This year a Senior Class has come into being. These students were the pioneersof our government, activities, and sports. It is, therefore, fitting that we dedicate this book to those persons who have served their school so well. It is with these words, that we, the VISTAS staff, do hereby dedicate this yearbook to the first graduates of Carlmont: the Class of ' 55, with the hope that they may be- come responsible citizens of city, state, nation, and world. FOREWORD The VISTAS is your view of the past year. Your days as a highlander live again as you thumb through this book. Activities, dances, games, and your senior portrait are a pictorial record of one of the greatest years in your life. By means of the VISTAS, your friends, your tea- chers, the Scot spirit wi 1 1 come back to you Keep this book and cherish it in years to come-it is your record of a wonderful year. .mm; mix bm wjrac ADMINISTRAT ACTIVITI SPORTS Is - |S JS bSSS? • • - « «n There is an old saying that A job well begun is already half done . In the three years that Carlmont High School has been in existence, an enviable beginning has been made by the students and faculty in building the reputation of Carlmont as an outstanding high school . Those who become Carlmont Highlanders in years to come will have had high standards set for them to live up to by you who have the honor of being Carlmont ' s first graduating class. The story of Carlmont is being written every day by the actions of every student and teacher in the school. While the story is just beginning, it gives every promise of being a brilliant story of great accom- plishments. The Class of 1955 always be remembered for the part it has played in shaping the character of Carlmont. To the Class of 1955, those of us who remain behind say, thank you and extend our best wishes for your future success and accom- plishment. Superintendent ci Z a . cZ - We are now full grown and are graduating our first senior class from Carlmont High School. As these seniors take their rightful places in com- munities throughout the world, Carlmont will begin to help shape things that are to come. As you look through these pages in years to come, you will realize how fitting is the name Vistas for Carlmont ' s annual. You will also realize in looking back over the seasons the joys that were yours when you were in our midst. To you, our first graduating class, we, in a sense, dedicate this yearbook, knowing full well that you can be trusted with this dedication be - cause of the marvelous work you have done for Carlmont. Indeed, there would have been no Carlmonthad it not been for the present seniors and their efforts in formulating student government and in creating a spirit that is indomitable yet kindly and considerate. Thank you, Class o f 1955 °f Carlmont High School, and may the classes that come after you long emulate you. Principal Best wishes and good fortune to the members of the graduating Senior Class. In the past three years, you have grown in stature, judgment, experience, and competence to deal with increasingly complex problems. You have shared in the growth and tradition that is Carlmont, and we shall remember you for the outstanding contributions you have made to our school. It is an earnest hope that Carlmont has contributed to your growth and understanding. , £l £L$ 4-J Dean of Girls May I wish the best for those sturdy Highlander pioneers of the class of ' 551 Your role has been noteworthy in many respects; you are the first graduating class of our beautiful Carlmont. Future generations will certainly look with pride at the splendid accom- plishments you have made. During the past three years you have contributed much to the solid foundation that shall support Carlmont in the many years to come. As you go forward in your adult en- deavors, wear with pride the distinctions that you so justly deserve. Please accept from me many thanks and best wishes for the future. £L- m« Dean of Boys Vice Principal Much has been said about the importance of getting off to a good start in the world of work. Employment trends indicate that for the most part the graduating Carlmonter will experience no difficulty in finding suitable job openings for the next several years. Achieving success in the world of work, however, demands far more than simply finding a good job. Employers by the scores have rated HONESTY and DEPENDABILITY above all else -- even above grades or amount of education. Meetings were held every two weeks. Whenever an important problem was brought up, the legislature discussed it and came to a decision. This body appropriated money for the various clubs and organizations throughout the school. The Legislature acted as a melt- ing pot for all the ideas that poured into it from the student body . WELFARE Under the leadership of Commissioner Martin McGurrin, the Welfare Board has done an excellent job of enforcing the many student body laws. Board members were a familiar sight at games and in the halls. Their work in bringing offenders before the Tri- bunal may have been resented but was a very necessary job. The offenders could have attorneys and witnesses to plead their cases. The power to invalidate acts passed by the student legislature and board of Commissioners by finding them unconstitutional is given to the Tribunal. Chief Tribune, Harley Smith, presides over court sessions. This is an example of democracy in actionl 18 FINANCE The Finance Board has had the responsibility of handling all student body monies. Under the leadership of Tom Cole, Editor-in-chief and Mr. West, advisor, fifteen issues were published for the year 1954-1955. This year ' s paper continued the size increase incorporated last year. This made the paper five columns instead of the former four columns. The circulation was also boosted about 600 copies, from 800 to 1400. The Carlmonitor is supported by the student body cards and paid advertisers. As in previous years the printing was done by the San Carlos Enquirer. It was a combination of enthusiasm, skill, and hours of work. After its organization, the book proceeded on its way. Everybody got involved: editors, sports writers, artists, photographers, typists, and people who just seemed to be there at the right time. Finally the Vistas staff sent the book to the publishers-quarterby quarter-until it was completed. In the meantine the business staff and the sales manager took over and sold the book and issued it to you. The secret meeting place, better known as the multi-purpose room, was trans- formed into acafe by the Junior class for one of the year ' s biggest events. The Highland artist colony supplied replicasof French paintings and placed them throughout the cafe. The accent was on the atmosphere. This was carried out by small tables with checker board tablecloths and apache dancers in the dimly lit corners. With the aid of Mr. Bauer, Enid Cheavens and Adriane Goodwin are painting French scenes to add to the atmosphere of the Prom . The Scots, though often on the dismal end of the scoreboard, found hope for the future in good play from a predominantly junior-manned starting crew. Untimely injuries delayed the team ' s development but gave game experience to several players who will be key men next year. Co -capt ains Eldon Focht, fullback, closed a brilliant high school career which saw him captain frosh -soph, junior varsity, and varsity squads in his three years. Austin Par lette, BobRosager, Jerry Allen, and Co -captain Jack Turturici also starred. WASHINGTON 1 3. CARLMONT 6 The Scots opened the season with Washington of Centerville before an enthusiastic rooting section which made the long trek to watch the first varsity tilt in school history. The Carlmonters drew first blood on a Parletce -Rosager aerial but succumbed in a tough battle. Parlette rolled to impressive statistics through the air lanes, but the passing attack was dulled in later games as four ends went out via the injury route. ■BURLINGAME 31, CARLMONT The Highlanders faced the four toughest teams in the league before arriving battered and injury riddled to face nearly win- less South San Francisco. In the league opener, Burlingame ' s hard -running backs ripped the Scot defenses. A stronger second half, good performances by Parlette and Focht, and better line play were highlights of the Scot ' s day. Rosager ' s pass catching drew raves from north peninsula prep scribes. MENLO-ATHERTON 39, CARLMONT 13 The Scots opened without the services of ace end Bob Farina but were in high spirits for the tilt with their intra -district rivals. The Bears, who later proved to be title contenders, dampened the Scot spirits by returning the opening kick-off for a touchdown. They opened a 33-0 half-time lead over the stunned High- landers. But Ferem ' s charges came back in typical never -say -die style to win the second half 13-6. Parlette assumed the league passing leadership, and Rosager moved nearjhe front in recieving. SAN MATEO 45, CARLMONT In their most disappointing effort of the season, the Scots dropped another to a bigger San Mateo eleven, but again fought until the final gun. They played a better second half once again but found little consolation in the whole show. It was back to fundamentals for the be leagured Scots who still had to face tough Paly in their suicide slate. Tough pass de - fense and an injury riddled receiving corps dropped Parlette to third in the passing department. PALO ALTO 34, CARLMONT 7 In the first home varsity football game in the history of the school the Scots fell to high- flying Palo Alto, a team which stayed in title contention all year. The injury-riddled Scots scored on a 66 yard drive engineered by senior Quarterback Ron Caruso and again showed flash- es of promise while taking a licking from a deeper, more experienced foe. WILLOW GLEN 20, CARLMONT In a colorful Veterans ' Day contest before a rain-soaked crowd in San Jose State ' s Spartan Stadium, the fighting Scots held the highly regarded Rams fresh from an upset win over de- fending champion Lincoln to a 0-0 half time tie. The Scots, playing good ball all the way fell victim to three breakaway efforts in the second half but kept the Rams from putting together any sustained drives. The spirited, though wet, Scot rooters out numbered those of host Willow Glen in an excellent show of school spirit. CAPUCHINO 18, CARLMONT 13 The doughty Scots came within one yard of the greatest upset of the season in the final minute of an exciting game which saw the Car- lmonters play toe-to-toe with title contending Capuchino. Tied 6-6 at the half, Capuchino pulled away 18-6 in the third period and app- eared to be on their way when the Scots struck back with a fine mixture of running and pass- ing plays for a second score and then moved the Mustangs ' finest back deep into their own territory before a heart-breaking interception sent victory hopes out the window. The Thank- sgiving game, played before 1500 fans, clim- axed a tough but, in many ways, great season for the Highlanders. SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO 20, CARLMONT 6 Carlmont continued to play improved ball week by week as they neared the end of their baptism under the fire of varsity play. Eldon Focht continued to batter a steady tatoo o n opposition linemen with his hard running and Ron Caruso filled in for injured Austin Parlette for the second week. Depth and experience gave the Warriors their second straight win. A t s £- rr ■I JEFFERSON 20, CARLMONT O Sandwiched in between two of their best showings of the season was a dis- appointing shut-out by winless Jeffer- son. The Scots won the battle for the cellar of the PAL with the loss as the succumbed to the hard-running Jeffs. They came back fighting in the season finale, however, to mark this year ' s beleaugured squad as one of the finest. Adherence to training rules is a duty of each squad member. Questionable practices and borderline ethics are not profitable. He who abides by the rules of the school deserves homage and respect. The greatest satisfaction comes from giving one ' s best through a season of prepar- ation and during a game. The highest type of enjoyment comes from working in a worthy cause. Contests should engender good will between the school sand it is the duty of each player to promote this feeling. The proper question for an athlete to ask is What can I do for the School? in- stead of What will the school give me if I win? The success of an athletic department, school, or nation depends on adherence to laws. The friends made among the faculty, student body, teammates, and opposing players are the most valuable assets one can gain. As wide-eyed Freshmen we wandered the vast halls of Sequoia and rooted for the Cherokees. In our Sophomore year we went back to Sequoia again but not as Sequoians. We were Carlmonters — attending a high-school within a high-school — studentswithouta school of our own. We were crowded and jammed in our classrooms, lockers, and halls, but we re- mained united as CarlmontHigh School — as Highlanders. Then one day in April the home- owners along San Carlos Avenue were startled to see a train of school busses crowded with shouting, singing students. No wonder we were happy — at last we had a school of our own! It had hurt when we left Sequoia, but once on the way we never looked back — onlyforward — to Carlmont. Once at the school, seemingly hundreds of minor problems arose — we became hope- lessly lost in the new halls, we forgot our new locker combinations, we couldn ' t remember the new bus schedules. There were major problems too, the most pressing of which was setting up our student government. While we were at Sequoia, we hadwrittena Constitution and elected officers, but we had never hada real chance to govern ourselves. As Sequoia ' s guests, we went under Sequoia ' s rules. Then all at once we were on our own — sink or swim — we swam! We were just getting used to our new school when June came and we left. But when we started our Junior year in September, we realized for the first time all that we had to do. Our student government started functioning and we revised our Constitution. More clubs were organized and the Highlanders ' activities increased. The athletic teams started getting into shape on their own fieldsand the girls ' sports system was setup and later enlarged. Then of course, Carlmont was a school without customs and traditions. Unconsciously we were forming them — just by our everyday actions. Now as we leave Carlmont we can look back on a successful Senior year. One of our biggest problems at the beginning of the year was uniting our class — but as the year pro- gressed, our class spirit increased. Byour working and playing together we drew into a com- pact group and we set Senior traditions at the same time. We look forward to the future with the memory of past success have enjoyedour years here at Carlmont, but as young men and wo- men, we look ahead with confidence and eagerness, secure in the knowledge that in the past years we have laid the cornerstone for 215 successful and useful lives. As boys and girls we SENIOR BOARD SENIOR BOARD-STANDING (L. to R.): Dana Levy, Tom Cole, Harry MacDonaugh, Pat Proctor, Joanne Carvell. SEATED: Madge Raymond, Mr. Cutler. A time capsule containing the signatures of all seniors was placed in a steel cash box, wrapped in aluminum foil, and planted under the tree to be dug up and opened at our twenty-fifth class reunion. On Saturday, July 19, 19 80 your reunion committee, assisted by spouces and children, located the tree stump, unearthed the plaque, and finally located and brought up from it ' s watery tomb the time capsule. Due to the condition of the box and the stench of the water pouring from the sealed container, the committee opened it on the spot. Inside was a tightly wrapped roll of butcher paper with a binder paper listing of our signatures glued to it .. .unprotected and congealed into a mass of jelly-like substance. Attempts to dry and unroll the scroll were unsuccessful. Only a brief peak at the interior layers was obtained as it dried. The scroll (sealed in plastic), box, and plaque were displayed at the reunion. SO LONG CLASS OF T 55 TO THE CLASS OF JUNE, 1955 This supplement was printed in order that you might relive at least a small portion of your experiences during your last year at Carlmont. In 1955, you were a pioneer class, a class that had gathered its scattered elements into a United Body. True, your early days were difficult ones -- call it a period of adjustment or just plain growing pains . However, by November you began to realize that the entire student body was looking to you for that traditional Senior Leadership. Could you meet that challenge ? We think you did. You took up the slack reins of leadership in your hands and produced a fabu- lous Senior Ball at the Elks Club in San Mateo on April 22. Please Remember that night. True, this was only a class activity. Could you now prove your leadership by having Carlmont follow you? May 13, 1955 was to be your Key Date. By this time you had decided against a Cut Day. Instead, you presented a demonstration of spirit such as had never been seen before at Carlmont. That ' s right, Campus Day was all yours. Not only did you earn the plaudits of your faculty and administration; but, you also gained the respect of the entire student body. Yes, you were now CARLMONT ' s Senior Class. There were a number of activities that followed such as: That Senior Breakfast at Chimney Corners. Remember that stack of orange juice cans ? That cold, foggy Monday picnic at Adobe Creek Lodge. That Great barbecued chicken under the oaks after graduation rehearsal. You stood in line for hours -- who can forget. And then graduation So Long Class of ' 55 You gave us great words to live by and great deeds to live up to. You helped to build Carlmont. You will always be remembered, for although you were out of this world on your evening on Campus , you will always be CARLMONT ' s first and finest. RECESSIONAL POSTLUDE O GOD, OUR HELP IN AGES PAST LORD AND SAVIOUR, TRUE AND KIND O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home! Lord and Saviour, true and kind, Be the master of my mind; Bless, and guide and strengthen still All my powers of thought and will. Under the shadow of Thy throne, Still may we dwell secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defense is sure. While I ply the scholar ' s task, Jesus Christ, be near, I ask; Help the memory, clear the brain, Knowledge still to seek and gain. Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same. Here I train for life ' s swift race; Let me do it in Thy grace: Here I arm me for life ' s fight; Let me do it in Thy might. A thousand ages in Thy sight, Thou hast made me mind and soul; Are like an evening gone; I for Thee would use the whole: Short as the watch that ends the night, Thou hast died that I might live; Before the rising sun. All my powers to Thee I give. O God, our help in ages past, Striving, thinking, learning still, Our hope for years to come; Let me follow thus Thy will, Be thou our guide while life shall last, Till my whole glad nature be And our eternal home ! Trained for duty and for Thee. RISE UP, O MEN OF GOD Rise up, O men of God ! Have done with lesser things; Give heart and mind and soul and strength To serve the King of Kings. Rise up, O men of God ! The Church for you doth wait, Her strength unequal to her task; Rise up, and make her great ! Rise up, O men of God ! His kingdom tarries long; Bring in the day of brotherhood And end the night of wrong. Lift high the Cross of Christ !
