Carlisle Mi, PETE BENNOTTI Editor -in- Chief STANLEY ESCUDERO Assistant Editor ED SALTERS Sports Editor CARL FERGUSON Business Manager DEDICATION W«. MaJd To you, Mrs. Rice, we, the Rebel Staff of 1960, are proud and happy to dedicate this annual. We owe you a great deal, not only for your help in the library, but as a friend to whom we can turn when we are in need of help. Work in the library, your efforts to produce an enjoyable newspaper for the Corps of Cadets, and for many other rea- sons we salute you, Mrs. Rice. In this way we wish to express our appreciation and love for the time you have dedicated to Carlisle and its students. President Headmaster Young Gentlemen: Your reputation is what men think you are. Your character is what God knows you are. If you are interested in success, look well to your character, and your rep- utation will take care of itself. James F. Rusher, Colonel-President. Young Gentlemen: Character and hard work are two essen- tials to success in life. Play square with your fellow man and take advantage of those opportunities which come your way each day, and you will make your mark on the world. William R. Rlsher, M ajor-II eadmaster. 3 PROLOGUE As another great year of Carlisle Cadet life comes to a close, we of the Rebel Staff, through careful planning, team work, and concise but complete composition, wish to present to our fellow cadets, the faculty, and other readers of the 1960 Rebel, not merely a yearbook, but something that can be looked back into over and over again with fond memories. In this presentation, we have portrayed the life of a cadet at Carlisle. We have reviewed scenes of the military structure, scholastic program, and building of the school. In doing this we have tried to tell the story of the school and the people within it. We sincerely hope that our endeavor to form and compose a synopsis of the life, and a place where what may well be the turning point in many a boy’s life where he transforms childhood into manhood, will surpass your utmost expectations. 4 THE COLOR GUARD Rollins, Reid, J. It has been our aim to produce a yearbook which will bring back pleasant memories of years at Carlisle—the fun and companionship the students shared; the hours spent enriching our minds in the classroom and developing our personalities through extra-curricular activi- ties. This book attempts to record the happen- ings of a most important phase of our lives. My sincere thanks and appreciation go to the staff and to the faculty officers for their untiring efforts in helping to get this material ready for the press. The members of the staff are chosen by the editor for their journalistic abilities as well as their ability to stick to a project until it is finished. They begin their task by compiling the ma- terial and they write the assignments given them by the editor. When the articles are finished, they are proof read, typed, and taken to the newspaper office where the paper is printed on proof strips. These strips are proof read again and then attached to an old copy of the paper and this “dummy” paper is once again taken to the newspaper office for the final printing. The newspapers are then given to the cadets free of charge and the school absorbs the cost. The experience gained from working on the newspaper as well as knowledge gained from attending various conventions gives the Bugle Staff members a good foundation for a future career in journalism. It is composed of the company commanders, the Major Executive, the Captain Adjutant, and the Battalion Commander who is the co-chairman, along with Major Waddy Thompson as faculty advisor. On the shoulders of this group rests the re- sponsibility of hearing the cases of cadets ac- cused of major breeches of regulations and then judging the testimony. After carefully weigh- ing all the evidence presented before them they make their decision and send their written rec- ommendation to the Headmaster for final con- sideration. Serving on the Honor Council is a test of the integrity of the officers since they must be fair and impartial in all cases even though at times some of the cadets who are brought before the Honor Council are some of their best friends. 62 CROSS SABRE CLUB Front, Standing, Left to Right: Salters, Gray, Barnes, Benxotti, Frenkel, Blanke, Womble, Perdue, Lamar. Rodney Cul- well is chairman, and Major Waddy Thompson is the faculty advisor and treasurer. One of the buildings on the campus has been outfitted by the Cross Sabre Club with furni- ture and a television. The Training Cadre is a select group of Ca- dets, chosen by Major Waddy Thompson, whose jobs it is to train the new cadets entering school each year. The Cadre is composed of three platoons with three squads in each platoon. There are twenty- one non-commissioned and five commissioned officers on the staff of the Cadre. Of these, there is one Lt. Col., one Captain, three Lts., nine corporals, and eleven sergeants. The length of the training period depends on how fast the new recruits learn. It begins two days before the old cadets arrive and ends ap- proximately six weeks later. This year the Cadre was a success, as it lias been since it was started four years ago. On the ninth of September, one hundred and thirty-five recruits were placed under the direc- tion of the Cadre and training period began. It ended five weeks later on October the fifteenth. The new recruits then were assigned to their companies, and so ended the Training Cadre of 1960. 66 BEAUTY CONTEST 67 Miss Beverly Sowell Sponsored by PETE BENNOTTI MISS CARLISLE OF 1960 as selected by February 12, (960 1st Lt. One of the main problems the Cyclones had this season was lack of height which hurt them as they played some of the better teams in the The two most important games of the year were those against Camden Military. After los- ing the first, the Cyclones made up for it in the last game of the season which was against the Camden Cadets. INTRAMURALS Captain Threat A dvis or Bobby Drake A dvisor The intramural program was organized for those Cadets who for one reason or another couldn’t participate in Varsity Sports. Intra- murals help build moral, esprit de corps, and are good for the conditioning of the body. This year, under the guidance of Captain Threat and Bobby Drake, the intramural pro- gram has given the Cadets a chance to play football, softball, tennis, and blitzball. A ping- pong tournament has caused much interest. 86 HIRSCH TYLER UNIFORM COMPANY PRECISION UNIFORMS Distinctive Styles • Superior Quality 5 5 5 5 51 5 1 3 5 I 51 51 i I J 51 51 5 5 $ 10th and BERKS STREETS PHILADELPHIA 22, PA. MacArthur CARLISLE MILITARY SCHOOL training is designed to develop alertness for opportunity and the skill and ability with which to make the most of opportunity, THE IRVING L. WILSON COMPANY was organized a little more than five years ago because the founder of the company was interested more in oppor- tunity than in security. That there was a glorious opportunity to specialize in the manufacture of military school and college uniforms seemed to be self- evident and a challenge which the Irving L. Wilson Company has accepted. We are dedicated to the proposition of producing better uniforms at reasonable prices and to give our customers a high degree of personalized service. We are proud to be one of the uniform suppliers of the Carlisle Military School and we hope by the way in which we serve you that we will continue to merit this privilege. Irving L.
