JOE KERSHAW Editor-in-Chief KLENKE BREDENBERG Assistant Editor JACK BAKER Business Manager CARLISLE MILITARY SCHOOL Presents THE 1958 REBEL DEDICATION IWird. peddle W). J ennedty A milestone will be reached at the end of this year by the retire- ment of Mrs. Jessie W. Kennedy, who lias served faithfully for the past twenty-three years as Matron. The announcement of Grandma’s retirement has saddened all of her boys, but it is one richly deserved. During her long years of serv- ice, she has been responsible for the complete operation of the kitchen and messhall and the preparation of three meals a day for the entire Corps. In spite of her important and time consuming duties, she has always had time to use her engaging and warm personality, her sympa- thetic understanding, and her genuine interest in Carlisle, to endear herself to Carlisle men—having earned her the affectionate name, Grandma, many years ago. Our thanks to you, Grandma, for what you have come to mean to Carlisle. We will miss you, hut wish for you the best in a long and happy life. OUR HEADMASTER Colonel James F. Risher Young Gentlemen: Don’t worry if you have not found yourself to be a genius. Re- member, Civilization lias always moved along on the shoulders of ordinary men who have a simple faith in God, their fellow man, and themselves. Sincerely yours, James F. Risher, Colonel-Headmaster. 3 FOREWORD Graduation is nearly here, but before we leave, let us look back and see what Carlisle has given us. Carlisle has placed in our hands “The Lamp of Knowledge.” The military life has disciplined us in mind and body. In this book, we have tried to bring back some of these prec- ious moments through the medium of words and pictures, and we hope that when you look into this book in the future, it will bring back memories of the best days of your life. 4 COLOR GUARD The colors of the United States are a symbol of the great- ness of this country. This symbol must be guarded and pro- tected from any aggression. The Color Guard is organized for this purpose. The Color Guard is made up of four sergeants, two of them, master sergeants. They serve on the Battalion Staff when not in formation as the Color Guard. Hickmax, Schultz, Ross, Laxgstox CARLISLE Lt. Col. James M. Grimes Commandant of Cadets A. Club members have an opportunity to broaden their personal experiences, to de- velop and use special abilities and skills, and to learn the satisfaction of giving service to fellow students and teachers. Every club member has a responsibility for bringing good will to the library. Through his friendly attitude, better public relations are established which increase library service among the cadets. The Brigadiers played for several March of Dimes Dances and re- ceived much praise from the Corps. The Brigadiers have proved that they can give an excellent performance whenever they play. The band usually has a few engagements in and around Bamberg, and they have also performed outside of the city. The Brigadiers prefer to play as a whole unit but can be broken down into “combos” when this is called for. BRIGADIERS First Row: Spears, Eckard, W. F., Ferguson, Bennotti, Holley. Major Waddy Thompson is the faculty advisor of this organization. The duty of this group is to assign judicial punishment. In such a case the party is given a hearing by the Honor Council and all the evidence, testi- monies, and witnesses arc brought together. The verdict and punishment is then reached by the Honor Council and is turned over to the Headmaster for his approval. This organization at Carlisle is the most respected of all. Great responsi- bility is given to this group and discipline of the corps depends upon them. 64 CROSS SABER CLUB The Cross Saber Club is one of the most honored and respected organiza- tions in school. It is composed of the Commissioned Officers of the battalion, the staff, and the band. The men of this club have frequent meetings to discuss matters pertain- ing to the development and betterment of Carlisle. The judgment and ability of the officers determines the success or failure of the Cadet Corps. These men must set the example for the battalion at all times. They are selected because of their willingness to work, honor, loyalty, and duty. And because of this they have obtained one of the highest honors at Carlisle, that of serving as a cadet officer. It is composed of a picked group, chosen for their military superiority, leadership ability, and character. The purpose of the Cadre is to instill the basic fundamentals of close-order drill into the new recruits, and in this endeavor they were eminently successful. Due to the past successes that the Cadre has enjoyed, this method of training will undoubtedly continue to be used at Carlisle. First Row, Left to Right: Kershaw, Brown, Burnett, Cone, Fazio, Leary. Membership in the club is limited to those boys who have received their block letters in the major sports which are baseball, football and basketball. Managers are also admitted after serving as such for two years. An initiation is given to the boys that want to become members of the club. Developing leadership, promoting better sportsmanship, and adding to the athletic program are the purposes of this club 82 RETREAT The gray line is formed. The sun turns the sky to red, The Corps pays its formal tribute. The earth is ready for bed. Silence is only broken by the mournful notes of retreat; then the last note has sounded. The universe is darkened as covered by a sheet; Retreat is to pay homage To that beautiful flag we love, and beg for forgiveness from Him who abides above. 83 HIRSCH TYLER UNIFORM COMPANY PRECISION UNIFORMS Distinctive Styles • Superior Quality Designed And Made For CARLISLE MILITARY SCHOOL AND OTHER LEADING MILITARY SCHOOLS 10th and BERKS STREETS PHILADELPHIA 22, PA. BAMBERG, SOUTH CAROLINA THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SECURITY— THERE IS ONLY OPPORTUNITY! General Douglas A. MacArthur Carlisle Military School training is designed to develop alertness for opportunity and the skill and ability with which to make the most of the opportunity. THE IRVING L. WILSON COMPANY was organized a little more than five years ago because the founder of the company was interested more in opportunity than in security. That there was a glorious opportunity to specialize in the manufacture of military school and college uniforms seemed to be self-evident and a challenge which the Irving L. Wilson Company has accepted. We are dedicated to the proposition of producing better uniforms at reasonable prices and to give our customers a high degree of personalized service. We are proud to be one of the uniform suppliers of the Carlisle Military School and we hope by the way in which we serve you that we will continue to merit this privilege. IRVING L.
