We tall 120 of usl elected .loe Formea president, Bob Taylor vice-president, Shirley Kessinger secretary, and lloris liaab treasurer. Our County Queen float, won second prize in the annual parade. As juniors, though we had shrunk in number to 104, we became one of the most active classes in school. Our president, vice-president, secre- tary, and treasurer were .loe Formea. Bob Taylo1', Shirley Hope, and Pat Neighbors. Under Mr. ltossetti, we staged a magazine sales drive which cleared enough money to let us give the seniors a banquet in addition to the prom, the theme of which was Let's Take an Old-Fashioned Walk. The junior play, Our Miss Brooks, was enjoyed by all who saw it, as well as those taking part. Page Twenty-two Studious seniors. They went that way! Smear 'em up! SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Verna. P. Darlene Arler CLASS OF 19.. 3 The class of '53 started the freshman year EIT strong, but has since then drop- ped to 72. This year, one of our most im- portant years of high school, everyone was very careful to help choose the class officers who would best help the class and bring them out on top at the end of the year. The officers that were elected are president, Bill Schuetzeg vice-presi- dent, Glenn Jennings: secretary, Evelyn Rhoads, and treasurer, Darlene Arter. The council members elected were Myron Glenn, Carole Parsons, and Pete Denhy. Bernice Borman was a hold-over from our sophomore year. The first of our many major activities this year was the Magazine Sale. This was undertaken so we would be able to have the best ban- quet and prom that has ever been held at C. U. H. S. Evelyn Rhoads led the sales with a total of 35275 and the ten who sold the most subscriptions were pre- sented with a steak dinner. Page Thirty A team??? Jed Jones Just Plain Lum.' 'way back last September, they were just as curious as to what high school held in store for them as they were undecided as to what might happen to them at the hands of the mighty seniors. They soon found out that the stories they had heard about the seniors were just a big bluff and soon the freshmen were ready to take their places-just as big as the next guy. On opening day there were 89 freshmen ready and Waiting to see what high school was like. Not long after school opened, all classes held election of officers and student council members. The class officers were Bernard Cerar, president: Jon Eldred, vice-presidentg Donna Ricchi- ardi, secretaryg and Gayle Frame, treasurer. The representatives to the student council were Patricia Shirley, elected for a period of two years, and Arlene Kramer, .lane McCollom, and Carolyn Konneker, all elected for one year. These officials have served very capably in their respective capacities. Page Thirty-eight We entered a float in the Hallow- eten parade, the theme of which was a haunted cornfield with various members of the c-lass dressed as ghosts, a witch, and a black cat. This float came in fourth in the judg- ing. On .lanuary 18, the class sold a variety of refreshments at the bas- ketball game, the proveeds going to cover the cost of the float and to add to funds i11 our treasury. When semester exam time rolled around, the freshmen were again in a dither wondering just what high school semesters were like. When they re- ceived the reassuring comments of upper classmen that exams werenlt too hard they felt better. With the able help of our c-lass sponsors, Miss Kasten, Mr. Davis, a11d Mr. Stivers, we freshmen think it's been quite a year and can only hope for as good luck in the future. Our record was one win and eight losses. Coach Sti- vers was really experiencing a team for next year because of the good prospects. Seniors were .Ioe Forniea, our very capable captain: Bob Tay- lor, fullbackg Gene Featherstone, guard: Art Konneker, halfbackg .lini Leach, guard: Ronnie Rathke, endg .liln Meno, tackle. The prospects for next year are very good since a lot of the underclass boys got some all important experience. The top junior prospects are Barry Konneker, full- back: .Jerry Wynn, halfbackg Frank Meyers, tackleg Bob Birk, guard. The seniors of next year have Dick Mar- tin, quarterback: Pete llenby and Bill Schuetze, ends: Melvin Brown, guard, and .lim Haynes, defensive specialist. The high men in the hitting department were Bob Meyers .444 and Gene Hunt 243. The outstanding features of the season were Bolfs hitting and Dick Davenport's pitching. Dick Da- venport had an earned run average of .30 per inning. In 26 innings Dick had 359 strikeouts alld 18 walks to his credit. Bob Bell had 17 strike- outs and 8 walks in 16 innings. The won and lost record was 2-10. This is not very impressive, but the team showed promise and should do bet- ter this year. Bliss Mavic c-hose the varsity six plus the subs for the biggest game of the season whit-h was the C.ll.S. girls vs, Blat-kburn girls. This was the first time the girls had play- ed an out-of-sc-hool team. Miss Mack and the girls did exercises-one, two, three, s-t-r'-e-t-c-hl Volley ball is a game that improves with time. After playing the game for four years enough girls have ac- quired enough skill so that we get a few exciting games. The girls don't put much into volley ball because they are looking back on the great basketball season and looking for- ward to when they can get outside for the sunshine and baseball. The highlight of this sport last year was the game played between the teach- ers and the students, which included water boys and all. In the last sport of the year, the girls, like the boys, renewed their skill in swinging the bat and catching the ball for a short but hard season of baseball. The classes chose teams and played each other in games. There were several intra-mural games. Between sports the girls did exercises, played games W.. on little carts, and danced. Girls' sports in our school are improving due to the increasing co-operation of students and faculty and to our won- derful teacher, Miss Mack. All in all this has been another great year for the girls. Page Fifty-eight Each year the Senior Class of Carlinville High School takes on the responsibility of editing the Carlin Hi. Since this is a big undertaking each member of the Sen- ior class is given the opportunity to help. There is much time and work put on this book, but it also provides a great deal of interest and information for the people who work on it. Since each senior class publishes the Carlin Hi it causes each class to work hard trying to develop high standards in order to better the annual of the preceding year. The Class of 1952 was no exception. The staff, under the guidance of Mrs. Chapman, their sponsor, and Shirley Hope, this year's editor, hope they have achieved these standards. The 1952 Carlin Hi is the sixth consecutive yearbook of Carlinville High School. The name, Carlin Hi, which is short for Car- linville High School, was selected the first year the school had a yearbook by the Carlin Hi staff. Each year the staff mem- bers try to discover something to make their publication an outstanding one. This year they chose The Sweethearts of Carlin Hi as a surprise feature. The members of the staff nominated six boys and six girls. From these one boy and one girl were to be elected the HSweet- hearts of Carlin Hin by the purchasers of the book. THE CAVALIER Page Sixty FOR '52 Copy Editor, Nancy Denby Miss Nutt fsponsorj Editor-in-Chief, Carol Novak The Cavalier, since its birth in 1945, has grown steadily with each year. 1951-52 has been no exception. This year, under a new plan, the staff was headed by three editors instead of two, as there were in the past. The work of the Editor-in-Chief, Carol Novak, was to plan the content of the whole paper, assign certain reporters to write the news, preside over staff meet- ings, a11d write editorials. The Copy Edi- tor, Nancy Denby, was responsible for checking all copy turned in by the re- porters, correcting spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc., and composing headlines for the articles in the paper. The job of the Make-up-Editor, Mary Lou Link, was to arrange the dummy copy and to oversee the typing of the stencils and the mimeographing of the paper. The new plan has worked out well, and it will probably be continued. However, it takes more than editors to put out a paper, there must also be a good staff. The Ca- valier had one this year! Yes, the news reporters, the columnists, the feature writers, the typists, the cartoonists, the minieographers, the make-up crew, the salesmen-all these people worked hard to make 15151-52 a good year for the Ca- valier, and they succeeded: but far less would have been accomplished if it had not been for our two patient, l1ard-work- ing advisors, Miss Eldred and Miss Nutt. Our thanks to them! CAVALIER STAFF GETS THE EWS lmll In rlglml, lluw I: Xll'HllIl2l XUISLIIINJVS. Azuwy livnlny. Vzlml Auvuk.
