At the opening of our season it seemed only s dream to have a chenmionship team. Each game showed -Liicd improvement which finally lui to our Goel,co-champions of The League of Six Ydtions. We are proud to share the honors with as worthy sn opponent as Calvert.Our greatest Upper San - and bitter rival, meet defeat at our hands. achievement was to see dusky, e long standing On September twenty-second, we journeyed to Arlington,our neigh- boring school.to initiate the footn bell season, It was more or less a practice game for both teams, el- though, we returned with the larg- er pert of the score, Both couches were filled with ideas for correct- ing weaknesses ond improving their respective teams. The following weekend was e test of our reel ability. We met Tiffin Calvert, lest yeer's holders of the League title and strong fev- orite fcr this year. For three quarters we plcyed n defensive game trying our best to hold them to the one touchdown scored in the first helf.In the last quarter Carey made one of those thrilling lost minute offensive drives zmich resulted in e touchdown before the spectators actually knew what had happened. The next week-end we had en open date but the following week-end is journeyed to Forest for the first time in sevcrel years. Al- though they were champions of the WHeert of Ohion Leegue last year, they offered us little opposition and again we returned to our native city victorious. The next Week saw another home lengue game played on our fields We met defeat from Crest- line by n smell margin lust yeur und we were determined to have our revenge. We expected s battle end we marked up another victory for the Royal Blue ond Whites Tho'gH they went home with the hole in e doughnut for o score. they left Myers with only rags for pontst In order to keep the former although they put up e good figqt. victories from going to our heed. it was necessary for Mr, Arnholt to calm us down e bit to keep us steady,nnd no our best. He promised us a gold football as a reward if we went through the season unde- featod.It was indeed e goal to work for. The gem with North Baltimore was chnrecterized by some brilliant punting by North haltimore's full- back, but the team was no match for our running stteck,nnd the lopsided score brought us one step nearer our goal, Wephqmimmiwxtlagmygme at NorwelkfThe trip was M366 in one of our own luxurious private buses equipped with the most comfortable cushion seats imaginable and with pillows and other conveniences for our benefit.Together with all these things end the charming vocelizing by our crooner, Herman, the trip seemed but a few minutes drive. Or am I wrong? In this game we exe- cuted the perfect kick-off play. With this touchdown and numerous others we chelked up our sixth con- secutive wins Upper!The biggest game of the yenriuur celebrution plans for Ar- mistice Day were shattered by a steady downpour of rain. Neverthe- less, e lerge crowd attended once more the bottle of the ages. Al- though Cerey seemed to have the edge, one can never tell about a game between such bitter rivcls,es- pecielly on e gridiron of mud. Even under adverse conditions the game ended l4-O in our favor, thus chnlking up our first victory against Upper in seven years. St. Wendelin,the finnl game to win before reaching our goal! St. Wendelin wus n school which we had never been able to defeat in ull of our uthletic relations. Their field was even in worse condition than ours was the week before.By the end of the first half our fellows, smeared with mire from head to foot were pretty much norried.How was it going to end? We just had to win this game,or lose all we had gained With new determinetion,but the some old mud, they began the last half. The end of the third quarter still sew n scoreless tie.In the lust few minutes when so many unexpected things happen, Dick come within inches of crossing the goel line lperhsps he did?J It was heart- breaking. Then, from out of nowhere come u beautiful pass from Messmer to Myers. We failed to make the extra point ond n few minutes later the game ended, giving us n record of no defeats and title to Co-Chsmf pions of the League of Siz Nations. FOOTBALL BANQUET The overwhelming success of this year's football team prompted the Kiwanis Club to give a memor- able banquet in the honor of its players and their able coach. A fcnst and program designed to please any man interested in good, clean, sportsmen-like football ns that played by Carey High's fight- ing Cnyugns, was their gift of np- preciation. The entertainment featured telks by two prominent men who have distinguished themselves in the field of football. Don McAllister of Toledo Waite, formerly of Miami High, Miami, Florida,nnd Coach Sny- gor, formerly of Heidelberg,snd now :ner of the, Snyger Sports Syn- dicate. ' , 1 These two able spokesmen gave very interesting talks on a subject which ' well could have been dedica- ted to this yeur's highly deserving grid warriors, WSportsmsnship,N The squad will long feel the influence which these speakers and their fes- cinating lectures had over their lives. Too, the excellent work of the High School orchestra and Miss Henth's Home Economics Department, was much appreciated by these hnle ond heerty young men. The crowning event of the ev- ening wus the presentation of gold footbells by Supt. Arnholt to Bere nerd Kitzler, Tony Jesco, Gaylord Patterson, Thelby Wentling, Edgar Keller, Richard Kitzler, Ralph Smi- ley, Edward Messn r, Forest Myers, Robert Heck, Robert Howard, Halle Turnbell, James Harris, and John Mullholand. The boys will treasure these achievement awards long after age has made them unnble to take part in this manly sport. OUR ASSISTANT COACH We should like to take this op- portunity to praise Mr. Spitler for his involuoble coaching of both the line und the Reserve squad.
