The Climb To Success In the fall of 1953, a crew of nineteen, willing and fearless freshmen, began their climb up the mountain of success. They had their ideas and enthusiasm set for the top, and with their guide Mr. Jones, they began. They were, Karen Rathman, Jim Sorensen, Jim Woitazewski, Betty Caswell, Wayne Johnson, Betty Spiehs, Kent Powers, Larry Spotanski, Shirley Stoeger, Leona Schweitzer, Elda Schweitzer, Laberta Schweitzer, Sharon Hendrickson, Jerry Johnson, Sam Reed, Ray Stutzman, Jo Ann Runge, Virginia Swanson, and Donald Hadenfeldt. With much ability and will power, they did exceptionally well and reached the mountain's first plateau, during that year. After a short rest in 1954, with Mr. Hagan as their guide, they began on up toward the top. A short way up, three members, Sharon Hendrickson, Jim Woit. , and Jo Ann Runge, took air sick and hooked a passing plane for other mountains. They progressed rapidly, and another member, Ray Stutzman, couldn't stand the altitude and so he parachuted to safety and found work. Closer to the end of the second plateau, Bonnie Giffen and John Holley came floating in and joined the crew, and.then they ventured on, never looking back. They reached the second plateau soon and a new leader. Miss Johnson took charge of the Crew. Just as they began a new member, Bub Worman, dropped in and helped carry the load of the third year on the mountain. They soon stopped on a ledge to get some capital for their supplies, by giving the play, If Mother Only Knew, which was a great success. While there, they gave the Junior and Senior Banquet, which also was a success. As they ventured on Larry Spotanski, and Bud Worman sighted mountains in the distance and left the crew to try them. They soon reached their 3jrd and final height before the top and with Mr. Colman as their guide they started toward the final goal. As they neared the top, John Holley left them and ventured to a different mountain. Just in the last few feet they stopped to give the play, Yours Truly Willie,” which inspired them on. In the spring of 1957, they reached their goal, and received honors for courage and ability in life's most honored mountains, The Mountain of Success. 16 Compliments Of CAIRO CAR CLINIC CAFE

Class Prophecy Lt. Sam Reed had just returned from Europe where he had spent five years in the N.A.T.O. forces. At the airport to meet him was his wife, Carol and a former classmate and friend, Jim Sorensen. I, Jim Sorensen, a sportswriter for the Los Angeles Tribune was in N. Y. t- cover a championship fight. After arriving I had heard about Lt. Reed's return and decided to see him. While visiting with Sam at his apartment I told him why I had come to N. Y. While talking we decided to take a pleasure trip through the U. S. and look up former classmates. After I had finished my business, we attended the Arthur Godfrey show one morning. Appearing as the singing star was Betty Caswell, a very popular personality in New York City. Besides being very popular in N. Y., she also had hit records all over the rest of the country. After having a nice visit with Betty, we flew to Yale U. where we had heard that Kent Powers was attending school. After we had arrived, we were surprised to find out that Kent was in a hospital. While visiting with him he told us what had happened. While in the lab trying to discover a new medicine his experiment had blown up in his face and almost completely demolished the lab. When we left he was progressing very satisfactorily from his injury. Detroit was our next stop and here we visited the former Virginia Swanson, who was now married to the famous band leader, Jimmy Adams. While there, we attended his show and had a nice visit with him and Virginia. From Detroit we went down to Chicago, where we visited with Elda Schweitzer, who was now secretary to the Governor of Illinois, Mr. Larry Spotanski. We then flew on to Omaha. In Omaha after reading the paper, we decided to attend the big football game that night between, Omaha U. and Nebraska Wesleyan U. The opposing coaches were very familiar to us; our former coach at Cairo, Louis Hagan was now coach at Omaha U. and Wayne Johnson was now coach at Nebraska Wesleyan U. We had a nice visit with both of them and their families after the game. Incidentally the game for the league championship ended in a tie 14-14. We had heard that Laberta Schweitzer Wfis now a teacher at the University in Lincoln. We stopped in Lincoln and had a nice visit with her at her home on the campus grounds. From Lincoln we decided to go to Grand Island to see how the city had grown. As we were driving to Grand Island, we were stopped by a Patrolman, who told us that we were breaking the speed limit. He looked very familiar to us and we soon recognized him as Jerry Johnson. Jerry had now obtained the rank of First Sergeant in the Nebraska State Patrol because of out-standing service. He invited us to his home and we had a nice visit with him and his wife.
