Loud the songs of praises ringing, For the debt we owe to you. Other high schools have their banners, With their colors dull or bright, But the noblest and the fairest ls the Carlisle Green and White. We will always strive to keep thee Honored high above the rest. On the diamond, in the schoolroom We will give thee of our best, Ever upward, ever onward, 'Til our acme we attain, Then we'll graduate with honor And perpetuate your fame. When we enter life's stern battles, And our High School days are o'er, When the curtain of our school life O'er our simple stage shall lower, We will ever think of high school, And the pleasures at their height, Spent beneath the noble colors Of the Carlisle Green and White. Dum. Her quiet manner and sweet smile have been an inspiration tor us all, while her hand on the helm ot our school lite has guided us into the port of understanding. Her ability to go silently forward and accomplish the work she has to do is a quality all admire, yet it is but one of her many virtues. Teacher, par excellence, she is always a lady in the truest sense ot the word. 0l 8lfU0l ln selecting the theme, we have en- 'b t to our deavored to pay a well-earned tri u e alma mater. Patient and understanding, he eased thestrain that a period of adiustment necessarily brings. Now with every depart- ment of our high school pulling together for the common good, there is, thanks to our superintendent, a happy combination of skilled direction and willing cooperation. To Mr. Cartwright belongs a rare administrative ability which his years of experience has developed richly. This ability is going far to make our Carlisle schools the best. We have great admiration for Mr. Cartwright's fine judgment and his keen interest in all of our school activities. His faithful service and his concern for our welfare have won the deepest respect of the Class of I948. 1 MR. JOHN THE DMI ISIR TIO S. Burkhart is familiar to all high school students. It is he who draws up our class schedules, keeps our records, and approves our absences from class. We see his careful planning behind every event on the high school calendar. The students have found him to have an interest in their activities, and they look upon Mr. Burkhart as a friend and adviser. Mr. Harold E. Hench is holding the position of acting assistant principal for the first time this year. All iunior high functions are supervised by Mr. Hench. He also helps with the Student Council. The Student Council, states Mr. Hench, should be a sounding board for school opinion, it should be able to arouse student interest and participation. The assistant principal plans all the guidance programs and is the guidance counsellor. These programs are helping to build the kind of citizens ,who will be a credit to C. H. S. MR HAROLD E. The resounding echoes of base hits, the enthusi- astic cheering of the fans, and the hoarse bawl of the umpire usher in the national pastime of baseball at Carlisle High School. First Meeting From the last mean touch of ol' man winter, to the opening of the first tiny crocus, spring appears in a variety of ways. To some the season of spring brings a pleasant, peaceful rest from the cruel ravages of winter. Others, who are not quite so senti- mental, think of spring in the form of BASEBALL. To these enthusiasts there is no other sport quite so thrilling as this all American game, and these en- thusiasts are quite willing to stand beneath a merci- less, boiling sun for the sheer pleasure of witnessing a . . . Austin GIRLS' SPURTS Girls' Sports this year reached a high peak, with the addition of Mrs. Cockley to the faculty. First, there was hockey, the first time it has been enioyed at C.H.S. Then, volleyball and basketball occupied our minds while snow was on the ground, but with the first hint of spring, we were out on the baseball diamond and tennis courts. Bowlirig was very popu- lar this year, and many girls were seen with archery equipment. All together, these sports made 1948 very attractive to sportsminded girls ,in C.H.S. Mr s. Bucher SENIUR lIlASS 0F-FICERS We look back, not with dismay but with joy, for when we recall the well worn memories of the past four years, it is as though we were turning the pages of a diary, a diary full of the happiness, ioys, and sorrows of high school. As freshmen we participated in various sports for which we became the proud owners of junior varsity letters. We saw our names on the honor rolls. Many of us were included in the A Cappella Choir, a great honor, indeed, for freshmen. By the time vile were sophomores, and officially considered pupils of the senior high school, many of us were fast becoming stars on the gridiron and the backetball court. Finally, iuniors! At last! We then realized our high school days were fast coming to a close-days which were full of happiness and nights joyous with football games, dances, parties, and capricious capers. A And now we are seniors. What the future holds for us we cannot tell, but we are prepared and ready to face any situation as we, the class of 1948, bring to a close some of our happiest days, days spent beneath the portals of Carlisle High School. Think ofthe Hi-Y dances held at the Carlisle Country Club. The Halloween party was sponsored by the French Club. Everyone came masked and in costume. Need it be said - a good time was had by all ? Not long after this the Library Club gave a tea for parents ofthe members and the high school teachers. Before we quite knew what was happen- ing Christmas was on us and we were caught in the gay whirl of holiday festivities, with the Girl Scout and Girl Reserve dances. ln January the dramatic club play, The Inher WilIy , was presented. Remember the French Club and Spanish Club dances sponsored by these clubs. We danced to the smooth orchestra music at the wonderful iunior prom held in May. Would it be possible to forget the French Club Variety Show and the Waterloo chorus line? May Day will be a day none of us forget as we picture our beautiful queen, the court of honor and the maypole dancers. And then - Our last fling before graduation -our class ride. Surely this is a day that will be long remembered. Finally came -our Baccalaureate service in June, followed by - Commencement. And now we are alumni, facing the world, but we can always look back, back to the days happily spent in the halls of C.H.S. BECKY DINGLE RONALD KERR Witnesses: LLOYD H. ARMITAGE FRED HOUCK Signed and attested April TO, 1948. QD D 83 CUMME CEMIE TDY Let us peek through the curtains of formality to glimpse at a picture of the informal life of some of our seniors on that fatal June 10, Commencement Day. In the wee hours of this memorable June morning - say about three a.m. - we find Nancy Clark typing away at her P. D. assignment due two weeks ago. She is mumbling, lt must be in by today. The small hand of the clock slowly moves down- ward to the figure five. The cock crows and Margaret Bradley rises stiffly from her bed to say the Lord's Prayer, salute the American fiag, and pass to her first period class. The sun slowly begins its ascension to the tuneful accompaniment of the whistling of three great fisher- men digging worms in the front of the school yard. Fred Houck, Ronald Kerr, and Bill Leib are expecting trout for breakfast, maybe? Seven o'clock and all's well. Whoops! We almost overlooked Janet Garber, Margie Shopp, and Blackie Adams ordering breakfast in bed. Some people get away with everything! Pardon me, but that couldn't be Fred Honomcin arguing with the milkman again. What a bargainer! lt's eight o'clock - Gruen Watch Time -tick tock. Peggy Jane Goodyear and Nancy Irwin descend the stairs paiama fashion for breakfast while Toatsie Robbins runs through a few morning ballet exercises. Harry Lackey, ll, begins his violin practice with gusto. Joan Kuntz dashes oFf the last headline for the Periscope, grabs her hat and Marilyn Lundy opens the door for her as she heads for the Sentinel building. 8:30 finds Ed Colquhoun hidden behind the morn- ing newspaper as Frank Scoppetti devours bowl after bowl of Wheaties. At 10, Flick Hair and Chase Maglin sigh over Pepsi-Colas after a vigorous set of tennis. Noontime and the call of Soup's on whets the appetite of many a sunbather like Delores Trimmer and Peggy Crooks. Those gals are acquiring the new summer look. Betty Naugle and Doris Dasher count their gradua- tion presents for the twentieth time. They both agree that maybe it was worth it after all. One P.M. finds Janie Kough and Margie Wynn re- tiring for that most important afternoon beauty nap. Jean Yoter and Paul Cline entertain themselves in ci game of badminton. What a beating that birdie's taking! 3:00 P.M. and we spy Joe McCullough under a spreading chestnut tree reading over the names of his favorite high school dates Cgirls of coursel for the last time. They'll miss you, too, Joe. Let us go once more down to the old swimming hole - Boiling Springs -to find Joan Bender helping Gene Shetter and Lynn Heishman perfect their swan dives. Could that be John Wardrip sitting on that log whittling away? ls it true, John, that you are carving your name on that plaque to be hung in the front hall of the high school, so that others may follow your example? 5:00 P. M. and Patty Stum is preparing a lovely supper, bean surprise. Jean Eastep models her cap and gown before an admiring host of relatives: explains that it just doesn't seem to fit right in the waist. 6:00 o'clock and Marilyn Vance writes out her last will and testament leaving everything to William Shakespeare and Mr. Hench. Latest news flash! Nancy Clark has just handed in the belated P.D. assignment and received an A for it. Can this be true? Marion Breu hums mysteriously to herself. I think something's brewing for tonight. 7:15 and Charles Kruger's Green Racer stops before dear old C. H. S. Twenty-five beautiful girls get out of the back seat. 7:30 and 151 daughters and sons of proud papas and mamas march sedately to the High School stage to receive the precious diplomas. P.S.: We almost didn't think Betty Shover would make it. She forgot her cap and gown and modestly consented to wear red flannels in the ceremony. THE GRADUATE Oh, ioy! Here it is June IOth and I am on the verge of graduating -I hope! I'm expecting an attack of measles, it's just my luck! I can hardly believe it fneither can my parentslj but here I am climbing into the somber black robe of a senior and perching that tricky cap at such an angle that the tassel stops tickling my nose! Gosh! This is the last time I will see the old building as a student. Much as I hate to admit it, there is a lump in my throat! Now why would I possibly miss Miss Derr and her French assignments? But I do! Now we're taking our places on the stage! Oh, fiddlesticks there goes that tassel again! Ah-choo! Oh, well! All in a lifetime! There they are-those little passports from childhood fplease, we are practically THE CARLISLE HIGH I wrote the song for our class day in l9l5, stated Raymond L. Keesecker when interviewed for the OracIe. There were four or five of us that year who entered into the contest being held in search of a class song. Some of the students wrote iust the words and put them to the tune of a song popular at that time, but I wrote both the words and music for my song. I also wrote, he continued, a class poem. Both the song and the poem were selected for class day, which was held in the Strand Opera House. Three or four years after I graduated my song came out as the Carlisle High School Song. None f 'X alumni- well, practicallyli into the uncertainty of the coming years. I can see me now, grinding away in college fmy parents simply insist I goll -who knows I may be famous some day! What? Oh, my diploma! Golly Ned! I must have been day-dreaming! I wish my hands didn't stage fright? At my knees would stop shaking, and feel so clammyl I wonder if I have last! the supreme moment! Mine all mine! Just think, for twelve years I've slaved away and only for a piece of paper! Now that it is all over I feel like crying! Pardon me while I sniFfIe in my hankie! What am I so glad about? It starts all over again in the fall when college opens! Oh, woe is me!!! STIHHUL ALMA MATER of the words had been changed except for the green and white. The school colors in T915 were blue and white. Ray Keesecker has been an accountant of C. H. Masland and Son for the past twenty-six years. He is also organist of the Evangelical Church. When asked what inspired him to write the song, Mr. Keesecker replied that he had always been in the habit of writing poetry throughout high school and so he decided to try his luck in the contest. Since then Raymond Keesecker has written hun- dreds of pieces of music and has also written a book of poetry entitled Gems From the Wayside. L of w C5 85 PTR Mr. and Mrs. A. Albert M.
