EARLY DAYS AT THE INDIAN SCHOOL WELCOME TO CARLISLE 1 Indians have long been associated with Carlisle because of the Indian school for which Carlisle is known throughout the United States. Here Jim Thorpe, named the greatest- athlete of this century, start¬ ed his career. Although we now have no Indians in Carlisle, last summer in con¬ nection with the premier of the Thorpe movie, an Indian Princess visited us from Oklahoma City and here presented to the Governor of Pennsylvania, Governor John S. Fine, war bonnets of honor. Today, though museums contain many pictures of it, the Carlisle Indian School (1879- 1918) is no more; yet we remember our debt to the First Americans, and have chosen an Indian Theme for our 1952 Oracle. In this book we invite you to visit our Carlisle High School and here to see its members. As we emulate the courage, skill, and physical strength of these Ind¬ ian Americans, may we, too, grow to be good Americans, better equipped to meet life squarely and to face the future un¬ afraid.
