Someone once made the naive remark that a truly educated person is one who can call even, thing in the universe by its proper name — one who can condense a cosmos to a clause, a definition. Carlisle would have tripped that fellow out Perhaps the most characteristic feature of such a school as ours is that it sloughs off adjectives faster than they can be applied. Only to- morrow can tell what Carlisle is today. You never know before, and by the time you finally do, it's a new melange. Carlisle’s full of Le Melange . . . .' es: you can literally hear them happening. •yi course, there is always a certain something about Carlisle r. is — just call it Carlisle. No synonym exists; and what Carlisle Carlisle is alone; nothing else is or has it. No snips or snaps can i:: 3 iL any more than a picture can catch a painting. One glance at •_ r pictures on these and the following pages is evidence sufficient mere must be words beyond words, meanings beyond meanings, : ■ Jungs beyond either — things like Carlisle. 5 Carlisle — As is becoming increasingly evident each day, Carlisle has evolved into pretty much of a little city within itself — a micropolis, so to speak, with everything from hotdogs to haircuts within a pebble s fling of every- thing else. The changes and improvements which have been made within the past year or so were, as always, trifocal in purpose: To make Carlisle an even better school; in so doing, to make the school a home; and, above all, to give both aims first priority. Students learn what they live, and live what they learn: consequently, a home is, in the end, every man’s Outfitting a late arrival at the school’s new quarter- master. Carlisle’s new coin-operated washers and dryers are available seven days a week. The school’s new drycleaning service is a welcomed convenience to all. It is not enough, to be a school i 3v from home; Carlisle strives to be a home within a school. An intellectual climate in which any one of the three basic elements :: home, school and church is absent, is as lifeless as would be an actual : sical climate lacking any one of the vital necessities of sustenance, sunlight or air. It is Carlisle’s purpose that cadets be exposed to just those conditions which develop them in mind, body and spirit. A city owes its citizens no less. Cadets lounge in the school’s beautiful new canteen. Although the work was long and hard, it was with a sense of pride and achievement that we toiled — not only with regards to the accomplishments of the annual, but those of the corps of cadets themselves. Practice, practice, practice — it seems that that was all everyone did, was practice for one thing or other ... as if here we are, at last — perfect, or something. This was a year of change at Carlisle: barracks, canteen, laun- dry, uniforms. Even the rules were changed (or bent). Possibly the biggest change we made was from follower to leader — from watcher to player — from Sub-freshmen to Seniors. Yep, there have been some changes. And now we’re leaving — again. It seems we’re always leav- ing: something for something else — somewhere for somewhere else. The members use the clubhouse for their many activities, especially for calling girls. Mostly though, they use it just to get away from barracks. The club has many suppers, and every member looks forward to the annual trip to Atlanta, Georgia, Our advisor, Col. Waddy Thompson, tries to make our club better each year for our use. Since its instigation, it has proved to be an invaluable organization, as well as an incentive for new cadets who strive for their skeeter wings” at mid:semester. Under the able supervision of Major Jack Stead- man, the club has proved a great success, and one of Carlisle’s major assets. CRis£er Mr, Gene V, Risher, our judge for this year’s MISS CARLISLE CONTEST, is a former resident of Bamberg, and a 1950 graduate of Carlisle. After having graduated from Carlisle, Mr. Risher continued his military training and education at The Citadel, where he was graduated in 1954. Immediately thereafter, he served for two years in the United States Army. In 1956 Mr. Risher began a career in journalism as a reporter for the Charleston Evening Post, where he remained until September of 1959, when he left for a year to attend the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Upon his return to the United States in 1961, Mr. Risher joined the United Press International. He was later transferred to Atlanta, and from there to New York. In November of 1966 he was assigned the position of bureau manager for the U.P.I.’s Saigon office, and covered the Viet Nam war until June of 1968. When he returned to the United States, Mr. Risher was assigned coverage of the Presidential campaign of 1968, primarily covering candidate Nixon. Walter The faculty and cadet corps were deeply grieved by the passing away last sum- mer of Captain William H. Walter. Captain Walter began teaching at Carlisle in September of 1964, and in his time served the corps in the capacities of being both an inspiring instructor and band director. Only once in a lifetime does one have the privilege of knowing a man of such fine distinction. It is our hope that his memory will long be cherished. 158 3ln Memoriam Cadet Frazier T. Woolard, III The sudden passing away of Cadet Frazier Woolard last Thanksgiving was to ev- eryone a stunning tragedy. Frazier, a sub-freshman, enrolled at Carlisle in September of 1970, and was a member of Company A. In the brief time that his teachers and friends knew him, he proved to be a fine and promising young man.
