David Gonzales. David was born to Sally a nn Isbell on November 16,1967 in Geneva. Ohio. In 1973. they moved to Carey where David began school. David grew up in a somewhat large family. He has two brothers (Richard and Robert) and four sisters (Virginia Riegle, Barbara Gamble. Gloria Estep, and Sally Gon- zales). Of these children. David was the sixth. David's hobbies were football, wrestling, and just being with his friends. He was well-liked and easy to get along with because of that certain smile or the way he would tell a joke. We will always love and miss you. David. The Class of 1987 2 David at birth. David when he was 7 years old. Together We’ll Make It The title and the picture on the cover combine to form this year's CARY A TID theme. Carey High School has had its share of problems and heartaches this year: Mr. McClintock's departure, the death of David Gonzales, and school vandalism. That's a lot for one school to go through, so the seniors on the yearbook staff came up with a title that really hit the spot: Together We'll Make It. For the Seniors, it means closeness — sticking together and trying not to be alone. If things are shared, it '$ much easier to get through them. For the underclassmen, it means hang in there — together, and make Carey a great place to be. More time is spent in this building when you are growing up than anywhere else. Make the best of it — stand together and be proud of Carey High. Look through the yearbook, remember 1987, and know how together we made it. 4 Togeffttt, SvIM Mete ft 5 7 NAME nickname tuiuRt nANS BIGGEST PROBLEM Terri Arend Cloe Red Good tobi marriage GurS in the class of 88 John Raker Bake College. sports English Juite Same Ramer Big f Bucks R. Tony decided he wanted to compete in the Ms. Carey High School Senior Pageant. Of course Jerrod could not allow this! His wife. Heather, could not be challenged. To insure his wife's victory, he bought a lethal weapon — The Egg Beater — from two farm girls named Kim and Julie. They were selling the weapon to buy Farmer Jenot a new bike. As the plot thickens — Tony was informed of the intentions of Jerrod by Sargeant Anna. In order to protect himself. Tony then hired two private investigators (in disguise) — John and Kim. otherwise known as 0024 and 0010. On the night of the big event. Jerrod took Tony (Now being called Tonia) hostage! — Will they be saved? Will Mrs. Jerrod win? Where are 0024 and 0010? Have no fear! Just as Jerrod began torturing his hostage with the Egg Beater. John and Kim saved the day. Now Jerrod was their hostage. (P.S. — By the way. Heather was beat anyway by an unexpected contestant. Sargeant Anna. But the key to being a good cheerleader is spirit with a smile. Without this, a cheerleader cannot perform her best. It's nice to have the best jumps or the best motions, but some things mean nothing without spirit and a smile. The 1986-1981 basketball cheerleaders had both talent and spirit. They did their best to keep the crowds going while at the same time performed floor cheers. The cheerleaders held a spirit week, pep rallies, and performed three pom-pom routines during the season. This is done by selling advertisements. The yearbook staff members go to businesses and ask them to pay for an advertisement which will appear in the yearbook. Working on the yearbook is not an easy task, but without it. students would have nothing to look back on in the years to come. Each year a different veteran is honored for his brave service in war times. Unfortunately, each of the men died in the line of duty, but their service will never be forgotten. This year's honored veteran was Mr. Gerald Franklin Pahl. Mr. Pah! served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Pahl was killed on D-Day, June 6. 1944. on board the USS Corry. The ship had been part of the allied invasion and came under heavy fire. The destroyer hit a submerged mine that almost cut the ship in two. Gerald had been below deck when the accident occurred and was killed along with twelve other crew members. Mr. Pahl's memorial service was held in July of 1944 at the Christ Luthern Church. A letter from Gerald to his mother 128 March 20. 1987, Carey High School held its first (annual) student facuity basketball game. Students were charged $1.00 to attend and cheer on the team of their choice. Both the student and the faculty teams had cheerleaders and the game was refereed by Mr. Decker. Everyone involved had a super time! Unfortunately (or fortunately), the faculty beat the students by two baskets. 129 Will Jamie's foul shot make it through the hoop? Happy couples dance to the sound of Voice . Prom is always a very special time for everyone. Excitement runs high in the air as dresses, tuxes, and dates are found. Girls spend hours in front of the mirror searching for that perfect way to fix their hair. Guys spend their time washing and waxing the car while at the same time praying that it doesn't rain! Although expectations are always high, no one knows exactly how the evening will end. Hopefully, for all it is just as they dream. This year 's prom was held on May 16 at the Shrine Cafeteria. Couples danced under the theme of Until Midnight to the sounds of Voice. After-prom followed the banquet — a dance at Mt. Idy. Although this year's prom is gone forever the memories will be with us always. Keep them close to your hearts they will be part of the fondest memories of high school you'll have to look back on. 130 Wonder what the ioke was? The Honor Society is different from any other high school organization. It is special because to become a member, you must work to meet specific membership requirements. These requirements are to maintain a 3.5 grade point average and have 17 activity points as a junior and 22 points as a senior. Members are also evaluated according to scholarship, character, leadership. and service. This year’s induction of the new Honor Society members was held on May 7. There were seven new inductees, including 6 juniors and one senior. For those who didn't make it — keep working. You still have next year ahead of you to make a fresh start. 132 Two-year senior members. Julie Newcomer and Lisa Davis perform a flute duet. Honor Society officers with the advisor. Homecoming is always an exciting time, and this year was no exception. Anticipation was running high among the students as the results of the senior class vote for homecoming court were being tallied. Preparations were being made by the student council for the pre-game festivities and the post-game dance. When the time finally arrived for the announcing of the court, there were many emotions in the air. Some were of disappointment or dismay, but most were of happiness. After cheering the football team to victory, students danced to the music of Barry Culver and enjoyed the theme of Love Comes Walking In.” The slow dancing was led by King Chuck Tanner and Queen Anna Plott as the night slowly wore away. Memories of Homecoming 1986 will be with us forever. Hopefully for everyone, they will be good ones. 134 Anna Plott ami Chuck Tanner are all smiles. 135 This year’s school play was not just a comedy — it was comedy with a very special message. That message dealt with people and feelings. Although society has a habit of labeling people, it is wise to look beyond the label to the real person. You may be surprised at what you find. This message was portrayed through eleven characters. The play centered around an older woman. Mrs. Ethel P. Savage, who had been placed in an institution by her three stepchildren. They thought her insane because she dared to be different, she dared to fulfill her dreams. They thought that by placing her at The Cloisters she might give up the money left to her by her husband. While at The Cloisters . Mrs. Savage meets five wonderful people. She learns that there is much more to them than appears on the surface, and comes to love them dearly. The crowd was kept in suspense about Mrs. Savage's bonds until near the end when she retrieved them from inside her teddy bear. The play was performed on April 14th and 15th. and a Great Job goes to all cast members. Miss Wilhelmina speaks with her husband. Jeff. Jeffrey. Mrs. Savage. One special evening at Carey High School does just that: it recognizes students who worked hard throughout the year at the annual A wards Assembly program. It is at this time that you really feel good about everything you've done. Many students were recognized this year on May IS. 1987. The program began at 7:00 pm and included many various awards presentations. It was at this time that Mr. Frank Heck was inducted into the Carey Hall of Fame. A yearbook dedication was also made to Da vid Gonzales by Beth Mewhorter and Angie Roark. A new program featuring a Grandmother of the Year” was introduced. The I9S7-SS grandmother will be Mrs. Gertrude Huf-ferd. She will be invited to attend numerous events throughout the year. Just in case you might not have received anything this year, don't be discouraged. There is always next year. Angie Roark speaks al the program. David Hunter receives a scholarship. Millstream Joint Vocational School in Findlay was something new to the Carey School System this year. The school offers various vocational courses in which the students learn everything about a trade before graduating. At the time of graduation, the students are ready to pursue their choice of careers. We had 17 students participate in the program this year. Our students participated in many activities throughout the year. Some of these include, two students involved with the Home- coming Court, the skills contest in which Eric Johnson placed second in the welding contest. Jerry Conolly went to the state competition with the Electronics Display Team. Elvira Hernandez placed fourth in a banking contest. and Cami Chevalier placed seventh in a shorthand competition. Many congratulations go to these students who are the first to attend this school, and much good luck to those who continue there during the next year. 141 Senior Heather Smith gave her advice to the student body on being selected October student of the month: '‘When something bad happens, smile and keep trying to do better. She enjoys playing the piano and babysitting in her spare time. Among Heather's other achievements are: serving on the 1986-1987 Homecoming Court, being a cheerleader, being elected senior class secretary, and she also participates in French and Drama clubs. Heather's plans for the future are indefinite. Student of the month for November was senior Julie Newcomer. She is the daughter of Mr. Mrs. Roger Newcomer. Julie participated in many activities, some of which were band, drama club. GAA. and basketball. She was co-editor of the Nutshell and is a member of the National Honor Society.
