The conference record was 8-6 with a 14-14 mark overall. Completing in three different toumeys, their best placement was fifth in the Indianola Tournament. Leading hitters on the team were Deena Chipp L416, Andrea Bishop L359L and Pen- ny Rhoten L333; Chipp also led in hits t35i and shared stolen bases thi with Jonda Black. Vi Baccam scored the most runs OD, Nancy Stover had the most RBPs OD, and Beth Hayes had the most walks t14i. Carrie Hunter and Andrea Bishop led the team in fielding percentage. Tracy Parson handled the pitching chores with an earned run average of 2.03. Stover and Black were named to the first team all-conference with Parson and Chipp on the second team. Earning honorable mention were Baccam, Bishop, Hayes, and Hunter. A tie with West Marshall for second place in the conference was earned by the baseball team with its 10-4 mark. Overall, the team finished the year with 14 wins and 9 losses. Ron Rinehart was the leading pitcher with 11 wins and 2 losses and an ERA of 1.71. The team had an excellent batting average of .305 with six players above the magical .300 mark--David Schnathorst 03700, Brian D. Keeney 0338, Ron Rinehart C3290, Andy Pickering 03140, Steve Koester 03080, and Craig Wilson L303; Keeney also led in horn runs m, stolen bases 05L and RBPs 921 Matt Bruckman led the team in walks received 060 and strikeouts 090 with Schnathorst having the most hits 000. Rinehart scored the most runs Q60. Named to the all-conference first team were Ron Rinehart and Brian D. Keeney with Chad Scandrett, Steve Wadstrom, and Steve Koester on the second unit. Honorable Mention was received by Mark Cooper, Matt Bruckman, and Craig WiISOn. Both Keeney and Rinehart were named to the first team all-district with Schnathorst and Cooper on the second team. Varsity volleyball entered its second season with the team improving its match record to 8 wins, 11 losses, and 2 ties, including a games record of 30 wins and 35 losses. In the first Heart of Iowa Conference Tourna- ment, the team finished third, narrowly missing out on advancing to the championship match. Statistical leaders included Nancy Stover with points on serves 0615, ace serves 675, and passing 0245; Deena Chipp in assistsAsets 086-2005; Andrea Bishop in spikes 024-1615 and ace spikes 685; and Julie Hogue in serving percentage t251 of 257 for 98Wo5 and receptions 059 of 2015. Included in the match wins were victories over Saydel t3-25, South Hamilton t3-l, 2-05, Ballard t2-0, 3-05, Johnston t3-05, and Bondurant-Farrar t3-05. The team claimed wins over Saydel tZ-ll, Roland-Story t2-0l, S.E. Warren tZ-ll, Indianola t2-Ol, SOuth Hamilton t2-Ol, Nevada Q-ll, Johnston t2- ll, Bondurant-Farrar t2-Ol, and Ballard t2-0l. The only losses were three-game matches to Pella Christian and West Marshall. Fourth-place fmishes at both the Clarke Invitational and the Monroe Invitational topped the efforts of the boys cross-country team. The team lost dual meets to Nevada and Southeast Polk. Other invitational placements included fifth at Ballard, sixth at Hoover, and seventh at both Pella Christian and Pleasantville. In the Heart of Iowa race, they finished fifth with Eric Southward having the best individual placement-- seventh. Bernie Darr led the team in the Districts, placing 66th overall. The best individual time for the sea- son was turned in by Southward with a clocking of 10:39; he was also named the team captain with Darr named as the Future Leader. The duo topped the team in most meets, leading them to fourth place in the Heart of Iowa Con- ference with Guenthner xplacing fifth and Claman finishing seventh. Other invitational placings include fifth at Monroe and Clarke, sixth at Ballard and Pleasantville, and tenth at Pella Christian. Guenthner finished the District in 39th place with Claman, the teamts captain, close behind in 45th place. Guenthner, named as the Future Leader, had the best time for the season with a clocking of 13:58. West Marshall and Nevada shared the H01 crown while the Wildcats and North Polk shared the runner-up spot with 5-2 marks. Overall the team finished with six wins and three losses. Chad Scandrett was both the teams leading rusher and tackler. Other leading tacklers were David Schnathorst, Mitch Olson, and Jon Wilbur. Tough defense was a major part of the Wildcat game plan as they shut out four of their opponents and held two others to only one touchdown apiece. Team captains were Dan Kruse, i Robb Moulton, Garry Patterson, and Scandrett. Three players were named to the all-conference first team-- ; Wilbur, Scandrett, and Kruse tpunterl Six were named to the second team--Schnathorst, Chris Sprouse, Kruse tquarterbacky, Moulton, Clyde Squires, and Olson. They were District champions after an exciting overtime thriller with Pella Chris- tian and a tight four-point win over Grinnell before toppling to Perry in the Substate Final. A 10-4 mark in conference play placed the Wildcats in third place. Dan Kruse dominat- ed the team statistics, averaging 18 points and 9 rebounds a game as well as leading the team in steals. Jim Peterson pumped in 12 points, David Schnathorst had 9 points, and Andy Pickering added 7 points as the Wild- W cats averaged 57 points offensively. Pickering led the team in assists with over four per game. Defensively, the team gave up 48 points a contest. Senior Dan Kruse repeated 1, on the all-conference first team as well as earning All-State recognition. He was also named to compete in the All-Star Basketball game during the summer of 1987. They finished the season with eighteen wins and fourteen losses, only one debate win out of fourth place. The two tough topics that were debated this year were RESOLVED: Should the federal government raise the 55 mph speed limit to 65? and RESOLVED: Should the state of Iowa limit settlements in tort liabil- ity suits? Two juniors earned the honor of all-conference debaters--Phillip Wilson and Amy Churchill. A wide variety of concert experiences encompassed the concert choir schedule this year with performances both in school and in Des Moines. The choir received a Division II at the State Large Group Contest. Highlighting the spring season was the enjoyable Anything Goes as well as both the swing show and spring concert. Concert choir section leaders this year were Jenny Parker--soprano, Karla Brick--alto, Randy Rothfus-tenor, and Tracy Routon--bass. Highlighting a busy instrumental music year was the concert bandis trip to Chicago to participate in the Six Flags over Mid-America Band Festival where they earned a Division I ratings. At that competition, three band mem- bers earned outstanding musician awards: Dan Still on trumpet and Alicia Burton and Heidi Tedrow on french horn. The band also earned a Division I rating at the State Large Group Contest--their four straight top rating. Competing in the Perry Band Olympics, band members had 29 entries, coming home with 24 Division I ratings. Junior Howard Hirsch on flute qualified for the presti- gious All-State Band for the second year in a row. The J azz Band also had an outstanding year as they qualified for their fourth straight State J azz Championships, placing tenth overall. They earned their fifth straight Division I rating in the State J azz Band Contest. Other placings in- cluded first at NWMSU, second at the Jack Oatts Jazz Festival, and third at SCIBA. Outstanding jazz performers at the various contests were Marcia Day, Scott Hugen, Brandon Cox, Alex Camp, Dan Kruse, Dan Still, Aaron Koch, Phillip Wilson, Stephanie Maxwell, and Marc Cataldo. That relay team also qualified to compete in the Drake Relays. As a team, the Wildcats were first at Urbandale McDonalds and the Adel Invitational, second at the Wildcat Relays, third in the District, fourth at the Pleasantville and Norwalk Invitationals, fifth at Grinnell and Johnston, and eighth at Knoxville.
