Published by The Senior Class and Caryatid Staff of Carey High School Editor TOM ATKINS Business Manager GLENDA SNYDER Foreword We the graduating class of 1952 publish this 28th volume of the Caryatid with the sincere hope that it will be of great value to you in recalling your high school career. In a short time we will all go our separate ways, but with the aid of this book we hope to recall four of the most pleasant years of our life when we were together in Carey High School. We hope that the pages of this book will afford many pleasant hours in the years to come. . . the Class of ’52.. It is finished. I forgo With this all right in you, even that of tears. If I have spoken harshly, it will show How much I loved you. With you disappears A glory, a romance of many years. What you may be hence forth I will not know. The phantom of your presence on my fears Is impotent at length for weal or woe. Your past, your present, all alike must fade In a new land of dreams where love is not. We say then, farewell. The choice is made And we shall live to see the past forgot, If not forgiven. See, I came to curse, Yet stay to bless. I know not which is worse. —W. S. Blunt. . . DEDICATION We, the class of 1952, have made this dedication in an effort to show in a small way the appreciation we feel for the many things in which Miss Clagett has helped us during our four years at Carey High School. With her help we have had many enjoyable programs at Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and especially her help with our Junior Class Play. A helping hand, a word of encouragement, and always the flowers to help brighten her room and the day for us. These things will always be remembered and appreciated. Her radiant personality will be the light which will guide us through the years. With these thoughts in mind, we would like to dedicate ‘The 1952 Caryatid’ to Miss Thelma Clagett. 4 BOARD OF EDUCATION Harry Bowman, Dr. Harry Hosafros, Forest Davis, Vincent Brown, Russell Gottfried, Jennie Steen. Ohio SENIOR CLASS Miss Smith We the Senior Class of 1952 are closing the last chapter of our memories at Carey High School. Chapter I. Freshmen. This was the opening of a new world of initiations, meeting upper classmen and teachers, and acknowledgement of the thrill of recognition. Chapter II. Sophomores. The Sophomore year proved to be a very exciting chapter of our high school experiences. The highlight of that year was the two one-act plays we presented to the student body. Miss Clagett Chapter III. Jolly Juniors. With the help, guidance, and patience of Miss Clagett, we presented our play “The Divine Flora”. Then came the moon lite night of dancing, guitars, soft music and palm trees when we anchored our boat at Hawaii and gave tribute to the Graduating Class of 1951. Chapter IV. We treasure many happy memories in our last Chapter at Carey High School. Now we have the wonderful feeling of being respected, leaving assemblies first, and knowing at last we have fulfilled a childhood dream. Ronnie Treece, President, Franklin Emerine, Vice-President, Lucille Lowmas-ter, Secretary, and Mary Jane Collett, Treasurer, filled the executive offices for the year. We chose the red rose for our flower and red and white for our colors. And our motto, “From a little spark may burst a mighty flame.” Now as we turn the last page of the chapter, we say farewell and thank you to the teachers and friends who have made our four chapters complete. JUNIOR CLASS We started out in high gear this year and are trying, with difficulty, to live up to the memoirs of the Seniors. The Junior Class Play, “Tattletale,” was presented November 28, under the untiring direction of Miss Clagett. The cast will always remember the big scandal caused by the tattletale. Our treasury was built up by selling refreshments at the football and basketball games with the able assistance of Mrs. East, Miss Hack, Mr. Morris and Mr. Wilson, our class sponsors. We are planning for a successful banquet for the “Grand Old Seniors.” With happy memories of our Junior year we march on! THE PEOPLE S BANK CO. Carey, Ohio Gen. Banking-Time Saving Dept. After an excellent display of marching technique throughout the ’51 football season, the marching band was transformed into a 76 piece concert band. HUSTON LUMBER CO. Y-TEENS “To build a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. In this endeavor we seek to understand Jesus, to share his love for all people and to grow in the knowledge and love of God.” That is the purpose of the Y-Teen Club which was very active in both school and community life. The first meeting in October brought about the initiation of twenty-two new members to a total of thirty girls. In November the club sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Dance, the first school dance of the year. Before Thanksgiving vacation the club had Brotherhood Week. The girls, for a Christmas project, send chocolate candy overseas to other Y-Teen clubs. Also, they gave mittens to needy children in our community. Easter time brought about Easter Services, held by the Y-Teens. The Y-Teens proved that they were active and we hope that they continue to be so in the future years under the excellent supervision of Miss Lucia Grieser. HI-Y Under the excellent guidance and supervision of our advisor, Mr. Stoltz, the Hi-Y organization of Carey High School did much to create, maintain, and extend throughout the community, high standards of Christain character. Tom Atkins was elected president; Bob Cole, vice-president; Clair Shane, treasurer; Ronnie Treece, secretary; Floyd Pieracinr, Sergeant of Arms; and Jim Patterson, Chaplain. During the summer, Bob Cole and Clair Shane attended Camp Nelson Dodd and received much helpful information on the Hi-Y activities for the future year. The social activities of the club were a father and son banquet and an Easter program. With the co-operation of the Y-Teens we also had a lunch for the Marion St. Mary’s, Carey football players after their game. Toward the end of the year we had an initiation of the Juniors. There were many new members taken in at this time. The club also had many successful monthly meetings. Mr. Stoltz, Tom Atkins, Bob Cole, and Jim Paterson did most of the program planning. Usually we were entertained by a guest speaker or viewed a movie per- Sitting—Mr. Stoltz, Tom Atkin tainincr to tbo Pvpnina mpetinff Standing—Clair Shane, Floyd Pieracim, Bob Cole, Ronnie taming to tne evening meeting Treece, Jim Patterson. F. H. A. The F. H. A. girls are a group of sixty girls interested in Home Economics. They belong to this National Organization of Future Homemakers of America. This group meets monthly and works together to promote worthy home membership. Each year our members elect two “club mothers” by popular vote. This year our club mothers are Mrs. John Maenle and Mrs. William Keller. They help our advisor and assist at group activities. The necessary funds to operate are raised by selling ice cream and getting ads for the Farmers Institute. One of our highlights this year is our Valentine Sweetheart Dance in which the high school will be invited to attend. Also our Banquet in the Spring, by which the girls show their program of work to their mothers. We highlighted our November meeting by having a potluck supper and in December we held our monthly meeting followed by a Christmas exchange. We, the Seniors who are leaving this club, wish it many years of success. Sitting—Erlene Schlacter, Miss Hack, Charlene Phillips.
