Text from Pages 1 - 52 of the 1955 volume:

Dedication To the time of romantic rides and double seated bi- cycles, organ recitals in the front parlor, taffy pulls on cold winter nights, bustles, whalebones, and celluloid collars. To the years of the handlebar mustache and barber- shop quartet. To the time when assignments were written on slates and girls put ink on the holes in their long, black woolen stockings. We, the graduating class, dedicate this, our Redskin of 1955, to the days we hear so much about, but never knew. Here’s to the good old daysl 1 z Editor-in-Chief........... School Board The Senior Class of “1955 wishes to express their appreciation to the school board, for making our school years educational and happy ones. We wish to thank them for the many things they have made possible for our studying and recreation. We appreciated the cooperation the board gave us on the annual, and would like to thank you. Hot Lunch Program This is the first year of the hot lunch program. The cooks that prepare the meals are Irma Veeder and Ann Burry. The program has been satisfactory in the preparing of the meals, and hope it will continue to do so. Our janitor is Harold Southard and he has been helpful in many ways. He has helped make our school years a success by his faithfulness and good humor. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: Miss Ingle Johnson. Mr. Clyde Colman, Mr. Harlan Nelson. Mr. Louis Hagan. Compliments Of ERICKSON-SWANSON HARDWARE 11 Class History In the fall of 1951, a group of seventeen hungry Freshmen, willing but frighten- ed, gathered for the long journey on the high seas of knowledge (sometimes the waves got a little rough). They were as follows: Larry Bellamy, Darrel Burndage, Don Ciem, Dallas Fowler, Jack Hadenfeldt, Beverly Hargens, Walter Johnson, Norman Kirschbaum, Fred Meyer, Lela Meyer, Dennis Murfin, Jerry Myers, Wanda Myers, Ray Poehler, Gary Rogers, Frances Runge, and Patsy Stairs. Early in the Freshman year Fred and Lela Meyer decided to leave us and at the end of the year Walter Johnson was enticed away by the promise of a good job. In our Sophomore year, with Seaman Anton Lawry at the helm, Gary Rogers was swept over-board and lost. We, however, added for a new crew member. Bob Luther. During the middle of the third year at sea Norman Kirschbaum transferred to a different ship. Mess Stewardess, Miss Johnson, tried desperately to save Patsy Stairs and Ray Poehler, who were dying of indigestion, but they went anyway. Sandy Hayden decided to pay fare and boarded our ship. We started to set sail once again but were detained when we decided to give a little entertainment at Carnegie Hall. We decided on the play, The Antics of Andrew . During the early part of our Senior year Sandy Hayden became seasick and transferred to Sick Bay. Rear Admiral Nelson took over command and guided us through the Storm of Final Exams. Chief Petty Officer Colman instructed us in the use of the gyro-compass and we navigated the Gulf of the Senior Play by the channel of Mr. Merkle’s Muddle. This voyage is not completed; this ship is not anchored in home port; this story has yet to be ended. 12 TV STATION Class Prophecy CHANNEL 13 Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. This is Larry Bellamy reporting on the people of the world from the class of “55” of Cairo High School. Don Ciemnoczolowski is reported to heve struck oil on his mink ranch in Arizona. Jerry Myers dropped the New York Yankees by a score of 1-0. Jerry as you all know pitches for the Cleveland Indians. It is rumored that Jack Hadenfeldt has found a new way in life. He is preaching at the Cairo Lutheran Church. Yale is having a little trouble with their professor, Doctor Dennis E. Murfin who thinks that the coeds are more fun than teaching. Wanda Myers and the former Marine Ed Schlund moved to their apartment at the Waldorf Hotel in New York. The love for money has gotten the best of Frances Runge who was working for the First National Bank of Grand Island. She left her job to accompany Tony Curtis t o his home. Dallas Fowler the noted electrician has found a new way in breaking the neg- ative current. The former Miss Beverly Hargens, while courting her future husband, invented a new geiger counter to keep track of him. It worked so well she sold it to the government. By the way she got her man. It is reported that the Navy has promoted Bob Luther to the rank of Admiral, Bob is reported to be engaged to a Cairo farm girl. Darrel Brundage is the prominent fullback of the Los Angeles Rams, who scored 24 points against the Detroit Browns to break all scoring records. This is Larry Bellamy the famous sports and newscaster signing off for Channel Compliments Of Compliments Of CAIRO CAR CLINIC CAFE RHODA VAN WINKLE Class Will My friends, you have been called to fulfill your duties as heirs of this, my respect- ed client, the class of 1955. May I as well as my lamented client, entreat that you receive your respective legacies in the spirit of unselfish friendship with which they are given ? We the class of 1955, in the town of Cairo, the county of Hall, and the state of Nebraska, being in as good mental condition as usual, and in much better temper than usual, do hereby make this, our last will and testament. My client has instructed me to pass on these few trinkets which they have be- queathed to the following people. As for their knowledge, abilities and money they have decided to take it with them. To the Juniors we leave our pride and intestinal fortitude. To our good friends, the Sophomores, we leave our patience. It will be found useful as the only means of enduring the Juniors. To the young and unsophisticated Freshmen we leave a map of the school build- ing so that they will not get lost and roam about in everybodies way. We also include with this map a book entitled, “How to Tell the Teachers’ . You will notice we say how” to tell them not “what . They will find this information very valuable. To our old school building itself, we leave the peaceful quiet caused by our absence and any apple cores, wads of gum, or crumpled notes we may have left behind. I, Wanda Myers, will my ability to keep true to my man to Arlene Southard. I, Dennis Murfin, do reserve and keep all my gray matter to be used hereafter in college. But do hereby will Leroy Heupel my limited knowledge of romance al- though he may already have it? I, Beverly Hargens, will my ability on how to get a diamond to Karen Rathman in hope that she may use it well in future years. I, Bob Luther, will my ability to get along with all the girls to Don Hargens. I, Jerry Myers, will my brain power to Don Stange, even though he does not want it. I, Jack Hadenfeldt, will my safe driving to Tom Hulme as he really needs it. I, Larry Bellamy, will my ability to keep on a diet to Mr. Colman. I, Frances Runge, will my ability to pop corn to Pat Hendrickson. I, Darrel Brundage, will my innocence in matters of love to Virgie Wooden. I, Dallas Fowler, will my curly hair to Wayne Johnson. I, Don Ciem, will my brain power to Wayne Veeder. Our last item of our will and testament is to our faithful janitor, Harold Southard. The memories of the good times we have had in this old school, and may he keep them always. Compliments Of BAIRD’S PROPANE SERVICE 14 Compliments Of STOP SHOP Groceries Drygoods BEAUTY SHOP This Ole School CHORUS VERSE II CHORUS VERSE III CHORUS This ole school is losing its Seniors, This ole school is losing its brains. These ole Seniors are hardened veterans. As they studied through the years of pain. This ole school once rang with laughter, This ole school heard many shouts. Now she trembles in the darkness, As the Seniors all walk out. Ain’t a gonna need this school no longer, Ain’t a gonna need this school no more. Ain’t got time to study our History, Ain’t got time to sweep the floor And make Mister Nelson mad. Ain’t a gonna need this school no longer, We’re gettin ready to meet the world. This ole school is gettin weary, This ole school is a gettin old. These old Seniors are too brilliant, These old Seniors are too old. Oh our knees are gettin’ shaky, But we feel no fear nor pain, Cause we see our diplomas peekin’ Through a teacher’s mean, cruel hand. Mister Hagan lies a-sleepin He don’t know we’re going to leave, Else he’d wake up in the assembly, And he’d sit and howl and grieve. But our Senior days are over, Ain’t gonna study our books no more, When Mister Nelson hands us our diplomas, We’ll be headin’ for the door. Compliments Of SCHLUND’S TEXACO SERVICE Compliments Of PERK’S IGA 15 Let Us Admit It Let us admit it fairly as high school Seniors should: We've had no end of lessons, and they’ve done us no end of good. We entered as timid Freshmen, we leave as graduates bold. And we find it hard to realize the know-ledge our young heads hold. We’ve had our foolish notions knocked higher than Franklin’s kite; Our minds have been made over, and we know it served us right. We’ve spent four years in labor hard to prove the fact once more That life is quite confused, and two and two are seldom four. We’re crammed to the brim with learning, and now w e must turn it to use. And if one of us is a failure, he hasn’t a single excuse. The more we work and the less we talk the better results we shall get. For we’ve had four years of training; it may make us successes yet. Let us admit it fairly as high school Seniors should: We're proud of Cairo High School; it’s donemus a lot of good. Class Officers President ... Vice-President Secretary ... Treasurer . . . . Our first six weeks of school were spent adjusting to school routine, getting acquainted with each other and our teacher, and telling about our homes and families. On walks in the crisp fall air we watched Mother Nature preparing for winter. By now we were well adjusted and having a good time together. At the end of the first six weeks Marilyn moved out of town. We all missed her. Our en- rollment climbed to five again at the end of the third six weeks period when the Harold Gibsons moved to Cairo and Linda became a member of our class. Halloween and Christmas were both celebrated by us with a party at school. We enjoyed a gift exchange at our Christmas Party. All of us, including our teacher, Mrs. Caswell, were guests in the home of Terry Caswell on her sixth birthday. Now plans are being made for a Valentine Party. We will make all of the favors and decorations for this party by our- selves. Special guest will be Mrs. Veeder, Mrs. Burry and Mr. Southard. If our plans materialize, we will have a train trip to Grand Island. We haven’t decided what we will do while we are in the city. Band was introduced as an extracurricular activity in the schedule of Cairo High School in the fall of 1952. The instructor, Mr. Riggs, had worked the band into playing con- dition by the spring and summer of 53, when the band gave a few outdoor recitals. In the fall of 1953 Mr. Foreman took over the music department at the beginning of the term but was forced to leave because of illness in the family. Mr. Perkins was retained by the School Board to take Mr. Foreman s place.
