For each individual, the events that total up to make a memory are different, yet for all they are basically the same. Everyone creates his own catalog of thoughts from the color and noise around him. The mind reacts, absorbs, and relates a sensation to sadness, happiness, or anything in between. It becomes a map of time, to be traveled- again when the wanderer stumbles upon a familiar path. Gladly wolde he lerne, and gladly techef' - Chaucer When the separate worlds of teachers and students merged each day between 8:35 and 2:35, one wondered, in an at- mosphere such as this, whether the instructor or the pupil was doing the learning or the teach- ing. Both sides will admit they had much to gain from and give to each other. Through the eight daily class periods, all subjects taught were undercurrented with en- couragement for individual op- inions and creative thinking. Many teachers believed that opening a students mind to new ideas was much more im- portant than memoiizing facts. Through a government grant Stritch received new equipment such as records, films, and pro- jectors. These aids contributed more variation than ever in class programs. Three courses introduced this year, hwnanities, consumer ec- onomics, and world affairs, were successful and will be con- tinued. The new program studies booklet showed that many new courses, such as driver,s training, drafting, and geography would be open to interested students next year. Much to their relief, the stu- dents found that school was not all grind, grind, grind. When the last bell rang they rushed into the halls and hur- ried to . . . home? a job? Sometimes. But other activities crowded their way onto a schedule al- ready filled with books, home- work, exams, and term papers. Homecoming 1969 produced one happy queen, a gridiron victory, and a night of enchant- ment in the setting of the 50th state. One of the larger projects during the year was the Har- vest Festival, on which many parents, students, and faculty worked for weeks in order to make it a success. The musical, South Pacificf, was a combined effort of ad- visors, cast, and crews. Un- known avenues of drama had heen explored and conquered by curtain time opening night. Action and involvement made the year great for all who made the most of it. viii? gg X.. Q, I' 5 VJ' v ., . Sea. V s Talent and enthusiasm were major factors in the success of Cardinals who followed musi- cal pursuits. Under the leader- ship of Band and Choral Direc- tor Mr. Robert Stevens, hours of practice in and out of school resulted in varied presentations for students and public alike. The band and chorus per- formed at their annual concert, at assemblies, and in the musi- cal as cast or orchestra mem- bers. The majorettes and march- ing band took over the football field at half-time to provide entertainment, while the pep band stirred Stritch spi1'it in- doors at basketball games. David Crosjcan, Student Council president. stardwfellhment 72 Two major changes in stu- dent government appeared this year, one in Student Council, the other in the class oflices. To give more students the chance to actively participate in school affairs, it was voted that beginning this year the elected Linda Tscherne, vice-president. home room representative and his alternate would exchange places at second semester. There are now 46 official rep- resentatives instead of the form- er 23. Because of the end to the boy-girl segregation, the former policy for separate class officers was dropped. In the ,68-,69 school year, there were only the four main oi-lices for each class, and these were open to any qualified student. As the voice of the student body, the Council's main pur- pose was to serve as a go-be- tweenv for students and ad- ministration. It sponsored the annual Homecoming Dance, va- rious assemblies, and was active in functions of Toledo Area Stu- dent Council. The classes had their own projects during the year, such as booths at the Harvest Festi- val, Spirit Week, and the Junior-Senior Prom. IIIIIIUI S Unlike the relative carefree frosh and sophs, the juniors dis- cover that life can be trying at times - and that future suc- cesses donlt come automatical- ly, but one must work for them. With college and employ- ment hopes tied up in their grades, the juniors put their noses to the grindstone and be- gan to Work for their future goals. For many it was the Year of the Wheel, as they found new responsibilities, expenses, and Worries in driving a car - their own or their family's. The class of '70 has proved to be hard-working and mature, but they also have the par- ticular esprit de corps that marks them, and all the Cardi- nals, as special people. After four years, the seniors are ready to take their place in the outside World. They leave with mixed emo- tions. The seniors depart with a sincere desire for what is to come, but also with deep re- gret at leaving what has become a second home - and it's al- ways tough to leave home. But in a real sense the seniors never leave, for the mark of the Cardi- nal is indelible and will in- fluence the rest of their lives. The Class of ,69, at the end of an all too short road, says farewell to its alma mater and goes out to prove, once and for all, that the Cardinals can't be beaten. But regardless of your opinion of 1969, one fact re- mains-1969 was and is history. 1969 was historic for Cardinal Stritch also. It was the year of Sights and Sounds, Existence '69. This book is the' product of many hours of long, tedious work by the best staff an editor could ask for. My gratitude and sincerest thanks go: . . . to Sharon Wallake, whose able manage- ment and gentle prodding kept us going through good times and through bad. . . . to Karen Kistner, whose dedicated work did not stop at school, but continued on into the night at her home, making spotless page layouts. . . . to Christine Simko, whose beautiful prose, in the same class as Hemingway, Shaw, and Maugham, graces our pages, and whose hard work inspired us all. . . . to Bart Susor, the backbone and dynamic force behind the staff, who, labored mightily on class pictures. . . . to Ioe Abraham, whose talent, imagina- tion, and long hours in the darkroom, helped pro- duce the photographs that illustrate this book. . . . to Julie Szabo, whose steady persever- ance, and impeccably typed copy sheets, pulled us all through. . . . to Pat Flanagan and his intrepid busi- ness staff, without whose help the book would not have been produced. . . . and finally, to the man who made it all happen, Mr. Iames Kwiatkowski, our beloved ad- V1SOl'. I would also like tot extend my thanks for many, many favors to the following very special people: My Mom and Dad Msgr. Michael I.
