The Senior Class of Carlisle County High School Presents The 1970 COMET Volume XIII Carlisle County High School Bardwell, Kentucky Foreword The seventy years since the turn of the century have been an era of vast accomplishments and discoveries. The inventions of the car and airplane have improved transportation. Medical ac- complishments such as the discovery of penicillin and various vac- cines, have aided in the lengthening of the average life span. One hundred years ago one would not have even imagined organ transplants. In the past ten years, medical technology has de- veloped so as to not only allow transplants but to develop artificial organs. Can you imagine the stunned look on a person's face if someone had mentioned walking on the moon or smashing an atom? These have all become realities. The accomplishments of the past seventy years, however, will be far exceeded in the next ten years. Is it possible that humans will be inhabiting the moon? Will there be a service station in space? Will there be a woman as the leader of our nation? Will we be able to control nuclear fusion? There are many questions for which we are seeking answers by LIGHTING THE WAY THROUGH THE SEVENTIES! 2 Table of Contents TERRI e 0vei STAFF 5 ADMINISTRATION - FACULTY FRESHMEN................ His out- going personality has done much to build student morale. Although Mrs. Mathis, better known to us as Pat, has been here for only one year, she has become a favorite with everyone. Her warm, cheerful smile does much to brighten a visit to the office. We, the 1970 SeniorClass, would liketo dedicate thisedition of the COMET to the two people who have been our greatest help through this year. We gratefully name Burley and Pat Mathis as MR. and MRS. It is as if a silence fell Where bides the garnered sheaf, And voices murmuring, It is well, Are stifled by our grief. It is as if the gloom of night Had had a summer's day, And willows, sighing at their plight. Bent low beside the way. For he was part of all the best That Nature loves and gives, And evermore on Memory's breast He lies and laughs and lives. --Paul Laurence Dunbar JOSEPH HAYDEN THARP The Senior Class of 1970 was saddened by the loss of a valuable and faithful member. HERS I CL MIX Annual Staff Typists RUT HIE TERRY SUZANNE JACKSON REBA HARDY 167 EDITOR'S NOTE: Last year Carlisle County High School had the best annual which had ever been published by the school. This year the 1970 COMET STAFF isdcdicated to building an annual which is even better. Nine months of work have gone into the making of this annual. In all of these months each staff memberhasdevoted himself to the goal of making his section better than the year before. For many nights and afternoons, long hours were spent at the school cropping and measuring pictures, figuring ratios, thinking of new and better ideas and just doing hard work on the annual. On behalf of the staff, we would like to thank our principal and all those kind and understanding teachers who put up with all our excuses to work on this annual. Without their cooperation, this yearbook would never have been finished. We would also like to thank the student body for their assistance throughout this school year. We sincerely hope that the pleasure you get from viewing this edition of the COMET will match the heartfelt work put into the 1970 COMET. 168
