An always tough schedule against some of the toughest teams in central Iowa faced the softball team as they ended the season by advancing to the regionals. The team finished with 18 wins and 13 losses, including fifth place with a 7-7 record in the strong Heart of Iowa Conference race. Besides placing second in the Sectional Tournament, they took third place in the lndianola Tournament. Infielder Nancy Stover was named as first-team aII-conference while pitcher Tracy Parson and outfielder Vi Baccam were placed on the second team. Another Heart of Iowa Conference championship awaited the 'Cats as they lost but one game in conference play. The team finished with its best season record ever--23 wins and 3 losses, including a 15-game winning streak and a ranking of seventh in the state. They also won the Martensdale Tournament. With a team batting average of .338, seven Wildcats hit above .300-- Denny Schnathorst L484i, Shawn Heggen L432i, Joe Wolfe L379i, Scott Mooers L354; John Mangello L347i, Steve Koester L344; and Brian D. Keeney t.311i. Schnathorst led the team in hits t44i, doubles OD, and RBl's O9; Heggen led the team in home runs t9i and tied in stolen bases i14i with Mangello. Best pitching records were turned in by Eric Johnson t9-2i and Mike Bartholomew 0-D. Named to alI-conference first team were Bartholomew, Schnathorst, Heggen, and Mangello. Second teamers included Johnson, Wolfe, and Keeney. Earning special mention was Koester with Mooers receiving honorable mention. The young girls' cross country team placed third in the Heart of Iowa Conference, paced by the efforts of juniors Sandy Claman and Mary Wedemeyer tfourth and fifth, respectivelyi. Claman turned in th best time for the year with a 13:29 clocking at Nevada. Team placements included second at Hoover, third at Pleasantville, fourth at Monroe and Nevada, fifth at Clarke, sixth at Ballard, and eighth at Pella Christian. The team lost dual meets with both Southeast Polk and Nevada. The team lost a dual meet with Nevada and placed second in a triangular. Other meet placements were fifth at Monroe and the HOI Conference; sixth at Clarke; seventh at Hoover; and eighth at Pella Christian, Ballard, and Nevada. The '85 campaign was a banner one for the Wildcats as they won their first seven games to earn an 8th-place state ranking before dropping a close game at State Center. They finished with an 8-1 mark overall, including a title tie in conference play with West Marshall with a 6-1 mark. The lone defeat, however, cost them a chance for their first trip to the state playoffs. Strong defense and a good rushing attack marked the games with many records being set during the season. Brian D. Keeney set six new records: longest rush in a game f81 yardsi, most yards in a game i286i, most yards in a season U388; TD's in a game f4; most points in a game Q6; and career tackles f199i. He was ranked fourth in the state in rushing. Other records included most tackles in season iChad Scandrett--104i, longest field goal ery Guldbrandsen--42 yardsi, all kickoff average records fMark Cooperi, and longest kickoff return fTony Rodman--87 yardsi. Three one-act plays, under the directorship of Mr. Ocasio, were the offer- ings for the fall Drama Department production. The play, Who Am I This Time?, featured Tracy Else and Beth Hayes in a light drama of a meek young man whose personality dramatically changes according to what role he plays in various stage productions. The mystery thriller, Sorry, Wrong Number!, featured Suzanne Smith as the invalid woman, whose telephone is her only lifeline, frantically striving to report a murder plot, not realizing that the murder would be her own. Rebuilding from last year's heavy graduation losses, the varsi- ty still managed to amass twelve wins against eight losses, advancing to the second round of District play. The Wildcats finished third in conference play with eight wins and six losses, paced by first-team alI-conference center Dan Kruse. Highlight of the season was knocking state-rated Johnston from the ranks of the undefeated in January. It was a tough season for the team emotionally as they played in a number of close contests--winning some and losing others. The team averaged 53 points offensively with Kruse being the only player in double figures for the season at 19 points a game. He also led the team in rebounding, steals, and blocked shots with Darren Hardersen leading the team in assists. Defensive- ly, the team gave up 50 points a game. A variety of activities kept the band students busy this year. The concert band earned its third straight Division I in Large Group Contest. Members also earned nine l's in the State Solo and Ensemble Contest in the spring. Again taking part in the Perry Band Olympics, students brought home thirteen individual I's and five group l's. The band was first in their division and third overall. In the fall Howard Hirsch became the first student in over twenty years to qualify for the prestigious All-State Band. Eight band members were honored to play in either the SCIBA freshmen or high school honor bands. The Jazz Band qualified for the State Championships, placing tenth overall. The group was first at NWMS, second at UNI, and fourth at SCIBA, as well as earning a Division I rating at the State Jazz Contest. Out- standing performer awards were earned by Beth Hayes, Jenny Wistrom, Marcia Day, Alex Camp, Brandon Cox, Dan Kruse, Tracy Else, Phillip Wilson, and Craig Wilson.
