In full regalia of the Royal Stewart Tarten and under the direction of Sgt. Kenneth W. Miller, the Scots Band played a series of traditional highland marching and battle songs. It was noted that this is the oldest in origin of the three existant army pipe bands. Incidently, Gerald Hutchinson, a former Schurz graduate, 1950, was among the pipers. For the rirst time the entire department, consisting of the Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced Intermediate, R.O.T.C., Dance and Concert Bands participated together in one program. Combined in a massed band and led by Capt. Clay I-Iarvey, the program began with an impressive march. Next were the Advanced and Intermediate Bands directed by student conductors, Peter Herr, Lloyd jones, Scott Meland, and james Skomer. Concluding the pro- gram was a novelty put together by band mem- bers and entitled, Little Bop Riding Hood. A grand suCCess. 120 The Seven Last Words Easter lilies and reverend voices are the traditional accompaniments to the solemnity of the Seven Last Words. This Lenten program is presented by the Schurz Solo and Senior Chorus directed by Mr. Arthur Clark. The Schurz Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mr. Bernard Fisher and Miss Lillian Arnesen at the organ provided the fine music for this event. Each year those who wish to hear, in scripture and music, the words of our Lord attend this event on Palm Sunday. 121 Canter Right: Pete Cutatlis, Drive Al' fcnict' Lt-Ii: Ken licltoii, I.l'l' H.lrilt, Lower Lclt: Dunbar Gaim Lowe.-r Right: Mnrslizlll Gziinc. Gridclers Enter Semi-Finals The Bulldog gridmen under Coaches Fred O'Keefe and Dick Fee came through once more as a winning unit. In pre-season tilts the hope of the team was up and down. The Bulldogs romped to an easy victory over Senn 40 to 0, but were then stopped by those Taft Eagles. At the start of the league games, the hardfighting men of the varsity gave us a last minute vicory over Harrison and a couple of luck breaks enabled us to beat Lane 6 to 0. Steinmetz handed us or first defeat in league play and Austin was the only team able to hold our Bulldogs scoreless in league play. After reaching the city play-offs the Bulldogs walked over Marshall and beat Dunbar 21 to 6. vln a ,semi-final game against Calumet the Bulldogs played brilliantly only to bow 13 to O, thus ending a fairly successful season at Schurz, llppcr Right: jziik liunscn, George Twzir, Run 'l'rytL'k. icrgoii, Don Smlzncr. With Roger jenne, Wall Mortenson, and Al Rudinn gone ,the cagers had trouble hnding able replacements. The Bulldogs had a hne nucleus but not enough to win the necessary games. However one bright spot on the team was Ron Trieb, star senior center, who poured over 300 points with his high games being 59 points, against Sullivan. The Frosh-Soph team of 195m tied for North Section with a record of 7 wins against.2 losses. The Bull-Pups reached the semi-finals before being beaten by Hirsch.
