Math New things happened this year in the Carlmont math department with the intro- duction to the Yale Plan. The Yale Plan was named and started hy a group of students at Yale university who devised a method for teaching higher math to high school students. Carlmont is one of the few high schools trying this plan out. The teachers from the different high schools met at Stanford uni- versity throughout the year to iron out prob- lems. If the plan continues to he successful, it will he a permanent part of the Carlmont math department as a four-year plan. ■TRY AND PROVE IT '

Music There is more to teaching music than one usually realizes. When one hears the music groups, he can never imagine all of the off ' key singing or playing that took place in the classroom. Teachers try to teach more than just sing- ing or playing of an instrument. They try to convey the skills that are necessary for superior standards of performance, and they try to instill an appreciation of good music. This year there were three music teachers : Jerry Einarsson, Russell Reed, and Dan Border, a newcomer to the department. WHERE ARE MY BASSES? Sculpture in wire and wood are annual projects of each shop. A basic knowledge of the workings of the machines and tools is given to the boys along with a funda ' mental knowledge of design so that students will use their own imagination on their individual projects.

p. E. Dept. CLEANLINESS IS OUR POLICY! MISS ARLENE L. COUGOULE LOREN LANSBERRY Boys ' and girls ' P.E. departments have been stressing fitness with fun the past year. Despite overcrowded conditions, both departments offered varied programs. Boys were rated according to athletic ability in classes of whites, reds, and blues. The pro- gram includes 14 sports, although each class does not receive all 14. Added to the established girls ' P.E. program were year-long classes of advanced and inter- mediate dance and advanced swimming. AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS? 18
