Myers. As a boy, Mr. Myers grew up on the West side of Columbus and graduated from West High School in Columbus. After High School he attended the Ohio State University. During his college years, Mr. Myers went into the army for three years and five months. One year was served in Japan with the first occupational troops. He finished college, majoring in science and social studies. He received his master's degree at Toledo University and did some additional work at Ohio State. His first teaching job was at Maumee High School. During his thirty years at Carey School, he has accomplished many things to be proud of: Early in the 1960’s he opened a classroom for the severely handicapped in a storeroom in downtown Carey. This eventually lead to Angeline School. In 1965, he was able to establish a special class in the Carey building for EMR. All of this was accomplished with little or no state support. Mr. Myers is also proud of the building program which was voted in 1961 and completed in 1963. This building program included: A new gym, an art room, a chemistry lab, a physics lab, and a vo-ag department in the high school. In the elementary building new additions included: A multi-purpose room, a media center room, and a kindergarten room. Mr. Myers' wife, Eloise recently retired from teaching. Their three children also have teaching careers. David is a teacher at Mohawk, Susan teaches in the Findlay City School system, and Lynn Dee is a kindergarten teacher at Carey. Mr. Myers retired as superintendent January 1, 1986. He accomplished many things in his years at Carey. Thank you for your time and concern at Carey. We wish you well in your retirement. CLASS OF 1986 Mr Myers in the Army Mr. Myers with his son, David. 2 Dedication He enjoys the game of pool. Age 5. Dedication 3 Theme: 100 Years of Change CHS has now seen 100 years come and go. During these 100 years, many changes have taken place. Changes from faculty, staff, administration, students, parents, the community, and the building itself. Through the years, all of these things have evolved and changed into what we see here today. The school has gone through many cycles of growth and decline as is common everywhere. But, through each of these changes, the school hopefully comes out for the best! This year the Caryatid, along with everything else, has also undergone some changes. Keeping in mind the theme of the book, 100 Years of Change, ” the staff hoped to present to everyone a small glimpse of the past, along with a peek into the future, and of course, an in-depth look at the year (now past and part of the CHS history!). In presenting this theme, the yearbook staff decided to work from this year’s events to past year’s events. The cover also indicates this: showing today’s mascot the Blue Devil — on the front cover, and yesteryear’s mascot — the Cuyuga Indian — on the back cover. A piece of change for every year from 1886 to 1986 connects each of the years together, as one generation of CHS graduates connects with the next years’. Also in keeping with the theme, the classes have been presented backwards. ” The eighth grade appearing first because they represent the future of CHS, then the freshmen, sophomores, and the juniors who also represent various times of the future. Finally, the seniors are presented. They appear in ivory-colored paper and sienna-colored ink to give the appearance of something old. These seniors of 1986 — though not forgotten — now belong in the history books of CHS. They have graduated and will now go forward. Perhaps they will carry on many of the longstanding traditions they have learned, or maybe they will make changes as they see the need to. Whatever path they choose, may good luck go with them. One piece of advice sticks in my mind as I write this: The only thing that is sure, is change itself.”So — here’s to the next hundred years of change at CHS! Get ready for them, because they are already here! 100 Years Change Clubs Organizations Clubs Organizations Division WHO: The National Honor Society consisted of 25 members: Fifteen new junior members, one new senior member, and nine seniors who were members last year and this year. He came to Carey from Russia Local School District in Shelby County. Prior to that, he was a junior and a senior high school assistant principal and also a principal in Hicksville. He held various teaching positions during his fifteen-year career in education. We have heard: I like to be close to the students and staff. I enjoy that part of the school system and can't visualize being a large city superintendent.” All my opinions are based on the attitude and philosophy that students are why we are here.” 1 am who I am and I'm not anyone else. I don't confess to know it all; I don't confess to be a savior. 74 Administration Mark C. McClintock Another New Face The 1985-1986 year brought about many changes. One of the changes was in principals. Principal McClintock graduated from Wooster High School. He received his BS from Ashland College, his MA from Eastern Michigan and then furthered his studies at the University of Akron. Some of the schools with which he has been affiliated are Ashland High School, Wayne County JVS, Lima Senior, and Elyria West. He was a teacher at Cambridge from 1978-1981 and an assistant principal from 1981-1985. Upon entering CHS, three main goals were attempted; discipline improvement, professional growth for the teaching staff, and curriculum improvement. PROM Ribbons, lace, flowers, hoops, bow-ties, and tails are each a pan of one very special event: the Junior-Senior Prom. The excitement starts every year in about March, and slowly builds. Juniors decide on the theme, and start making the decorations, while the seniors are trying their hardest to find out what it is. April starts the shopping sprees as the girls thoroughly search each mall for that perfect dress. Those girls who don't yet have a date listen patiently to their friends' detailed descriptions of their dresses, while still hoping that they will have the opportunity to shop for their own. The guys seem to be getting anxious too, as those who don't yet have a date begin frantically searching for one. As the day draws nearer, corsages, boutonnieres, and tuxes are ordered, and the search begins for the perfect car to drive. Hair appointments are made for the girls, and the guys are beginning to plan how the evening will be spent. Finally, the day arrives. Last minute details are taken care of, and school is buzzing with talk about the big event. At last, A Night in Heaven begins. This year's prom was a success thanks to the many people who took part in it. Seniors, we hope you enjoyed it.Juniors, there's only one prom left — make it the best. And Sophomores, good luck with next year's prom! Alice Boyce and Mr. Jenot showing us all how to dance. 108 Prom Junior class president Roger Wentling welcomes the seniors. Jerrod Jacoby and Andrea McCarley dancing the night away. Jerrod Savidge. Steph Schmitz. Amy Withrow, and Tony Orians at the head table. From 109 AWARDS ASSEMBLY The annual CHS Awards Assembly is a time for students to be proud of their individual accomplishments. It is a time to show family and friends that you worked hard to achieve the honor you are receiving. And for those who didn't quite reach their goal, it gives them incentive to keep on trying, for there is always next year. This year the assembly was held a little differently than usual. In years past, it has always been a part of the regular school day. This year it was held in the evening, giving more par- ents a chance to attend. During the assembly, scholarship certificates were given to students with a 3.5 grade average in each of the classes. Various other senior scholarships and awards were also presented. In addition to the various student awards, the Caryatid presentation was given to Douglas W. Myers, the previous superintendent of the Carey schools. Bob Cole was inducted into the CHS Hall of Fame and a slide presentation was given by Mike Conley. Junior. Anna Ploit, happily received her award. Success is failure turned inside out — The silver tint of the clouds of doubt. And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar; So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit — It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit. 110 Awards Assembly Heather Smith receives the musical award for her Mr. Boutwell and Mike Conley are all smiles for this award, role as Maria. Homecoming 115 HOMECOMING DANCE --- CHERISH THE MOMENTS - When we think of homecoming, we think of fun, memories, and a great football game; and Homecoming 1965 was just that. (Especially for King Chris Niederkohr and Queen Jodi Derr). The evening got started as each of the candidates were walked down the field to await the final decision. Tense and filled with excitement, the crowd grew relatively quiet until the results were announced — that this year's King and Queen were Chris and Jodi! To add further excitement to the night, the Carey High School March- ing Band had a big surprise planned. Five hundred red. white, and blue, helium-filled balloons were released to the sky as the band played God Bless the U.S.A. After watching the football team wipe out Wynford, it was off to the dance. Our people attended the dance held in the Laird Room from 9 pm to 12 midnight. Thanks to all who took part in making this homecoming special. Although that evening is now history, the memories wtll last forever. The new queen — Jodi Derr — is crowned. On the 16th of January — near midnight — the body of a man hurtled through space and crashed at the foot of the Faulkner Building. He was thrown, or leaped, from the roof of his penthouse. It is up to the jury to decide what really happened on that fateful night. Was it Karen, Faulkner's secretary and fellow swindler? One can only guess that hatred and revenge smoldered in her heart after being fired by Faulkner. After his marriage he had want- ed to start over, begin a new life, and the only thing to do was to get rid of Karen. The entire play took place in a courtroom with twelve members of the audience selected as the jury. The cast rehearsed two different endings to fit whatever the jury decided. If you're wondering how it turned out, the jury found Karen innocent the first night, but guilty the second night of the play. The day officially starts with our favorite friend, the alarm clock. After hitting the snooze button for the third time and asking ourselves if we really have to do this, we finally find the energy to drag ourselves out of bed and hope this won't be our third tardy — because everyone knows what that means! Before you know it. it's 8:12 and time to be getting to first period. If you're lucky, you might even have French and be provided with a little morning music by the band. There are always a few who didn't quite make it this early, but by second period everything's pretty much on schedule. And before you know it, it's lunchtime. Is that good or bad? Depends on who you talk to! If you're full of energy you don't know what to do with, you can always take part in intramurals. If you don't like to participate, it's always fun to watch. After being refreshed, it's back to class. It always seems as though things get a little more rowdy after lunch, but be careful not to be too rowdy — unless you have time to kill after school! After glancing at the clock at least every 10 minutes, you find it's almost time for the last bell. You ask yourself, Can it really be that the day is over? Yes, it's true! You've made it through another day at Carey High School. Time to go home and get ready for tomorrow. I can t do a thing with this hair. A regular day in the halls at CHS. You mean you guys don’t have recess' 120 Student Life Student Life 121 A WALK THROUGH THE PAST 1886 THROUGH 1937 When the town of Carey was established, its citizens, recognizing the need of education for their children, provided a means of securing it. In 1844 (approx.) a frame school house was built. Then in 1854 another was built. Again in 1868 a two-storied brick building was erected on the site of the present West Building. This extremely large building housed four large rooms and one smaller one. In the year 1882 a high school course of study was adopted and the small room became the high school . The classes for the high school were conducted by the superintendent, J. A. Pittsford. In May, 1886, the first class of Carey High School graduated seven members. The second class, the class of 1887, boasted nine graduates. In May, 1887, the alumni was organized and their first meeting was held at the home of Supt. Pittsford. In September of 1887 another building was erected where the Colonel Crawford building now stands. It, for the times, was a fine modern structure, well lighted and heated, with eight large rooms, laboratories, and all other things needed for a growing school population. R. H. Morrison was superintendent from 1887 to 1891. During these four years two classes were graduated, those of 1890 and 1891. Due to changes made in the curriculum, there were no graduating classes in the years 1888 and 1889. In September, 1891. T. A. Bonser became superintendent, remaining until May, 1903- These were years of great change and progress. A three-year course of study was adopted, then a four-year Note: Information and data taken from an article which appeared in the 1937 Caryatid course, and for a few years there was a five-year course, with the first year being called a preparatory class. J. L. Lasley was superintendent from 1903 to 1907. His successor was A. J. Now-lan who remained until 1914. During this time the course of study was again changed, giving students the choice of three four-year courses; Classical, Scientific, and English. C. E. Hoskinson followed Mr. Nowlan and in 1916, C. M. Beitler became the superintendent. In 1921 he was succeeded by R. H. Gillespie who remained only a short time. A. M. Hornby was superintendent from 1921 to 1925. During this time a new high school building was completed and first occupied in 1921. During the years of 1925 through 1928, Mr. C. E. Palmer became the new superintendent. In 1928 Mr. Palmer was succeeded by Mr. W. L. Arnholt. Among the outstanding events in his administration was the building of the Colonel Crawford Elementary School and an enlargement of the high school. These changes were made necessary by a program of consolidation which united several rural school districts with Carey. A further improvement at this time was the promotion of the school to the exempted village classification and exemption from county supervision. As the years have passed, one can also note the constant improvement and broadening of the school program both as to curricular and extra-curricular activities. Among these advancements are the additions of school music, band, orchestra, choirs, athletics and dramatics. 122 History 100 Years of Change Seniors SentD 9 123 Lisa Barnett 100 YEARS OF CHANGE The Class of 1986 is a special one! We are the 100th class to attend Carey High School. The first class, in 1886, had only a few graduates — 7 to be exact! A Cuyuga Indian was the mascot at that time. In the following decades it changed to a Biue Devil (during the 1940's). The first Caryatid was published in 1924, and the senior pictures looked somewhat like this year's Old Style senior pictures Like that first class of 1886, the Class Of 1986 is now a pan of the Carey High School history. Throughout the 100 years of Carey's existence, one thing has always remained the same — CHANGE! Although we've had more than our share of bad times, we somehow made it through. What we need to do is remember the good times at CHS. Good luck in the future! Class Secretary, Andrea McCarley Senior Class: This has been an interesting year to say the least. I feel our class is so different from any other class that has graduated from CHS. We are made up of all sorts of individuals and we all show that we can be different (Some more than others!). Some people have made things really difficult for our class, but we prevailed. I'm sure all of us will succeed in whatever we set out to do, because we all have that important leadership quality it takes to succeed. Vice President, Michael D. England Senior Class: We've made it through high school and 1 believe, as a class, we have accomplished everything we set out to do. I would like to thank you for the time and effort you have put into our class activities. Good luck in all that you do. Senior Class President, Amy Withrow Graduation has passed and we have finally made it. Now is the time when we go our separate ways and make a new life for ourselves. NOT ALL GOOD While most of the memorable events listed were of a positive nature, some reflected the seniors' dissatisfaction with certain conditions at the high school. There has been a lot of trying times this year which I am very glad to be leaving behind, Michele Karcher said This year’s seniors began their final year in high school with a new principal and. mid-way through the year, a new superintendent. The changes in discipline procedures and the necessity of getting accustomed to a different way of thinking and a new personality proved to be frustrating to a number of students. The sit-in on the front lawn staged by the students in protest of the school hoard’s non-renewal of certain teacher contracts was also listed as a memorable event. “For once, all the kids pulled together for something. That doesn't happen often.” Mitzi Johnson commented A FINAL NOTE Of all the highlights and events listed by the graduates, perhaps the most unusual came from Angela Coldiron She said the highlight of her senior year was being able to supply gum for people who appreciated it.” And, although they won't experience it until Friday evening, several eager seniors listed “graduation'' as the most memorable event of their years at Carey High School Graduation IV) Roger Jenot — Teacher of the Quarter — 1 Roger Jenot. a CHS graduate and a teacher there for the past 17 years, was the first teacher recognized in the teacher of the quarter program.
