N1 W I N , W. , Corlefon College Northfield, Minnesoto Algol 1968 Dk H I We have tried to make of this book a work which demonstrates as well as describes the range of activities going on at Carleton in 1967-1968. As such, we have come nowhere close to comprehen- siveness, but we do hope that in this Algol we have recreated something of the spirit ot a protected and protective institution slowly coming to grips with the implications of its isolation. The Editors HAUTBOY AND LUTE Behold the fellow sitting down: Pipe tyrly, pipe tyrlow He plays his hautboy all alone Corinna mine, Come sit by me! With knitted brow and puckered lip, What is't, sweet love, Why wan and mute? He puffs his cheeks out, trowns a bit. Nor tyrly, nor tyrlow. Shall boot, alas, this wooden beau. Suppose a strolling troubadour Sing fan frere leyrere lan Who sings for tuppens at your door. Corinna, dear, Come trip for me! A genius near his pleasant string My love, she tunes A-merrily! Wakes birds in woods and bids them sing. Such subtle nonsense numbers are Your fan frere leyrere lan, For love and music come of them. K raiiffcg -,Zu , the black problem the white problem racial attitudes in a year of crisis NAC Spokesmen Judy Brown and Sue Compton tell it like it is . . . lmported speakers add their views . . . block Black Carleton students formed the Ne- gro Affairs Committee in response to their negative feelings toward the aca- demic and social atmosphere here. Al- though social problems required our at- tention, NAC first chose to direct its ac- tivities toward changing the academic structure of the college. For black stu- dents Carleton was stagnating in an in- tellectual morass. The curriculum reflected virtually no relevance to this society whose most pressing domestic issue is race. Nothing in the curriculum related to the black students who have accepted the philosophy of black power. NAC sought to open discussion and initiate a deeper sense of involvement with an issue that is revolutionary. NAC wanted to create a conscious awareness that the consequences of black power will alter the traditional fabric of this society. We wanted to remove the college from its self-inflicted isolation. We wanted to establish a ground of confrontation be- tween black and white students. We want- ed the college community to recognize us not as black WASPS but as black blacks. Mainly we wanted to expose the covert racial preiuclices of white liberals who had helped keep Carleton oblivious of the new philosophy behind the race problem. In October NAC sponsored two pro- grams that initiated active discourse be- tween black and white students. At the first meeting a black speaker, Ernie Cham- bers, made it explicitly clear that black people were demanding both their human and civil rights. Mr. Chambers' remarks were the proper stimulant for the kind of discussion that followed. White stu- dents felt that black students did not iden- tify with the masses of black people. They felt that here race preiudice was non-exis- tent. Vociferously the black students de- nied these misconceptions. White students began to realize that coming to Carleton did not make us colorless. Instead, being at Carleton emphasized the color of our skins. All of the emotions, all of the ideas' about race and black power came with us, and we simply cannot divorce our- selves from our beliefs and viewpoints by white Of course I was concerned about the race problem! Few weren't. But, I had my own problems too. The Negro problem was iust that-a problem for Negroes. Black Nationalists said black people had to do things Themselves and I agreed. I vowed to do my best not to interfere while Negroes solved their problems. I had some friends who were Negroes and I tried to treat them as I did all my other friends even Though something always seemed uneasy. Though my friends never mentioned race problems I spoke in favor of policies which would reduce discrimi- nation, for their sake as well as to uphold some beliefs my parents had indoctrinat- ed me with. After all, weren't all people alike regardless of race, color, or creed? Shouldn't all have freedom? Then came NAC. My smug liberalism was quickly destroyed by the series of questions I was forced to confront. What White Problem? I thought it was a Black Problem. Why should I be responsible for injustices caused by other whites? So what if I'm white? That doesn't matter. I'm an individual human being before I'm a member of a race and I try to treat everyone else that way. What do you mean, That's too bad? Shouldn't I try to treat everyone equally? Why do you say that everyone is not equal? Blacks don't want to be treated like whites? How can you say that? For years civil rights leaders have been say- ing, All men are born equal. They are born equal but don't stay equal? What the hell does that mean? Oh, I see. You must be talking about the places where discrimination is still more real than freedom. But the govern- ment will take care of that in a few years by passing the right laws. It's certainly not my concern. OK already. If you don't hink I can see beyond the end of my nose, tell me how I can. My concern hould be the White Problem? If you Some whites take it sitting down . Others rise to meet the challenge lp I block becoming Carleton students. That nigt white students began to realize that black person is always consciously awar he is a black person wherever he is. This gathering still did not alter man- liberal misconceptions that race preiudic does not exist at Carleton. NAC knew thi and we next challenged the white liberal to prove their liberality. Although som whites realized they had to assume th role of followers in the black movemenj the repercussions of that meeting well more revealing than the actual event: White students let us know that they di not like the solidarity NAC members ha that night. They were having their fir experience with black people who hav realized a new sense of unity. Their ri- action was indicative of nationwide whit response to nationwide black unity. Tk white students did not want to listen t statements of race pride and predictio of a racial civil war in this country. N had succeeded in exposing the negati which reaction to black solidarity. N proved that everything that happen was a reflection of nationwide sentime on both sides, of the race problem. T campus is not isolated, and to say that is is only to believe a lie. Since NAC was formed the acade situation has already changed. Some p fessors have made a conscious effort mention a'particular phase of Negro l in this country that is relevant to course. In terms to come, special disc sion groups will be established with emphasis on one particular topic. Th are also plans in the making which geared toward expanding the subiect terial in courses so that they will refl a greater relevance to an important of this society. These plans, howe must still be seen to their fruition. lde the members of NAC would like to the sub-cultural significance of black p ple given adequate and unbiased ex ure in the courses that can best be ad ed to serve this function. It is easy for me to say that these demic changes should occur solely cause l am black. However, there is m iustification that the Negro sub-culture white will tell me what that is, it will at least be a start. Yes, of course it is white people who have forced Negroes into their unfortu- nate position. That's obvious. But it isn't my fault. And anyhow, isn't freedom enough? Can't a free black man achieve as much as a white if he is given equal opportunity? No? Why not? I think I see now. It's like holding some- one back for the first hundred yards of amile race and then saying, You're free now. Hurry and catch up. That might even start to explain the motivation prob- lems you talk about. I don't think l'd even try to run the race. The Negro needs to catch up economi- cally and politically as well as socially then. And it one white has restrained, two must help in order to make up for lost time. When I finally decided that I had an obligation, WAC came into existence and ways to help as well as new perspectives soon arose. lt didn't take many discussions for me to discover that I was preiudiced in many ways towards Negroes. Some of this prejudice proved foolish, while some of it turned out to be iustifiable general- ization which provided a way for me to begin to know my Black friends as Ne- groes instead of whites with dark skin. People talked about Afro-American history and understanding began to grow. I still have reservations about classify- ing a person in any distinct group until I know him personally. But I began to see that it is hard and foolish to pretend not to notice what color a person is, so maybe the best approach is to make my miscon- ceptions as accurate as possible, and my preiudgments as minimal as possible. I participated in the NAC-WAC Christ- mas Recruiting Program and found myself feeling useful but very uneasy and out of place in a Negro high school. Just be- cause mine was the only white face. A I A.- f,'.' Y . f lt will have to extend in- to the community-the problem overlaps. The one meeting I went to didn't change my atti- tude. Personal Contact works better than convos. Ei g irl .- Y 'hb' M il A 'i l ll I at ' r tev. , 1 I think mainly they opened the atmos- phere for discussion. l've heard of WAC but not of any work it's done. l didn't think I was a preiudiced person, but l am. The most important thing they can do is make stu- dents aware. 'PQan-' They got fired at the wrong time. block integrated in Carleton than the mere fact that l would feel better if it were included in the curriculum. For the white students who are oblivious to the fact that a dis- tinct Negro sub-culture exists, such in- formation would be invaluable. This knowledge would be most beneficial to any white person who wants to under- stand the philosophy of black power. Once they know the reasons for the de- velopment of such a philosophy, they will gradually begin to know that black power has some meaning for them. Black power essentially means that minority groups, people who have small voices, will be able to have a say in the manner in which they are governed. There are few who disagree that this society needs to under- go some basic changes in its structure. Black power advocates are determined to effect some of these changes for them- selves. With a background understanding of what black power is and what its aims are, white people will begin to realize that they too are victims of an oppressive society. A democratic America is an illu- sion. Black people have known this for a long time. If white people are willing to accept as stark reality the situation of black people in this country that is now being presented in classes and which will be expanded in future courses, they will begin to wake themselves from this dream. They will discover that the illu- sion does exist. When ln White America was pre- sented at convo, the whole spectrum of the black man's experience in this coun- try was traversed in two hours. The im- pact of emotion, hopes and fears were compacted to stir the audience into not only knowing but feeling what black men feel. Until white people can feel that the cry of black power is the cry of oppressed people whom they have oppressed, there will always be racial tension andudisorder. As it was so aptly expressed in In White America, black people are trying to impress the moral and ethical con- science of a people who do not want to listen, of a people who refuse to hear. This is the Negro problem. -J U DY B ROWN white few months ago I would have tried to ig- nore and forget the experience. Now it is a valuable memory that has helped to lead me to a new and concerned igno- rance. The effect NAC and WAC have had on this campus is amazing. At one time I be- lieved that attitudes couldn't be changed. Just looking back over this one year forces me to change that opinion. Attitudes have changed. NAC' and WAC may be forgot- ten as groups, but their achievement will remain. They have created genuine con- cern in a social problem other than book- ing. That's an accomplishment. Many Carls have become directly in- volved with the problems and have worked and learned. The greatest effect of the groups has, however, probably been on those who still aren't directly concerned. In September one could find Carls who felt no obligation to try to un- derstand race problems. Concern, for some, was limited to getting enough cops in the slums who aren't afraid to shoot. But a change has. taken place. Mere opinion is not now as common as it was and people seem to feel a new ob- ligation to attempt to know and under- stand before they iudge. In some miracu- lous way there has been a change of at- titude. One can hope that this attitude will develop into some kind of permanent ob- ligation. Rosy stories told of the futures that await Carls after graduation have become cliches. But Carls do become leaders. If the sense of obligation remains, then soft articulate voices from positions of re- sponsibility will be heard for years wher- ever Carls go, challenging excited opin- ion and perverse dogmatism with a hope- ful ignorance that forces people to at least try to understand. Carleton College is healthier as a result of NAC and WAC. I for one hope that this health will spread like a plague. R.N. The college campuses have to take action. The question is now of focusing on definite prob- lems. lr I Two little committees may be inadequate for the problem. The awareness may be a little late com- ing to Carleton. I think they're great.
