This was done so that an account of it might be included in this year's CARLIN HI. The cast worked under the capable direction of Miss Mack. Tish was the first high school play Miss Mack had directed. The cast rehearsed faithfully, putting everything they had into it in order to make it a. ineniorable play not only for tllelnselves but for the Whole class of '51, AUNT TISH AND HER FAMILY AT WORK a a . The band has added a lot of color to our home football games, and CAVALIER AND HIS HORSE occasionally has taken part in our pep meetings to back up the team. Among many other activi- ties in which the band has taken part are con- certs, parades, and the Spotlight Minstrel. For the fourth time the group traveled to the Illinois State Fair, and for the fourth time receivedafirst place trophy. The marching band this year fea- tured our own Cavalier, Larry Thorpe in costume, mounted on his white horse. Under the direction of Mr. Reid, Miss Kibler, and Miss Mack, the Spotlight Minstrel of 1950 proved a great success. Many specialties including Vocal selections, dance routines, and humorous reading brought forth the talent of the music department. Everyone connected with the minstrel worked very hard to make the third Spotlight Minstrel a long-remembered one. Carlin-I-Ii Staff The staff oi the CARLIN HI has had to set a high goal for this yea1 s edition since last yea1 s staff kept to such high standards. The class of 1951 has been able to meet these standards under the guidance of their sponsor, Mrs. Chap- 111311, and their co-editors, Judith Kon- neker and Shirley Mitchell. Since this is a senior class project, there are oppor- tunities open to all class nienibers to help. Each has a chance to contribute something to the CARLIN HI, making it a combination of many different views and ideas, The name, CARLIN HI, was chosen by popular vote from a list of names submitted about five years ago to the first CARLIN HI editors and their staff. Each year the staff members try to dis- cover a new exciting scheme or theme to make their edition outstanding. The CARLIN HI takes events from the firstpof the school year to the very last and combines them as interestingly and as tactfnlly as is at all possible to do into one volume for the school body. This takes much time and effort. but it also provides a great deal of interest and information for the people doing it. The Council has made other plans and has started many other activities for the better- ment of the school. Latin Club The Forum Romanum Club fLatin Clubj was organized in 1948 under the direction of Miss Stoddard. The club motto is Non Sibi sed omnibus CNot for self but for alll. It meets about every six weeks. One of the projects this year was to make a Roman house, which has been completed. The meetings are divided into two parts. The first part is educational, dealing with the study of Latin Classicsg the second, the recreation part, consists of playing games, singing songs, and presenting playlets. Refresh- ments are served at the end of each meeting by committees appointed especially for that purpose. l Library Club The Library Club consists of nine girls and their sponsor, Mrs. Chapman. Each girl has an hour in the library checking books. The girls also keep the library arranged and see that the magazines and newspapers are kept in order. Each girl has a special assignment of her own during the year. The girls answer many questions students may ask about .checking out books, the card catalog, and using' the dictionaries or other reference books. Meetings are held about every six weeks. The girls are Marian Haynes Cseatedl, Betty I-Ioxsey, Norma Monetti, Sue Paynter, Lucy Libro, Edna Pursey, Nancy Mayberry, Joyce Bouillon, and Mary Schoeberle. Pep Club The Pep Club was organized in 1949. The mem- bers of the Pep Club usually hold their meetings at 8:40 on the mornings of game days. The first year the members wore red and blue beanies, and this year they have added 40 Carlin-Hi sweat shirts. The Pep Club, which includes the cheer- leaders, goes to the games and backs the team with its cheers. There is a special section at the home games marked off for the club. The Pep Club is sponsored by Miss Mary Mack. The pic- ture shows members of the club cheering the team on during the second game this fall. The intramural games started under the instruction of Miss Wlieelei' in 1947: however, they were discon- tinued in 1948. VVhen Miss Mack came to Car- linville, the intramurals were started again. PUSH-H-H, SHIRLEY! Girls' Sports The activities which are offered to the girls in the physical education classes consist of three major sports: basketball, volleyball, and softball. Each year the program is varied by the introduction of new and different activi- ties. This year soccer was replaced by touch football, and tumbling by low organized games, which were played on Gym scooters. Also in- cluded in the program was a unit on dance. The main purpose was to meet the needs and interests of those girls so inclined. They were made available to all the girls in high school. There are now sixty girls participating. All the girls wish to thank Miss Mack for using her spare time for their interests. MAKE IT A HOMER! if as Page Fifty-two GET THAT JUMP! STRETCH A LITTLE MORE! Senior class officers, left to right: Keith Mefford fvice presidentl, Alice Ann Justice ftreasurerj, Gene Hunt fpresidentj, and Mary Ruth Clardy Csecretaryl. Class of 1951 We of the Class of 1951 entered C.C.H.S. with an enrollment of an even one hundred. As freshmen-, we were deluged with textbooks, schedule cards, and upper classmen, but aided by our big brothers and sisters, we managed to survive the dreaded green days of our freshman year. Our sopho- more year was fairly uneventful except for our float, Cotton Blossom, which won third place in the I-Ial1owe'en parade, and the fact that we gave our second all school dance. The upper- classmen were too busy with their own problems and those of the freshmen to notice the sopho- mores, so we escaped into our junior year. Dur- ing this year we presented our first play, The Brain Storm, and gave our Junior-Senior Prom, based on the theme, -'fStairway to the Stars. Page Sixty-two Our senior year has been kept busy with our CARLIN HI, the newspaper, buying rings and in- vitations, and all of the things that go with being a senior. Of course, there was Tisl1, our senior play, always one of the biggest moments in a senior's year. We were the first class to buy rings with the new Cavalier crest adopted by the student body last spring. As we leave Carlin- ville Community High School, we are a little less than the one hundred with which we started, but the '70 that remain are superior people. Our teachers must have been disappointed in us many times, but never once did they show it, and through their efforts we manage to leave C.C.H.S. with many fond memories and a different out- look on life in general. They sold magazines to earn money for their class activities, one of which was tl1e junior float in the I-Iallowe'en parade fthe theme taken from the popular song, Good Night, Irene J. The most important events of the year were the junior play and, of course, the prom where they spent their time and money on one grand affair. The sophomore class with its sponsors, Miss I-Ioehn, Miss Stemmons, and Mr. Hageman-has been a great hit in C.C.H.S. This class of Just the In-betweenst' has been well represented in all Page Seventy . fields: football, basketball, chorus, and anything that came their way. Their Hal1owe'en float this year represented a pirate ship and won them a prize. Despite having been here such a short time, the sophomores have participated in their share of school activities. When the class of '54 entered C.C.H.S., new life, happiness, vigor, and vim were added to the school. With Miss Kasten, Mr. Davis, and Mr. Stivers as their sponsors, the freshmen have been quite active in school affairs. In October the class contributed to the Hallow- e'en parade a float with the theme, We Will Cook Gi1lespie's Goose. Yes, C.C.H.S. is proud of its freshmen who have good school spirit, and good attitudes, and who are ardently seeking knowledge.
