September 1937 found sxxty one of us as new recrults expectmg to be ushered mto hrgh school w1th a fanfare and roll of drums Instead we soon learned that we were only buck prlvates and should be seen and not heard We were taught the essentrals of behavlor by our dnllmaster Colonel Hayden Fouts and chose as our pres1dent Ahce Wonder However you can t keep good men down and we raw recnnts were only a year 1n bemg pro- moted to the rank of corporal Thls t1me we had two drlllmasters Malor Iohn Llne and MaJor Iohn Tom Allce Wonder was once aga1n chosen presrdent and we pro qressed rcrpldly We were soon all made sergeants and passed on down the hall to the trammg camps of Generals Frances Mary Stover and Cloyce Wentllng Then we really began to be recogn1zed as amountmg to somethmg 1n the standlng army The new recrurts held us 1n almost as hlgh esteem as those classy captams and we enloyed l1fe generally showlng our sxgnet nngs etc Reld Burson was chosen to lead our ranks Our reglment sold refreshments to the other d1v1s1ons at communlty house entertalnments and even presented a play of our own Dotty and Daffy at one of the gatherlngs Wlth the revenue thus obtaxned we were able to stage a f1ne banquet and dance entrtled Moon Dreams for the captalns After comrng through the th1rd years tramlng wlth flymg colors fmally attammg the all xmportant rank of captam we reached the last camp that headed by Malor General Helen E Smlth How our heads swelled w1th pr1del We had amved at the top of the ladder talthough our ranks had conslderably dwmdled smce that memorable day 1n 19377 1f we could only qet past tl'llS last step 1nto the future' Thls t1me Tommy Sch1ra was chosen to lead us and hrs asslstants ln thls task were Reld Burson vxce presldent and Ioan Ruffmg secretary treasurer A general staff Wllh Ardme Gottfrled and Re1d Burson as 1ts heads was chosen to comp1le the records of the entlre camp and present them for the army s emoyment We also managed to stage a play Spnng Fever and emoyed xmmensely the prom glven for us by the sergeants The many emoyable fr1endsh1ps and memorable mcldences of camp l1fe w1ll long lmger 1n our memory the d1n of the band practxcmg in the morn rngs the odor of hamburger and omons 1ssu1ng from the mess hall about the flfth perlod and a suggeshon of cmcxent eggs or dead f1sh permeat1ng the halls dunng the afternoon chemlstry lab perlods the autumn football games wxth milllng cheer mg crowds the crowded qyrn durmg GXCIUHQ basketball games chapel pro grams the after hour gatherings of the gang-all these are stamped indellbly on our mlnds as we pass from the rank of captam ln the Carey H1 Trammg Camp out mto whatever UWGllS us ln the future THE PEOPLES BANK COMPANY CAREY OHIO GENERAL BANKING TIME AND SAVINGS DEPARTMENTS Member Federal Deposit Insurance Corporotlon Deposuts Insured Up To S5 OOO OO Coputol S40 OOO Surplus S60 OOO Undnvnded Proflts S20 OOO ' 1 1 1 I I . . 11 . 11 - 1 .
