SOFTBALLERS ADVANCE TO REGIONAL Ix FIRST ROW: Andrea Bishop, Sonja Moore, Nancy Stover, Tracy arla Brick, Carrie Hunter, Julie Hogue, Jonda Black, Beth Hayes, Shanyn Cherkas. An always tough schedule against some of the toughest teams in central Iowa faced the softball team as they ended the season by advancing to the regionals. The team finished with 18 wins and 13 losses, including fifth place with a 7-7 record in the strong Heart of Iowa Conference race. Besides placing second in the Sectional Tournament, they took third place in the lndianola Tournament. Infielder Nancy Stover was named as first-team aII-conference while pitcher Tracy Parson and outfielder Vi Baccam were placed on the second team. Another Heart of Iowa Conference championship awaited the 'Cats as they lost but one game in conference play. The team finished with its best season record ever--23 wins and 3 losses, including a 15-game winning streak and a ranking of seventh in the state. They also won the Martensdale Tournament. With a team batting average of .338, seven Wildcats hit above .300-- Denny Schnathorst L484i, Shawn Heggen L432i, Joe Wolfe L379i, Scott Mooers L354; John Mangello L347i, Steve Koester L344; and Brian D. Keeney t.311i. Schnathorst led the team in hits t44i, doubles OD, and RBl's O9; Heggen led the team in home runs t9i and tied in stolen bases i14i with Mangello. Best pitching records were turned in by Eric Johnson t9-2i and Mike Bartholomew 0-D. Named to alI-conference first team were Bartholomew, Schnathorst, Heggen, and Mangello. Second teamers included Johnson, Wolfe, and Keeney. Earning special mention was Koester with Mooers receiving honorable mention. Heggen and Schnathorst received first team AlI-District with Bartholomew, Johnson, a Mangello on second team. Heggen also played in the AIl-Star Baseball team. SEASON RECORD Clarke S.E. Polk S.E.
