Class Prophecy All aboard as we climb upon our 1966 atomic powered magic carpel, the Furetta. We are in hopes we will see all the seniors of 1956. As we take off the Armstrong landing field: Our first stop is near Miles City, Montana. Here we see a large dude ranch. Since it was such a beautiful place we decided to spend the day there. Entering the huge glass door, who should we meet but Leonard Spiehs, the multi-millionaire owner. He told us, while rolling a cigar around in his mouth, business was fine. As we journey on our way, the next stop is Las Vegas, Nevada. We had heard that one of our former classmates ran the Flamingo Hotel. W hy who is this class- mate? Why none other than Tom Hulme. Taking flight again, we hit a hot air pocket, which forced us to land. Landing on the desolate part of the desert, called Death Valley. We found a small farm. Here in this 117 weather, we see a man and woman hoeing peanuts. We walked up to them wishing to know who this daring couple was . We were surprised to see that it was Larry Spiehs and his brave wife, Trust Larry to do the impossible. Traveling on, we stop along the coast of California at the San Diego Naval Base. Here we see two of our former classmates, Duane Rogers and Don W addington on the way to the navy doctor. It seems they just got back from a twenty mile cruise out to sea, and have a “slight case of sea sickness. Leaving California we journey on. Looking through the clouds we see a huge Indian Reservation. Deciding to stop for a while, we find we are in New Mexico. Here we are glad to renew acquaintance with our old classmate, Eleanora Swanson, who is teaching handwork to the Indians. She inquired about people in Cairo, and said her husband, Daryl Beilke, is working in the silver mines. Off again, now flying over the big state of Texas. Here we see a large sheep ranch. We were getting hungry, just then we saw a fluorescent sign below us flashing on and off DALES LAMBCHOPS' . This sounded very tasty so we decided to stop for a minute or two. Who should we find running the joint? Why a former classmate, Dale Hinkson. While cruising over Birmingham, Alabama, the song, “Mr. Sandman , struck our ears. Something strangely familiar about the music gave us a homesick feeling and urge to descend and see where it was coming from. Looking around we saw a brightly lighted building with a sign on which read, “Mademoiselle Patrice’s Dancing School '. Of course, you know- that Mademoiselle Patrice is the former Pat Hendrickson. How lucky we were to have stopped there on the night she was giving a party for all her former dancing pupils, of course the music was furnish- ed by her husband's famous dance band, “Bob and His Birmingham Bobcats '. 25

Taking to the air again we see the everglades and know that we are in Florida. We heard that the Globetrotters were playing a game in Miami and knowing that our classmate, Don Stange is playing with them, we de- cided to descend at once, not wanting to miss him. No, he hasn’t changed the color of his skin. He is the only white man ever having the honor to play with the famous Negro ball club. We had a very nice visit with Don after the game and among the things he told us was that the former Thelma Hahs, now Mrs. Clyde Veeder, was running a cafe in the French quarter of New Orleans. Not wanting to miss anybody, we made a special trip back to see her. The food there was ex- cellent. She said it naturally would be, because her husband, Clyde, was the head chef. In the air again, now flying over Pennsylvania, we swoop low over the Forbes baseball field of Pittsburg, We recognize a familiar face and land- ing we meet another classmate, Gerald Spiehs, trying out for the Pittsburg Pirates. Traveling on north to New York State, we circled the city of Syracuse, and and noticed a round glass building perched high on top of a small mountain. Landing on a small landing strip, we climbed the elevation. Sure enough it was the laboratory of Leroy Heupel. He spends many hours there in re- search and viewing the stars. We had a very interesting visit with him and his wife, Sandy, and their three sons. Flying west towards home, ’our next stop was Ludington, Michigan. This is a great fishing city near Lake Michigan. As we walked along the wharf, we see a huge fish market. Who should we see running it ? ? It is the form- er Dera Lea Stutzman. During the nice visit with her, we find out her husband, Dennis Klanecky, owns a fleet of fishing boats and he and his four sons were out on a fishing excursion. Now heading for our home town of Cairo, going over the city we see the population has tripled. Look at the factories. One big brick building took our eyes especially. Landing at the airport, we go to investigate this build- ing, finding out it is the telephone company. Just as we open the door we heard a voice say, “Lines busy ” We could recognize that voice anywhere. It was the former Arlene Southard, now Mrs. Jerry Strong. She is the head long distance operator. Cruising south over our home town, we notice a huge mansion stretching over one acre. Swooping down over the place, we see Don Bruce working in the field and five boys running around. Are those his hired hands ? No, they are their sons. Their two girls are helping Joyce in the kitchen. Flying on east, in a second we are in Grand Island. There we saw a large sign in the shape of a wheel. Coming closer, we see it is “The Big Wheel Bowling Alley”. Wishing a little entertainment, we decided to stop. Who should we find running the place? Why naturally our classmates Marilyn Wheeler and Virgie Wooden. Well, it is getting late, and we are tired from our long trip, but happy to have renewed old acquaintances. So back to our little ten-room ranch style home on a farm near Cairo, where I, the former Jackie Steinke, will be until I start to teach again in the fall.
