CARLISLE MILITARY SCHOOL BAMBERG, SOUTH CAROLINA P R E S E N T S John M. Anthony Editor-in-C hief Pee Wee Phillips Berry Murray Assistant Editor Business Manager CONTENTS DEDICATION CLASSES ACTIVITIES SPORTS FEATURES MILITARY ' : Seniors! We are about to bid farewell to Carlisle. We have come a long way since the day we first dressed off in a recruit line. When we leave we will take much of Carlisle with us—and, we hope, as another proud graduating class, we will leave much of ourselves be- hind. May this annual and all the memories it contains remember us to Carlisle as affectionately as it will remember Carlisle to us. Thank you, JOHN ANTHONY, Editor. THE 1963 COLOR GUARD RISHER PARHAM STILLWELL SMATHERS To MAJOR WADDY THOMPSON We of the 1963 Rebel are proud to place this annual in dedication to Major Waddy Thompson. In his 20 years at Carlisle, Major Thompson has been directly respon- sible for the military program of the Corps of Cadets. It is greatly due to his work as P. M. S. that Carlisle has been able to maintain its high rank as a military in- stitution. The Corps of Cadets is deeply endebted to Major Thompson for the job which he has done in aiding them and Carlisle, and the Rebel Staff is glad to dedicate the 1963 Rebel to one whose work deserves this reward. THE REBEL STAFF OF CARLISLE Proudly Dedicates This 1963 Rebel 5 PRESIDENT OF CMS Colonel James F. Risher “Character and hard work: two essen- tials to success in life. Play square with your fellow man and take advantage of those opportunities which come you way each day, and you will make your mark on the world.” HEADMASTER OF CMS Colonel William R. Risher Yesterday is gone, tomorrow may never come. Today may hold your only oppor- tunity to make your life worthwhile. COMMANDANT OF CADETS Colonel James M. Grimes Remember and bear in mind, a faithful friend is hard to find; and when you find one that is true, forsake not the old for the new.” PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE Major Waddy Thompson “Opportunities are unlimited for young men who don't know the word ‘can't .” 7 CARLISLE FACULTY Major M. PEE WEE PHILLIPS Assistant Editor BERRY MURRAY Business Manager EARL NEEDS Assistant Business Manager HENRY MOLONY Managing Editor To many people an annual is a sort of “book of memories”— and that’s exactly what a good annual should be. I just hope that the “ ’63” Rebel has been successful in this measure. To me, I guess it’s the proverbial “dream come true.” But like all dreams, there’s a pretty good lesson behind it. Being an editor is fine, but it’s just one small part. Without the advice of Captain Zemp, and many others, there probably would have been no annual. As for the real credit for the Rebel, that goes to men like: Pee Wee Phillips, the Assistant Editor, with whom I sat up many a night until two or three o’clock in the morning making out copy and cracking jokes to keep awake; to Earl Needs, Hank Molony, and Marshall Schofield, who were right there with us roguing the faculty’s coffee and molding many more unforgettable events, but still getting their annual off to press. It has been a lot of fun for the staff as well as a lot of work, but now as this work draws to a close and we wrap up the 1963 Rebel, it is our sincere wish that each man as he looks at these pages will draw a fond memory from them.
