ei tron They contnbuted drawrngs and sketches and from these rdeas Mr Brand dre th f the mural was taken w e mal pattern from whrch Then the work began rn earnest Under the lnstructron and gurdance of Mrss Katherrne Schmrdt a Mural Pamtrng class was organrzed Here students learned frgure tech nlque and orl study As they learned they became more profrcrent and better prepared to undertake the great task that lay before them Mxss Schmrdt always ready and wrllrng gave her trme not only to mstruct the students but also to add her share to the work Beams were erected to form a scaffold and on thrs a makeshrft platform was elevated Here the actual mural work was done The panorama was sketched rn charcoal then parnted rn orls The deft hands of Mr Brand put lrfe mto the laborers bodres strength and purpose mto the burldmgs and expressron mto the faces of the men and women The executron of the mural was at all trmes under the supervtsron of Mr Brand It was he who decrded that an complement to the four huge murals rn each corner of the cerlrng of the lrhrary whrch depict the Development of the Wrrtten Word To Mr Brand the greater part of the honor rs due Desprte the fact that he rs nearmg hrs erghtteth year Mr Brand strll remams young rn heart and mrnd The murals that he has completed have garned country wrde fame and here rn Chxcago after travelrng all over the world Mr Brand has found hrs adopted home Hrs great love for Chrcago behalf, and thls Mr Brand has done The mural wrll forever remaln as cr symbol of the great love of a man for hrs crty other mural should be made as a prompted hrm to pamt a great mural rn rts Clarlce Crarg Class ot June 1941
