FIDDLER: SIVIASHINGN SUCCESS A fiddler on the roof! Let me explain some Jewish traditions! The Drama and Music Departments outdid themselv again this year with their excellent performances of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, under the directions of Mrs. Parson, Mr. Chader, and Mr. Morrissey. Recreating the characters of Joseph Stein's book were Rob Ness as Tevye the dairyman, and Karol Ferguson as his wife, Golde. Tevye explains how he and his fellow villagers of Ana- tevka, a small community in Czarist Russia, live by tradition. There were traditions for everything--how to eat, how to dress, how to pray, how to survive . . . Be- cause of these traditions, everybody knows who he is and what God expects him to do. Tradition determines that the father must scrounge and scramble for a living . . . that mother must make a proper, quiet home . . . that the daughters perform their household chores. . . that the sons study at school and learn a trade. The Rabbi an the Constable live by their traditions, and so do the bak and beggar, the tanner, the tailor, and of course, Tevy the rnilkman who philosophizes: without tradition, life would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof! The produc- tion was put on for four performances to enthusiastic crowds who gave each night's performance a standing ovation. Mr. Stan Skopit was the special advisor on the Jewish customs. .
