PRESIDENT Colonel James F. Risher Colonel Risher was born in Hampton County, S. C. and graduated in the class of 1911, from The Citadel. He taught in the public schools of Colleton County, and was the Superintendent of Ehrhardt High School for two years. In 1924 he came to Carlisle to teach, and in 1928 was made Headmaster, purchasing the school in 1939. in 1958 he purchased Camden Military Academy, and he now serves as Colonel-President of both schools. Besides being a top rate edu- cator, Colonel Risher has held many im- portant positions in community and na- tional organizations. We, the Cadet Corps of Carlisle, Greatly appreciate the knowledge and influence we have received from such a gentleman as this. HEADMASTER Colonel William R. Risher Colonel W. R. Risher was born in Ehrhardt in 1927. He attended the Bam- berg grade school and graduate from Carlisle in 1944. In 1947 he graduated from The Citadel with a B.S. degree is Physics. After doing graduate work at the University of North Carolina, he came to Carlisle in 1948, where he be- came instructor of Physics. In 1958, Colonel Risher was made Headmaster of Carlisle. He is also active in com- munity affairs, having been vice-presi- dent in charge of public affairs for the U. S. Junior Chamber of Commerce. We are, indeed, very fortunate and thankful to have such a man as our headmaster. 6

THE REBEL STAFF OF CARLISLE Dedicates In Memoriam This 962 Rebel To MAJOR WILLIAM SCAFFE We, of the 1962 REBEL Staff, place this years REBEL in dedication and memoriam to Major William Scaffe. Major Scaffe served Carlisle 14 years ably and with dedication. It is our hope that this record of Carlisle during Major Scaffe’s last year will keep sharp in us the memory of his devotion to Carlisle and the Corps of Cadets.

COMMANDANT OF CADETS Colonel James M. Grimes Lt. Col. James M. Grimes was born in Bamberg, S. C., and attended the public schools of Bamberg, graduating from Bamberg High School. He attended The Citadel and graduated from Wofford with an A.B. degree. Upon graduation from Wofford, he was commissioned to a 2nd Lt. in the U. S. Army Reserves. During World War II he was a Captain in the South Carolina State Guard. Col. Grimes has been at Carlisle 26 years where he has served as Commandant of Cadets. He presently teaches Ameri- can History. Through the guidance of Col. Grimes, cadets have found a fuller and richer meaning in Carlisle. PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE Major Waddy Thompson Major Waddy Thompson was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. During his high school years he attended Notre Dame, also in Tennessee. In 1942 he graduated from The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina, and then joined the faculty at Carlisle. For twenty years Major Thompson has served as P.M.S. He has not only attained the respect of cadets, but also a prominent place among the citizens of Bamberg. It is to Major Thompson, that the Carlisle ca- dets owe much of their leadership abili- ties and esprit de corps. 7
