Dr, Van Buren is now in the medical corps of the United States armed forces with the rank ot captain. As provided by law, the Board at a meeting held February 8th, elected Bay Tracy to serve the unexpired term oi Dr. Van Buren. This year our class is under the expert guidance of Miss Lyden and Mr. Wentling. We chose as our class officers this year Gene - Iacoby, president: Donald Karcher, vice-presidentg Rosemary Rook, secretary-treasurer, Shirley Iacobs, student council representa- tive, and Richard Bland and Barbara Orians, candy managers. Here Comes Charlie was chosen as our first attempt at a class play. This was under the supervision of Miss Harrer. Much to our surprise, and to hers, the play was a success. Ardyth Byers and Gene Iacoby had the leads and were supported by a grand cast. c 1' f Coffpgnelgsholny Gorrrnxzn Bnos Our candy managers, with the cooperation of the class, have been doing splendidly selling cokes, hot-dogs, and popcorn. We have ahead ot us one of the most important events in the calendar ot the junior year. Yes, you have guessed .ite-the lunior-Senior Prom. Many members of the class belong to the various organiza- tions ot the school, such as the G-R, Hi-Y, chorus, band, and others. The Girl Reserve initiation was certainly a sight, and our only consolation is that next year will be our turn. Combining work and play, we are trying to make this a successful year--one to be remembered always: and We are thankful that we have the privilege ot being Iolly luniors. Helped team spirit with his humorous actions and re- marks. Always gave his best in every phase of the game. Expect great things from him next year. Donald Yingling . . . lunior Back . . . Yink . . . A dead- ly passer and a hard never-give-up runner. His runr-ing and passes to Ward give us a ground gaining offence that led to many victories Expect much next year if Uncle Sam doesn't interfere. George Walter . . . Senior End . . . Butch . . . First year out, he constantly spilled opposing plays and re- covered enemy fumbles. He was green at first, but de- veloped into a tough end as the season progressed. Eugene Ulrich . . . Iunior Back . . . Horse . . . A good fullback who could really crack that line. Could al- ways be depended upon whenever we needed a yard or two for first down. Expect great things next year. Richard Ward . . . Senior End . . . Clumsy had a knack for turning seemingly difficult passes into easy catches. Excelled in blocking punts and spilling the enemy backtield for losses. Morris Wonder . . , Bone Crusher . . . M. a group ot boys met in the Carey High School. They had been brought together by Mr. Mulholland, our principal, for the pur' pose of forming a new organization in Carey. These boys had met to join the National Hi-Y. They had agreed to adopt its platform, clean speech, clean sportsmanship, clean scholarship, clean living, and the purpose of the Hi-Y, to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community the high standards of Christian character. The constitution was drawn up and the Carey Hi-Y Club was born. Today, five years later the Carey f-li'Y Club is functioning strongly. It is strongly steeped in tradition, the Father and Son Banquets, the Easter program, Senior Farewell Dance, the Christmas program, which each year, draws a larger and larger crowd and is fast becoming one of the traditions of Carey, rather than ot the school. This year we have established a newspaper of the school activities for the year and sent it to past members in the service of our country and away from home. As long as there are boys away from home we are sure that they will want us to adopt the newspaper as a permanent custom. Nearly all of our past members are in the service: a large number are abroad on the fighting fronts: one of the original group is a prisoner of war. Soon those of the present chapter will be in service, but we who remain will do our utmost to see that there are bigger and better Hi-Y Clubs. 1944 CARYATID PICTUR LANNING MOTOR SALES - THE FORD GARAGE DICKENS STUDIO CAREY' OHIO Fostoria, Ohio TOP ROW: B. The award is given to twenty-five high school students who have, during the year, shown those qualities which are most essential to success in life. The faculty chooses these students by awarding so many points on the basis of scholarship, leadership, extra-curricular activities, church participation, cour- tesy, regularity, and school spirit. The four students ranking the highest have their names engraved on a plaque. The importance of this award is shown by the students' eagerness to attain the certificate and to have their names engraved on the plaque. Compliments of R A D I 0 S H O P nn L. E. AND Miis, c. c, TRUBY Lox CARVY, viiiicv INC xt QQ. Q The band started the l943-44 year with our fine director, Mr, Parfitt. We marched every morninq in hopes of improving our lines. We were successful!! We supported our team at every home football aame with a small but miahty band proudly led by Eva Wenner, head drum maiorette, and five new majorettes. A bell lyre was presented to the band by the Band Mothers and it was a areat added attraction durina our marching season. We went to only one out-of-town qame, Upper, because of qas rationing. At Upper we strutted down the field in a bomber formation. The officers elected this year were: president, Barbara lohnsonp vice- president, Patsy Laird, secretaryftreasurer, Marilyn Shane, librarian, lean Suminerell assisted by Ann Schirag manaaers, Lloyd l-lill and Donald Krebs. We practiced faithfully every morninq for the concert on lanuary 28th. lt was a mixed proaram with the band all out for home morale with The Victory Garden Suite. An Xylophone was added to the band tor the concert. We are all looking forward to our usual summer concerts. Mr. Parfitt's mixed chorus has made itself known to all the school through its musical talent. We started right off by singing for the religious chapels on Mondays. The assistants of Mr. Parfitt were Valeria Thomas, accompanist: and Floyd Gaster, student director, We have our practice on Monday and Thursday. This year there are too many girls for the number of boys, but we are still trying to draft the boys. The chorus sang for the Hi-Y Christmas program this year and appeared in a few other public performances. The great success of the chorus was due to the help of Mr. Parfitt, our musical director.
