THE 1977 REBEL Carlisle Military School Bamberg, South Carolina Editor John England Assistant Editor Rhett Hamilton Business Manager Robert White Photographer Brad Hays Copy Editor Eric Zoot 1 THE GOOD LIFE It’s present at Carlisle — sacking out” during guard and taking it easy. It isn’t a picnic, but. . . 3 . . . we at Carlisle enjoy the happy times, look back at the sad ones, and laugh. 4 5 DEDICATION This year’s dedication goes to Major Phillip A. Sullins Jr. He has been at Carlisle since 1 966. Major Sullins or “Commander” as he is often called is one of the most popular teachers at Carlisle. He is the instructor of Eng- lish, and Chemistry. A brilliant man, he has helped many cadets in times of trouble, and is always willing to lend a helping hand in all types of school activities. He is one of the few types of people that gives the most of himself in everything he does. From all of us on the annual staff, we proudly dedicate the Rebel to you. 6 FACULTY 7 COLONEL WILLIAM R, RISHER, Headmaster Colonel Risher was born in Ehrhardt, South Carolina, in 1 927, attended grade school in Bamberg, and graduated from Carlisle in 1944. Thompson has been a member of the faculty for 35 years and held the job of Commandant of Cadets until this year when he was promoted to Dean of Students. COLONEL EDWARD J. COLLINS, Commandant of Cadets Colonel Collins was born in Cambridge, Mass, and attended Boston Latin. He was a Aviation Cadet from 1 942 to 1943. Col. Hash marks, and or the symbol of the sport that they lettered in are sewed on the C emblem. Supervisor — Mrs. Linda Ott Kitchen Personnel The K.P. Staff has the job of serving the food to 107 hungry cadets, every meal of every day. While Mrs. Ott and the others work hard to follow a carefully planned menu, it is a hard job that usually gets many complaints, but the KP’s weekly pay of $5.00 helps. 40 KP's: LEFT TO RIGHT: Klienbach, Hayes, England, Boulware, Garrett. MILITARY f!’V Montgomery, Murray,, Altstaetter, Brodie. Color Guard The Color Guard is a respectable part of the corps of cadets. The members are important in dress parades, and are espe- cially important in parades away from school. What a life. Getting Ready for Inspection 44 Well, Saturday morning inspec- tion is here, after long work on rooms and self cleanliness. The rooms are spotless, the brass is shined. The hands and faces are washed, and short, neat hair is com- bed. Inspection Tench Hut! Haircuts, uniforms, shoes, rooms, and drill performance are inspected. They are awarded with merits, and punished by reports and demerits. This is one of many times that all cadets work together in order to stand out in military inspections. 45 Drill 46 Dress Parades 47 Staff BN COMMANDER: LTC TIMMS EX. Cross Saber Club The Cross-Sabre Club was erected January of 1962, in memory of a Carlisle graduate that was killed in the Korean War. Also, as part of his memorial, a cadet is given a medal each year for being the most improved cadet. The SHACK as it is commonly called is a place that Non-Commissioned Officers can go on leave nights to watch TV, cook a meal, sleep, or shoot the bull. Thanks go to all that helped work on a fine looking clubhouse. 55 Armory Staff LEFT TO RIGHT: Harward, Aviles, England, SFC Vaughn. Good luck to the rifle team, from the Annual Staff. 66 FEATURES Senior Prophecy The year is 1987, the time is early afternoon, the place is Carlisle Military School. As I look around campus, I see that many changes have occured. Guilds Hall and Risher Barracks are gone and a three story L shaped barracks replaces them. It is Thompson Barracks. The first person I meet is Dan Benke, he is in charge of the Cable TV Station at C.M.S. He said that the Carlisle-Camden game would be broadcast from Delk Memorial Stadium at 4:00. As I reach the Carlisle Bar and Grill, at the rear of Thompson Barracks, I find Thomas Timms standing guard at the door. Thomas is the Sen- ior Army Instructor at the Citadel. As I sit down with one of my old roommates, Rhett Hamilton, I ask him what he is doing now. He said that he is the head bag boy at the Piggly Wiggly in Mt. Pleasant. As we talk, over comes Quincy Tar- rance and Dennis Bolt. Quincy is the French Instructor at Carlisle, and Dennis is in charge of the English Department. Over at the other table is Paul Morris now in charge of the Army Drill Team, and with him is Ricky Painter the Algebra Professor at Carlisle. Way over there in the corner is Jon Hall the Physics Teacher at C.M.S. He is talking with Mark Altstaetter a well known chemist at Dupont. In the middle of the room is Bob White trying to hustle a poor unfortunate teacher at a game of pool. After a few drinks I headed outside to find a ride to the game, and who did I see, but Timmy Quinn driving a New York City Taxi. Well I clim- bed in and decided to go with him to the Bam- berg Municipal Airport to pick up Randy Phillips, John Murray, and Miller Richbourg. They had just returned from an Exposition in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, where they had been trying to raise the lost continent of Atlantis. When I arrived at the stadium in about three pieces, but still able to walk, Manuel Bacallo and Mike Moore met us at the gate. Manuel is now a hit man for the Mafia, and Mike is a SLED agent in South Carolina. In the stands I met Bobby Parnell, who is play- ing Pro Football, and holds the record for the most interceptions in one season. The game is about to start, the teams are on the field with their helmets off as the National Anthem is played by Mark McCaskill, now a trumpet player with the Jazz Band in New Orle- ans. The first half of the game went by very fast with Carlisle getting a good lead over Camden. The half time show was a tremendous success, featuring Richard Morse and his famous circus horses parading about. It is the second half of the game, and what do I hear but the Goodrich Blimp, and who do I see in the blimp, but Bruce Walker. Last time I heard he was making tires for the Goodrich Company in Texas. I guess he has moved up in the world since then. During the second half, with Carlisle running away with the game, who do I see on the side- lines but Rip Rhyne, manager of the football team. All he is doing is drinking the Gatoraid. After the game there is a lot of commotion in the center of the field, and guess who is in the mid- dle of it? Yes, Don McGrady, and he has gotten off with the game ball. That’s right Don is now a “Profession Nuisance” for the government. When I returned to the campus, I saw a truck with the slogan on the side that reads, SOV Gunshop, and whom did I just happen to see in the front seat? None other than Maurice Smith, Maj. Olason, and Sgt. Vaughn. As I left Bamberg I thought how lucky I was to see all my old classmates and friends again. The only people who didn’t show up for the reunion were Johnny Curbelo, who is running a chicken farm in Venezuela, and Randy Grace who couldn’t get leave from Parris Island. Well I better get back to Milwaukee when we are in the process of building the longest bridge in the world across Lake Michigan. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the best of luck to all my classmates and a rich and prosperous life ahead for all of you. The faculty each took a secret ballot, and took their time in filling it out. All were hard to choose from, but only some won the honor in win- ning. For such a contest, it was hard to judge, because all were examples of the “All American Girl”. Col. Stoller frequently related to his friends that of all the interesting things he had done in his long career, his work with the young boys at Carlisle Military School had been the most rewarding. It is our hope that his memory will long be cherished. ADVERTISEMENTS 72 LLOYD MOORE, JR. REALTY Boulevard a+ Gilway P.O.
