Dr. Henry chats with Mr. Sandburg a few minutes before the dedication program. I'm on the Illinois prairie. I'm glad to be so near a cornfield and a red barn. I am a child of time. As his knowledge increases, his opinions change-- for the better. Dedicated to this idea of in- creasing knowledge and thus removing undesirable prejudices, this changer, the teacher, may always make the same pertinent statement: Here to my rooms will come fresh generations one after another, gazing out on the world in history, gazing in on themselves in reverie, some asking the ancient questions, 'While we live what is worth looking at, what is worth listening to, and what might be Worth dying for? F In the first of the Sweetheart Ball pictures BELOW Betty Blewett serves punch to Marge Mc Mahon, Don Mack, Judy Kral, and George Hodges, Senior Class President, 5 who QCENTERJ crowns Junior Gerry Hately Queen, Her escort Junior Ron Weingartner, ' also receives honor as king. Other class candidates are Seniors Marilyn Hohensnein and Tom Lonson, Sophomores Jo Aulwurm and Dick Schmaedeke, and Freshmen Lila Baker and Bernie Partoll. Besides polishing social manners, Seniors KEXTREME BOTTOMJ realize more than ever that they must prepare specifically for one major occupational field, For many the desire to go to college means Senior English QLEFTQ with Judy Kral, Margie Budding, Ernie Kanak, and Pauline Rogowski. It is these roars, broken only by the minutest pause before the goal is achiev- ed-- it is these roars, and the people be- hind them which encourage our teams to dedicate themselves to victory. ii' gxgxlillii- -in X mit,- The first roars echoing in the gym are heard during the dedication when a thunderous ovation greets Carl Sandburg. Pep assemblies have a familiar sound, the encouraging cheers by enthus- iastic students. Then come the yells, greeting and sustaining the basketball and wrestling teams. ma d ardify wina omecoming game f4-0 After losing six straight games, the varsity broke SEASONS RECORD their losing streak against Lincolnway but then lost again in the final game to Rich. EAGLES The opening game was lost to I. C. , 31-2, with .Tay M0r1OCk scoring the two points. The Eagles were Z I' C' Elmhurst 31 hampered by the loss of Blaha and Kaehr. The boys not only lost the game but also the services of Golias. Moving on the Morgan Park, the Eagles displayed a tough line on the ground, but in the air the defense was weak and the Big Red used this to their advantage. Final score was l3-2 with Sandburg's points coming on a block kick by Lonson. At Bremen, failing to score on several opportunities, the team was smothered 33-0. Returning home the Eagles won their first game against Lincolnway, adding to the homecoming festivities. Berryman and Lonson scored the touchdowns as Sandburg romped to a 14-0 victory. The season's last game brought Rich three TD's. Lonson's 30 yard pass to Whennen was good for the TD to bring the final score, Rich 21, Sandburg 7. Fans will remember Tom Lonson varsity captain, who was on the All- Southwest Suburban Team, Red Willeford, who played almost every line positiong inexperienced Dave Busch, who developed into a good line -backer, Speedy Paul Whennen and Dave Vance. All will be remembered as teammates on Sandburg's first varsity squad even though costly fumbles and lack of experience added to lack of depth al all positions produced a 7 loss and 1 win record.
