Persis Newhard, Editor-in-Chief Tom Gibbins, Business Manager fon M or f We, the Seniors of 1950, present in this Caryatid the history of our final year at Carey High School. It is a portrayal of the activities that are a part of everyone's school life. May many happy memories be brought to those who turn the pages of this annual in the years to come. 2 3 For his many services to the school as Principal, as an advisor to the Hi-Y and the annual staffs during the past years, and as a teacher, the members of the Class of 1950 respectfully dedicate this edition of the Caryatid to Mr. Mulholland. 4 it. i i.xisrit. i rio I VW FACULTY Superintendent George Hartman Klimrit Of Education H. We chose Shirley Hughes as president, Clarence Hoepf as vice president, and Marcella Phillips as secretary-treasurer. Miss Smith and Miss Clagett served as class sponsors. We Seniors selected Out of Our Past Into Our Future as our guiding motto, green and white as our class colors, and the gardenia as our flower. One of the big events for us was the presentation of Lucky Penny during our Junior year. Judy Dible and Melvin Shreiner had starring roles. For our Senior play, the class decided to give the three-act play The Old School Spirit . The big event in sports was the Upper In o Our Future Sandusky-Carey football game which ended with a score of 19 to 12 in Carey's favor. All the Senior sportsmen should go out with a feeling of great accomplishment. Near the close of our Junior year, we gave, as a tribute to the Class of '49, a successful banquet following the Southern Colonial theme. Now, as Seniors, we are looking forward eagerly to the banquet to be given in our honor in the spring. Time is passing quickly now, and soon we will be hearing the familiar strains of Where, Oh Where , and we will be on our own in the wide, wide world . Four happy years will be in the past, but we, the Class of 1950, will carry with us into the future many fond memories, as well as the knowledge which we have gained. David Myers was elected vice-president, Jayne Mangett treasurer, Barbara Hunter secretary, and Leah Orians and John Windau, our hard working concession managers. We thank our sponsors, Mrs. East, Miss Shook, and Mr. Klotz, for their wonderful help and guidance throughout the year. We had a successful Junior Class Play The More the Merrier , thanks to Miss Thelma Clagett. We also had quite a number of boys doing their part on the football and basketball teams. E The 1949 edition of the Carey High School Blue Devil Band, with its snappy marching and playing, lived up to and surpassed the spectators' expectations. For the fifth consecutive year under the direction of Mr. Lewis Hawk, the band has gained steadily in size and improved in showmanship. With the closing of the football season, the marching band was transformed into a good concert organization. Three programs were highlights in the energetic concert season: the annual Christmas concert, a joint concert with the 30-piece orchestra, and the spring concert. 3wajorvt t cs C. Nye, S. Wright. S. This organization stresses the Christian attitude by carrying out the three points of the emblem's triangle—Service, Program, and Social. At the beginning of the year, the girls arranged a series of interesting and worthwhile topics for programs at each bi-monthly meeting. The girls' social calender was filled to the top this year. The tedious, week-long initiation of the new members was embarked upon gleefully by the seniors — received not so gleefully by the juniors (and by the janitors.) The traditional Sadie Hawkins Dance was carried out with great success. The group met with the Hi-Y at Christmas-time for a caroling party. Other major events were the ■rr Mother-Daughter Tea, the Dad-Daughter Date, and Secret Sister Week. At Christmas-time, the girls chose as their part in services, to join the national Y-Teen movement of Chocolate of Christmas , during which all the chocolate the girls could gather was packaged J and sent to children overseas. Then they collected gifts for a needy family. They also presented an impressive Christmas program with the Hi-Y. The last meeting, a farewell for the seniors, £ marked the end of a full and successful year. FIRST ROW: B. Sizemore, N. Strahm, F. Adelsperger. L. May. F. Adelsperger, M. Schlachter, R. The F.H.A. set its program up for the year by following the slogan of the State F.H.A., A Better World Through Happier Homes . Each one of the meetings was planned according to their outline, and dealt with getting along with others, making others happy, being a good leader, and making a better home. In November the group made Layettes for the Red Cross out of flannel. These consisted of gowns, slips, robes, blankets, and kimonos. Later on they made more baby clothes to be sent overseas to a displaced persons camp. At Christmas, the girls decided to help make more children happy, and bought gifts for the children's home in Findlay. The girls in F.H.A. will honor their mothers at the Mother and Daughter Banquet to be given in the Spring. They have also planned several other get-to-gethers with their families. A. FIRST ROW: M. A bake sale and a dance in the spring were other activities of the club. Under the able supervision of Miss Lucia Greiser, the Latin classes had many successful meetings. The Blue Devils worked under a hot August sun twice a day until the opening day of school. The Preview Game at Findlay found the boys in good shape. Carey started what looked like an undefeated season as they downed Leipsic, North Baltimore, and Marion St. Mary's, but were tripped by a strong Ada eleven. After downing Plymouth, Richwood, and Paulding, the Blue Devils traveled to Marysville for the League Championship game, but bowed to them 28-20.
