MYERS The 1959-60 school year for the Carey Exempted Village Schools has been Characterized by much improvement in the educational program. Four additional teachers have been added to the teaching staff, many new textbooks have been purchased, and a full time testing guidance program for grades 7 -12 has been provided. In addition to the above, the school’s cafeteria has been completely redecorated and the ceiling acoustically treated, the guidance office has been remodeled, and much of the painting and renovating has been done throughout the buildings and grounds. All of these improvements have been made for the purpose of helping students in the Carey schools to get a better education and more effective preparation for living in our wonderful country. As Principal of Carey High School I enjoy the fine spirit of co-operation of teachers and pupils. This spirit gives us a gobd school of which we are very proud. As we look back on the school year 1959 -60 we will remember it as one of the happiest years of our lives and having a part in the achievements of this year will give us something to remember and make us proud of our Alma Mater in years to come. Director Mr. Bixler MARCHING FORMATION The beat of the drums and the sound of a whistle being blown hails a new year for those in the Carey High School Band. They mean more nard work to make each year better than the last. This year after the homecomings of the summer the band settled down to practice for the football game half-times. A number of well executed and interesting shows were presented. With the end of the football season, the band welcomed the concert season with the annual Christmas Concert. Following this, came the practice for the mid-winter and spring concerts. Both were very successful. Along with the concert season comes basketball. Many of the band members comprise pep bands, which add a musical background to all home basketball gimes. Officers elected for the year were: Carl Sharp — President, Barbara Wise — Secretary, and Marilee Eschbach — Reporter. The Librarian was Marilee Eschbach. Head majorette Cindy Keller, was ably assisted by Barbara Rettig, Gay Gardner, and Karen Myers. These four girls added a pleasing flash of twirling. The ‘outstanding performance of the band can largely be attributed to the hard work and patience of its director, Walter Bixler. The Blue Devils started the season with a victory over Oak Harbor, the first time in 8 years, and an important win in Sandusky Bay Conference play. The first defeat came when Fremont St. Joe, co-champs in the league and only once defeated during the season, beat the Blue Devils 28-6 for the teams worst defeat of the season. The other two defeats of the season were at the hands of highly rated Tiffin Calvert and Crestline. The team outplayed their opponents in everything but the score in these two games. Carey, in their 2nd year in the league finished third with a 3 - 2 won lost record. A highly successful season ended in a 6-0 defeat of a fired-up Upper Sandusky team. It was the second straight victory over the county rivals. Carey High School Blue Devils, sporting the tallest team in the school's history and one of the tallest in the state, overcame a midseason lag to finish with a respectable 12-6 won-loss record. In nine games on the home court, the team was undefeated; but, on the road they salvaged only 3 out of 9. Offensively, the Blue Devils scored a total of 985 points to 940 for the opposition, an average of 54.7 as compared to 52.2. Because of their tremend- ous height, 6 ft. 4 in. team average, the Blue Devils were outstanding in the rebounding department. Under the defensive basket Carey led their opponents 448-188 for a game average of 24.9 to 10.4. As the number of schools having tennis teams is relatively small, only a few matches were played. The first match was played with Fostoria. The Blue Devils topped them with a score of 4 - 3. The second match was played with the Blue Devils hosting Mansfield and again they came out on top with a score of 5-2. The third match was played at Mansfield. The Blue Devils lost 3 - 4. As the closer of the season they played Fostoria again and soundly defeated them with a score of 6-1. The Carey Blue Devils' track squad compiled a 4 win 4 loss dual track meet season. In the Sandusky Bay Conference Meet, Carey finished third to Clyde and Oak Harbor. In the Upper Night Relays, Carey finished sixth. The outstanding individual for the squad season was Leo Beagle. Leo ran the hurdles, dashes and high jumped. Leo was a big loss to the I960 squad. Runner-up to the outstanding individual was Sam Welker. Sam has been Careys mile and half mile runner for the past three seasons. His abilities' for the I960 squad were also greatly missed due to graduation. Both Leo and Sam competed in the 1959 Ohio State High School track meet in Columbus. Leo Beagle was the outstanding performer in the Sandusky Bay Conference meet. He won the high hurdles, tied for first in the high jump, tied for first in the 220 dash, and third in the 100 yard dash. Tonight we are going to deviate from our usual program and present instead the case history of the Carey High graduates of I960. I heir fame and fortune has been spread all over the world. So tonight we will travel to all of these places to get the story. Our first story takes place in Paris, France. We have just received an invitation to attend a party given by the ever-lovin' hostess Sheila Prescott. As we look over the large crowd of men and women, we notice many of the I960 graduates. Over there in the corner is Paul Sharp, the most elusive bachelor in town. Many a girl’s heart has been broken because of him. Joining him now is another wolf or should I say tiger? It's none other than Ralph Tiger” Musgravc. Tiger” is known as the Millionaire Playboy” in Hollywood. He is one of the biggest producers since Cecil B. DeMille. And now to Station ZLYCOG in Moscow. Tonight the Hindengooseburg Orchestra, under the direction of the famed conductor Thomas Saunders, will present The Blue Ditch Con-certion in F Minor.” Two of the soloists are Dawn Dunn, The sw'eetest cornetess this side of Chicken Creek and Marilce Esch-bach, the baritone player who won fame in the Arctic. Scientist ''Alex” Zierolf has just made the first attempt to land on Mars. This is truly a woman's world since Karen Terry recently became the first woman president of the United States. News from Washington, D.C.! Charles Lamberjack, presidential aide, has just announced that the cranberry and poultry situation in 1959 was a fraud. How's this for switch? From Skunks Hole, Missouri, we receive word that Penny Evans was removed from the Mrs. America contest. In order to be a contestant, the ladies had to be married, but Penny wasn't. Her boyfriend, Chuck Dasher, just won't give in. Chuck is too busy coaching the pro-football team, The Persians. The Persians have just been beaten by the touring Russians coached by John Stombaugh. Now we go to Sugar Mills, Idaho, for the classic 1,00 mile super deluxe race. Five of the entrants are Carey High graduates of I960. They are Ronnie Zimmerly, Gene Walter, John Wen-zinger, Bill Lindsay, and Rex Orians. They haven't settled the old question yet of who has the fastest car. The domestic scene in Coons Hollow, Texas has been a little stormy lately. Joe Greer and his wife, the former Yvette Niemann have been having money problems. Joe just can't seem to make his money stretch. He is a factory worker with four children. Maybe he should return to farming. Since Yvonne Steen has become Secretary of Agriculture farm prices have hit such new highs that it is now very profitable to be a farmer. Due to the Secretary’s efforts the farmer is now’ getting the long neglected recognition. You would think Joe would finally give in, but he won’t. But another objector, Steve Rail has changed sides and now is engrossed in the farm situtation. He was appointed Deputy Secretary of Agriculture in view of his sincere efforts. The Women Haters Club of Cuba has gained a new member, Ted Walter. He is so despondent over losing his pet calf to Donnie Heubcrger. Other members of this club are Kenny Bakies whose pet parakeet flew the roost; Benny Rice who lost a pig; and John McDaniel who lost above all things his 30th girlfriend. Victor Worst still isn't joining the club. He is out to break John McDaniels record. Victor is on girlfriend number 25. I don't know if he will last. The youngest newspaper in Coconut Springs, Louisiana is the Sharp Times. The editor is Carl Sharp and the associate editor is Tony Ruffing. Join me as I look through the paper. Well, well, will you take a look at this! The story of the week is the wedding of Dave Wilcox and Eileen Rader. She finally landed him after 20 years of off again, on again engagements. Eileen's motto must have been Never give up. On the homey side in Mexico we find a new international union being formed. The group is working for shorter hours, more cooperation from their husbands, and a few more nights out. The name of the union? Kay Kohmann and her partner Barb Hayman are still raising those apples. They don’t make much on apples just hard cider. Their best buyer of hard cider is Dale Steyer. Dale's been arrested a few times for speeding by motorcycle cop Bob Ryman. Hope the police force has changed a little bit since 20 years ago. Flash! Bob and Joe Higgins have just filed a petition of bankruptcy due to their failure in the wocxl business. No one has need of wood now since the sun is used to produce heat and everything is made of metal. Carey is steadily becoming a ghost town, but there is a new business that didn’t exist in 1959. The shingles read The Futura Art Studio” under the direction of Carolyn Dible and Juanita dc Vincia Logsdon. They switched from portraits to modern impressions. It all came about when their students Tom Miller, Ronnie Robison, Harold Hackworth, Ronnie Weaver, and Marion Weaver decided to paint their idea of the perfect woman. I see than Becky Mulholland has just opened a cheerleading school. Isn't she getting a little old for that? Plenty of mishaps have happened to the residents of Carey during the past. It all began when Tony Dibling was buried under a couple hundred pounds of ground feed. The machine was over 30 years old and it just gave way. Tony was all right, he just had the wind knocked out of him. The next accident occurred at the home of Mary Bayes and Shirley Bartee. Their garbage disposal unit was acting up and they called in repairman Dick Dible. He fixed the unit but left the wrench in it. When they tried the disposal, the wrench flew out and hit Dick in the head. It required 17 stitches to close up the wound. Then the incredible happened. Bill Emerine, who has been selling newspapers on the corner of Main Street, w'as involved in an auto accident. He was hit by a Doodlebug driven by the Mayor of Carey, Wade Niederkohr! The case is to be tried by Judge Dennis England. The biggest robbery of the century took place in Carey last Friday. The upsi-Wupsi-Cola company has been losing untold amounts of money. The case was broken open by D A. Alvin Cole. He found that the ow-ner Patsy Plott and her partners Carol Stapley, Flossie Plott, Sue Turnbell, and Evea Altman have been drinking up the profits. On the other side of the domestic scene we have Judy Conley (Turner) and Shirley Bayes (Newcomer) who have been happily married for the past 20 years. Shirley is on her way to raising a basketball team. She now has 4 boys. While Judy is raising 4 brides for 4 brothers. Their children are attending the same Carey schools they attended. Only the teachers have been changed. Norma Coppler and her sister are teaching the first grade on a partnership basis. So ends the case history of the I960 graduates. Good luck, folks.
