ROY PHILLIPS Editor-in-Chief GEORGE BENTON Assistant Editor GENE RITTER Business Manager FOREWORD Soon another year will be over, and will be- long to the past. We have travelled a long hard way from registration to graduation. We’ve made some friends and a lot of memories, and with each day we learned a little more of life. The time is close when the seniors will walk across one stage and enter a new stage of their lives. With them, they carry a part of Carlisle and, in return, Carlisle retains a part of them. It is my hope that this, the 1964? Rebel, will through the years help in keeping bright our memories of this part of our lives. Thank You, Roy Phillips, Editor. 2 Dedication ...................... WILLIS F. MARTIN We of the annual staff take great pleasure in dedicating the 1964 Rebel to Major Wick Martin. Major Martin has been at Carlisle for 11 years. In his time here he has handled grades and is now in charge of the student bank and advisor to the Golf team. He has seen his son come here to teach, and then go on to continue his education. Major Martin is well known by the cadets, especially on Wednesday. As we have said he is well known and, due to his wit and willingness to help, well liked. We are sure the cadet corps agrees with us that this dedication is well de- served. 4 THE 1964 COLOR GUARD COUNIHAN BECK BARBERO RITTER PRESIDENT Colonel James F. Risher Colonel Risher was born in Hampton County, South Carolina. Upon his graduation from The Citadel he had to choose between a military career and one of teaching. He taught in Colle- ton County and for two years was the Superin- tendent of Ehrliardt High School. He began teaching at Carlisle in 1924, and four years later was made Headmaster. In 1989 he bought Carlisle, and he purchased Camden in 1959. He has held many important positions in commun- ity and national organizations. Col. Risher has in some way helped or influenced every cadet coming to Carlisle. HEADMASTER Colonel William R. After his graduation from The Citadel in 1947 he went to the University of North Carolina for graduate work. In 1948 he came to Carlisle to teach and in 1958 he became headmaster of Carlisle He is very active in the community and takes a true interest in all the cadets. We are very luclcy to have a man such as this for our Headmaster. PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE Colonel Waddy Thompson Lt. Col. Thompson was born in Chat- tanooga, Tennessee. But before this big step is taken, let us, while we are all still together, let our minds wander over the events leading up to this step, let us just once more linger with our memories. Pull- ing back the shades of time, it all seems to have its start about five years ago, five long years. September 1959, all over the nation children were flocking back to school, cheerful, not so willing maybe, but still cheerful. But it was a different looking crew arriving at Carlisle. Some were away from home for the first time, all a bit unsure of themselves. For the next six weeks the rats of the school year 1959-60 would un- dergo a startling ordeal, commonly called “Re- cruit Company”. It is not with this entire rat class that we are concerned, only 40 of them, 40 children, the subfreshman class. Five years later 12 young men would look back to this year and remember. As the year got under way one of those 40 was dismissed from the school. His place was not destined to be vacant long. No- vember 13, 1959 his place was filled, the cast is now all present. These boj s, cast together un- der the same conditions became close friends on the whole, further molding the future of their class. This year was their rat year. I will not bore you here with the details of the minor indigni- ties suffered by them in their new way of life, it shall just pass to say that they were “rats”. Instead we shall try to show you what they saw. This year, in itself, was not an especially event- ful one, but it was this year that set the spark, that paved the way for the greater changes still yet to come. About the middle of the year the telephone booths that were on every section 32 ' re struck by a wave of vandalism. In order -y check this Major Risher moved the tele- j hones into the lobby of Guilds Hall. Hazing is a problem every year, and this was no ex- tption. The unexpected Honor Council hit :.ard, and hazing started to die. Sorrow was not to be excluded from that year. Returning from Easter furlough cadet Sgt. 1 c Zeke Olsen was -::IIed in an auto accident. But sorrow passed and the year drew to its nd. These 40 had lived through it. Some now had rank, but all were a little wiser. Now they hi looked forward to General Orders and the :hance to be a second yearman. At these Gen- eral Orders Maj. William R. Risher was pro- moted to Colonel. The next year they arrived to face the adven- Tiire of being a 2nd yearman. Not all the boys une back, and new names were added to the class of “64”, This was to be true of every year to come, some old friends lost, some new ones _:iined. 1960-61 saw changes in barracks and the uniform. The “Genie Tamps” were added .long with the crests. A public address system 'as installed in barracks this year. The bugle ■wing on each section was now obsolete. Still .oving on, we can’t stop now, they all prepared - face another year. The year 1961-62 saw .anges in everything. Coaches Young and Phillips, Capts. Soukup, Hancock, and Maj. Lnd Mrs, Eargle did not return. Their places 'ere filled by Captains Norman, J,; Jenkins, Davenport, and Martin, G.; also, Lt. Col, Patrick, and Mrs. Walters. Two faculty officers now had their sons teaching along side of them; Capt. “Rock” Norman and Capt. Joe Norman; Capt. “Wick” Martin and Capt. George Martin. More items were added to the uniforms this year, also. Class colors and name tags were added to the regulation uniform. The campus also underwent some major changes this year. During the summer an office building had been erected just in front of the old one. The library was moved into the old office building, and the old library, in the middle of 1st section, was converted into a T, V. room. The commissioned officers of this year saw a chance to add to their income, and placed Pepsi machines in the T.V. room. By the first 6 weeks’ furlough the front campus drive was paved; greatly improving the looks of the campus. This was also an added convenience to the cadets. Before this, when the cadets formed, they would either eat dust or slosh in the mud. The school received a shocking blow at the loss of one of the faculty officers this year. The time was the night before Christmas furlough; the night of the Christmas dance. Everyone was in high spirits. Those attending the dance were looking forward to a special treat. Major William Scaffe, once in the top 10 trumpet players, was to play at the dance. Shortly be- fore he was to play, it was announced that he had died. After Christmas Capt. Hancock returned to take Maj. Scaffe’s place. Kibbee, the cadet captain of tlic band, finished the year doubling as band director. As before the sorrow passed, cadet life went on; “64” continued its way up. 33 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It was this year that the Drill team and Rifle team were organized by Maj. Thompson. Major and Mrs. Sturgeon were in the spotlight this year, also. All can remember the day he passed out cigars; the day he became a father. Another year is now at its end. At the end of this year, Capt. Steadman is promoted to Major. 1962- 68—now the remainder of these 40 and their classmates were juniors, a big year for “64”. The NCO Club, which had been built the year before, was moved to a new location. It now rested across from the Q. M. Store. The sidewalk now around the gym and office was also added this year. The uniform underwent another change. The metal chevrons on the fatigue uniforms were changed. The drill team began wearing a special uniform during performances this year. Before Christmas Capt. Norman was injured in an auto accident. He died during furlough. As before sorrow could not halt the year; Capt. Tiedeman filled in his place. Captains Hancock and George Martin did not return at the year’s start, and their places were filled by Captains Estes and Zemp. This was Capt. Estes second return to the faculty. Capt. Zemp had graduated from Carlisle. Capt. Ragsdale was also added to the faculty. This year the commissioned officers built a new clubhouse. Now the year is nearly over and the class of “64” prepares for “their year”. At commencement Majors Patton and Thompson were promoted to Lt. Cols, and Capt. Martin was promoted to Major. During the summer two things happened con- cerning Carlisle: new classrooms were built and the other resulted from a tragedy. Capt. Ludy Davenport was killed in an auto wreck. 1963- 64—we moved into our last year. Captains Ragsdale and lit. Col. Patrick did not return and Maj. Sturgeon would not resume teaching until after Christmas, Capts. Walters, Gage, and Hattrich were added to the faculty and Capt. Judy filled in for Maj. Sturgeon. Mrs. McLean replaced Mrs. Thompson as school nurse. Our year has seen its share of changes about the campus. The T.V. room was moved under Memorial Barracks. The 1st Sgts. are now wearing .45 cal. pistols to drill and on duty. Before they wore sabers while on duty. Capt. Gage has been instrumental in bringing back the rifle team and the intramural football program. Also, this year work on a new track has been started. This has been but a brief summary of our life over the past five years at school. The school and life here have not been the only changing things. These last five years have seen history made and remade. They were years of strife and un- rest. Our nation has been split by the civil rights dispute; cadets saw the Nixon-Kcnnedy debates on television. Kennedy defeated Nixon for the Presidency by the slightest of margins. Some three years later the same cadets were watching 34 T . when President Kennedy’s assassination v is announced. Then the aftermath that fol- ed—Oswald, the accused assassin, was ar- r s ted and before completely questioned was by Jack Ruby. ’64 saw the death sentence .ded to Ruby. Vice-President Johnson took ■- -v oath as President. These past few years have seen advancements ur space program, also. The U. S. advanced :'r -:n the first unmanned space shot to Gordon • per‘s 22 orbital flight. World governments i;tve also been changing. The French were driven of Algiers and the Congo achieved complete - impendence from England. Cuba held the '■ tlight. It has shown its true colors and now nlv admits Communism. M any things have undergone changes in our v at Carlisle. World history, politics and the ol itself. The campus and uniforms, and ngs like that have been changed, but this is not .t I am thinking of now'. When the class of - 54“ first arrived on the scene at Carlisle, the _ hc opinion of military schools was different fr :n what it is now. The majority of the boys in - ' itary school at that time were there only iuse they could not pass at home, or to keep in out of trouble. Now, over the years, the -'«lie opinion has changed. Because of that .nge the way of life in barracks has also inged. It is now almost a “fad” for parents ' iid their children to military schools, and •w breed of cadets is the result. The cadets, coming to military schools seem smaller, younger, more immature. The whole attitude of the cadets at Carlisle has changed, and it is hard for the “old timers” of the corps to under- stand. It’s true that this is all part of a cycle, but it’s hard for the old cadets to change with this cycle. We have, on a whole, adjusted to this change, but when ever a group of 5th yearmen get together talk will always get around to the “good old days.” History is still being made, but now', for 74 seniors, graduation is more important. Let us stop remembering and look to the future. Good luck to the Class of 1964. 35 GEORGE RENTON President MR. AND MRS. G. A. WALTERS A dvis or BRIGADIERS The Brigadiers, Carlisle’s Cadet Orchestra, has done a fine job this year, under Capt. Sam Walter’s guidance. The cadets of this year’s Brigadiers have put a lot of time and practice into their group, and enjoy doing it. Some, feeling held down by the slower orchestra music, branched out into “Dixie Land”. They call their combo the “Saints Five”. It is a pleasure to have such a group repre- sent our school and dances and other social affairs. Sponsor CARL DAHLSTEDT V ice-President THE FLIGHT CLUB The Flight Club, though small in number, is open to any cadet interested in flying. To these cadets flying is more than an age old dream or a childhood yearning. During and after “earning their wings” they are able to enjoy the thrill of being alone, among the clouds. We, of the annual staff, wish further success to this group of cadets pursuing this interesting educational hobby. Harley, Myers, Rislier, Pacheco. MAJOR McGEE President WALLY GRAMLING Vice -Pre side n t ROY PHILLIPS Secretary THE PHOTO CLUB This club, though still in its infant stage, is fast drawing new members. In the past it was limited to just cadets able to afford expen- sive equipment. Now with less expensive gear, more cadets interested in photography have joined the club. Its members have branched out to taking pictures for the newspaper and the annual. We hope this fast growing club con- tinues its successful climb. In the last couple of years, it’s tone lias changed quite a bit. Boys who want to develop themselves, or even have something to do have joined this club. Men who run track and play field events have found the use of this club to their advantage. Through the Barbell Club, boxing though by the school not a recognized sport has become right popular among the bo3 s. Colonel Captain 1st Lieutenant ‘2nd Lieutenant 1st Lieutenant TRAINING CADRE To the training cadre and its officers is handed one of the hardest jobs of the school year, training the new rat class. The members of this cadre must be well chosen for they are the ones who give the rat class their first im- pression of Carlisle. How the first year men respond to orders and barracks life the whole year, depends largely on the training they re- ceive the first six weeks. We feel that this year’s cadre has lived up to the responsibility given to them. [00 LT. COL. PATTERSON LT, COL. THOMPSON Chairman A dviaor The honor council consists of the battalion commander, adjutant, and captains. Lt. Col, Thompson advises and aids this body of cadets whenever necessary. To these seven cadets fall the job of investigating major infractions of HONOR COUNCIL the rules and passing judgment on such cases. It is not always an easy task, nor is it a restful one. We hope that the cadets which hold this position of trust in the future will keep its tradition alive. The year, as well as the annual, is at its end, yet it is just the beginning. For 74 it is the start, the beginning of a new part in their lives. Here at the year’s end they trade the old for the new. For both the Seniors and the returning under classmen this past year will soon be just a memory, and this annual will be a tangible part of that memory. To both I wish good-luck and give a word of advice. The past and its memories are only a friend on a lonely night. That is the way it should be kept. Our work is in the present, it is the making of the future. Uedica ted 3o 2jli m entorfy CAPT. JAMES LUDV DAVENPORT We, of the 1964 Rebel, place this year’s annual dedication and memoriam to Capt.
