13! Ill PROLOGUE Ageless is the thought that man possesses three basic needs-food, clothing and shelter. Surely there is a fourth MUSIC! It is the medicine for a breaking heart! It is the inspiration for romance! It is the discipline for the marching band! It lends spiritual alertness! It has more power to urge a man to battle than any convincing argument. Whether with the heart, feet, or soul, music attunes life to its best. The least of us, be he the smallest piccolo, to the greatest, like unto the mighty bass, is needed to create life’s symphony. The graduating class of 1962 takes pride in presenting their Caryatid designed around the theme of MUSIC. For some of you, life may play heavily on the white keys, yes, and the black keys. You’ll have your majors and minors. May the discords be mighty few. May the harmony of a well directed life lead you up the ascending scale of success to the melody of a Great Well Done.” Pomp and Circumstance! Such is our tremendous crescendo. We now go forth to write the words. This fact coupled with the fact that the squad was plagued with injuries from the very start of the season adds up to two strikes against them even before starting. But, it was by no means an unsuccessful season. Through the absence of the more experienced players with their injuries, the coach was able to let the younger men in, thus giving them the opportunity to prove and better themselves and get valuable experience. BUT IN BASKETBALL THERE’S NO DEFEAT AS LONG AS HOPE’S ALIVE. LEFT TO RIGHT: Kenny Rice, John Butcher, Beagle, Dave Myers, Dick Myers, Russ Chester, Thad Malesh, Denny Brandt, Dick Tanner, Marvin Coach Dick Kuzma. The cagers of Carey High for the most part were young and inexperienced this year. Although the season was not a successful one as far as games won and lost went, it was a success in the sense that valuable experience was gained by our youthful players which will prove most useful in following years for Carey High. In basketball as in any other sport it’s team work that wins games. Our boys have learned to work with each other as a team this year. Add their ability to work together and their experience plus their enthusiasm for the sport and you can have but one answer and that answer is an excellent team for Carey in the coming years. BACK OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO IS PLAYING IN THE GAME Marv Beagle - 6’4” - 165 pound Senior. Marv had more than the necessary amount of desire and ability. Although having been injured, he displayed great ball handling all the time. He will be lost by graduation. Russ Chester - 5’7” - 140 pounds. Russ showed great ability and will show even more in the coming years. He also was the quickest and most aggressive man on the team. Denny Brandt - 5’10” - 150 poundjunior. Denny played his first year on varsity but gained the needed experience last year on reserves. Denny was hampered by injuries but dispite this he had a very good year for the Blue Devils. He will be a great asset to the team next year. Dick Tanner 6 1 ”-180 pound Senior. Dick played his first year of varsity ball. He has been leading the team in points and rebounds. Dick’s help will begready missed next year. Tbad Malesh - 5’7” - 135 pound Sophomore. This was Thad’s first year on varsity. He helped the team in many ways and should do even better in the next two years. The boys sharpen their shooting and rebounding for a league game. This year, the annual staff has decided to pay a long-overdue tribute to the hardest working little group of kids in our high school, the cheerleaders. Few people actually realize how much work these kids must do and how much spirit they must have in order to keep the cheering section of Carey High alive. From the freezing weather, snow, and rain of football season to the heat and stickiness of the gym in basketball season, whether we are winning or losing, they stick with it, cheering their hearts out for the team and the school. The kids at Carey High salute and congratulate you for a fine job well done! Keep up the good work!! Copy, captions, headings, typing, pictures, deadlines, ads, and hard work are terms familiar to an annual staff. We have tried to present to you in the pages of this book a record of achievements in the past year at Carey High. In years to come it is our fond hope that you who are leaving and you who will remain may look back and remember the achievements, disappointments and good times in the 1961-62 year. With a feeling of accomplishment we, the annual staff of the Caryatid add the finale to your book.
