- THIS BEATS FLYING SAUCERS. peted floors, and tables cov ered with cloths of shocking colors. Efficient, Arabian-clothed bar- tenders provided Cokes and Sprites for all thirsty grads, and a wide array of other foods were served during the evening. The unrecognizable dance studio gave dancers a place to rest, hungry grads a chance to eat, a place to talk, and an observation point from which to watch dancers. An Arabian market place was recreated in the exercise room where games, handwriting analysis, and portrait drawing were some of the activities. Wandering photographers gladly took pictures of all activities for only a few drachmas. ' All graduates agreed that this PTA sponsored event was a spectacular way to end their four years at Carlmont.
