ZAHN Left to Right: M. Vaughn, V. Kurtz, D. Long, E. Ulrich. During the past decade, schools throughout the land have made commendable strides in the broadening of their curricula. This widening process is not in the stricter sense a de- parture from the fundamentally academic, but more nearly a supplementation of it, by the adding of more liberalized and practical courses. ' ln keeping with such trends, what is termed The General Merit System was introduced into the Carey High School in l938. The general purpose of this system and its awards is that, rather than unduly emphasizing high scholastic attainment, more recognition be made of other attributes of prime importance in the building of character and citizenship. Each scholastic year the plan calls for the careful selection, by the faculty, of twenty- five students from the upper four classes who have earned the General Merit Awards. These pupils are chosen on the basis of so many points for such qualities as, scholarship, extra- curricular activities, regularity, courtesy, leadership, school loyalty, and church participation. The awards themselves consist ofa handsome, embossed certificate for each of the twenty-five winners. The certificate states the basis upon which the winning has been ac- complished and is signed by the Class Sponsor, the Principal, and the Superintendent. The four highest ranking students in the entire school, have their names engraved on a gold plate suspended from a beautiful and especially designed plaque. The attitude of the students toward the General Merit system is best demonstrated by the zealous care with which each of those earning a certificate has preserved it in the home in past school years. Many of the pupils place this token on a par with the high school diplo- ma itself. THE NATIONAL LIME AND STONE COMPANY AGRICULTURAL LIMESTONE AND HYDRATED FINISHING LIME First Row:A. Buckland, D. Selection is made on the basis of citizenship qualities as exhibited by the boys in school life during their four years of high school. This is one of the highest honors conferred on a senior boy. .This is an exclusive club, as the boys are sure to agree. They sit next to the dignitaries of the community and this importance is enjoyed by the Junior Kiwan- ians very much. They thank Carey Kiwanis far the honor which has been be- stowed upon them. War Economy has demanded many unusual types of printing. and releasing many of our men to the Armed Forces has resulted in maioi-,changes in our organization .... At the same time we are trying to maintain the best in quality and skilled craftsmanship. which has been an unwritten trademark of The Gray Printing Company for titty-tive years. ANNUALS F MORE THAN EVER BEFORE in the past twenty-five years is there a genuine need for a Yearbook. Very often annuals are the only substantial source of pic- tures and activities in which former students participated. lt is a history of U H MUHALE four years that will prove invaluable to the families and Sweethearts of the boys who are serving in the Armed Forces. We are proud to have had the privilege of beinq a part in the planning and execution ot this fine book. k Y, J THE EBAY PRINTING FOSTORIA, OHIO LARGEST Pnonucnns or SCHOOL ANNUALS IN 'rl-rl: srA'rE UUMPANY f . - '55 - - - I, it I 'li : , .
