WE, WHO CALL ourselves the '49ers, wish to dedicate this book to all pioneers everywhereg especially to those who, in the past, present, and future, have had, and will have, the courage to try something new. This book is meant to represent the strivings and accomplishments of many who are about to explore life in its reality. May they have the forti- tude and faith which will be re- quired of them, even as did the first '49ers who dared to explore beyond the horizon. ,ix . i 40 'Il MW! r Q- f 'QW swirl tid it l etrfflw it inf! ,X We Q92 ru - r ii! - -,A, W A Y f ti! lil ,fm l F 1 tilt Wt Q It mf bfi r f i fi, Fir' 1 x fjfm yi Xi Iii ir- ,He-1-i.4,,+j, ,- ,, in 7' ?9F?39ir o je ly7il LXR S f 5 9 ,ff K i I - Q 1? 1' r 7-2 - , A - f if . . 9 45 YN i ff S' 3 few Q K ZQ 1 .' The Thespian troop No. 214 had their 1949 for- mal initiation in the auditorium with the senior high school as audience. To be received into this society, one must have excelled in his field of dramatics, be it acting, directing, or staging. We Shook The Family Tree g F Pioneering from another school right into the role of Hildegarde has been Jackie Millen. She and a splen- did supporting cast brought the prob- lems of everyday teen-age life to a tense climax in the dramatic club play, We Shook the Family Tree. Co-starred with Jackie was Donald Hartman who indirectly shook the auditorium with his knickers and lov- able disposition in the role of Freddie. Everything eventually straightened it- self out, and they lived happily ever after. When our country was being settled the people traveled from East to West, but in their class play the juniors tried desperately to go from St. Louis to New York, without success. HMugs7' McGinnis, however, in the major role, kept her covered wagon right in St. Louis for the fair. Each person gave his co-0pera- tion both on stage and off to Miss Derr, directress. Miss Derr certainly found gold in her choice of play and cast. Uur Gold ine--Uf emorie '4Lest we forgetla' - That need not be said, for how could we forget those wonderful years in C. H. S.? How could we forget the headaches caused by those tardy bells that were initiated in our sophomore year! How proud we were as juniors when the honor of being hall patrolmen was bestowed upon us! Or the way we always forgot our arm bands! Could we ever forget 'jumping Jewels' - our junior class play, or the party afterwards! Our 'ajunior Prom with its extraordinary decorations and entertainment, both carrying out our 49er theme! How sad we were when we lost our 6'Hendy!,' How could we forget the sheer ecstasy, in spite of the work involved therein, of being a senior! ' The way poor Shakespeare suffered in our English classes! Those conferences with Mr. Hench! Our senior class play! Or the fun we had on our class ride! Those home-room parties! The swell formals sponsored by the Hi-Y, the Y-Teens and the Girl Scouts! Could we ever forget the impressive Baccalaureate service and the tears in our hearts and eyes at Commencement! Could we ever forget these things? Never! They are too much a part of our lives and too much a part of the wonderful years we spent in the classrooms and halls of our beloved C. H. S. Plannin The Past To The Future Sitting along a stream one day I was panning for gold, and I really struck it rich. As the water flowed from the pan, it uncovered a message which I think should be printed here. The message stated that each of the following talents, abilities, and characteristics should be given to the persons designated. Dick 'Calaman,s presidencies to Bob Park Betty Wenger's piano talent to Peggy Gibson Bob Brough's shop ability to Gene Williams Lois Enck's figure to Joan Dreher Wayne Rutz,s salesmanship to Bob Baish Joby Stoopsis hair to Peggy Bistline Bob Spence,s ties to Joe Roach Elaine Adams' smile to Joanne Honey Sam Black's friendliness to George Bogar Clara Kollasi driver's license to Nancy Franklin Emmet Myers, quietness to Donnie Hartman Carolyn 0cker's petiteness to Ann Moorehead Bill Mumper's laugh to Turtle Jenkins Diz Adams' glasses to Muggs McGinnis Jack Mulgrewas dancing feet to Bob Keller Madeline Stum's good looks to Jean Steele Dick Stanton's sodability to George Brown Doris Gleimis intelligence to Roxy Eppley Glenn Biggsis football talent to Don Clark Shirley Shetron's height to Margie Fickel Verle Piper's clothes to Dwight Beery Audrey Lipskeyis red hair to Mary Bistline Harold Russel's Wizzer7, to Cary Ahl Betty Hoch,s May I help you?,7 to Wilma Hoover Jim Jumper7s shyness to Dick Eberts Lois Arnold's automobiles to Doris Arnold Bob Shearer's wonderful voice to Bill Frye Sally Revie,s terrific art ability to Betty Jenkins Bob Jenkins, trips to York to Jake Trimmer and Helen Saul's giggle to Jackie Rynard. After I drove a stake in the ground to prove this gold discovery was mine, I went to town to file my claim. When I came back l found another message, only this one was attached to my stake. What follows is the message. lt has been so deemed by the powers that be, that the senior class of Carlisle High School in the year of nineteen hundred and forty-nine should remind the underclassmen of all the joys and pleasures which will be theirs, the wonderful la s which they can work for and enjoy' the football, baseball and basketball P Y 1 1 Uames whether they win, lose or drawg the track meets where even the spectators get windedg the swell class advisersg the job of picking class rings and name cardsg the efiiciency of the office staff, detention hall and heavy homework assign- mentsf, And right at the end of the message it said: Let us not forget to remind coming classes that high school days are generally one's happiest and should and will be full of headaches, Periscope and Oracle, heartaches, laughter, tears, songs, color, teachers, and classmates. You who have so much more than we did in 1849, make the most of your good fortune. Elaine Adams Harry P.
