The year was a year of protest, and you were protesting. You started to realize that, there were a lot of things you didn,t like, and you decided not to put up with them any longer. You protested. It might not have been you, at the demon- strations, but it was your spirit. It was yours because you felt that something had to be done, you were the one to do it. There may have been a lot of people com- plaining about you, but you were doing more than they were. Even if nothing came of the marches, you showed everyone that you were interested enough to try. Civil rights was the most talked about and frightfully so. It was your generation that became unpreiudiced. You were awakened to the fact that no person was any better than another, regardless of race or creed. You didn,t believe in segregation. 1966 was a year of new events. Things were happening all over and advances ' were made in many new fields: One of the greatest was in science. Gemini 6 was sent into space and Lieutenant- Colonel White walked in space' for the first time. Another advance, closer to home for some of you, was the Second Vatican Council. It brought new rules and changed old ones. And it affected the Mass as can clearly be seen in your chapel. Heavyweight champion Cassius Clay defeated Floyd Patterson in a twelve-round bout. Although there were many advances in the year, there were also some setbacks. For many parts of the nation it was one of the worst winters ever. Shortly after Christ- mas, New York was hit by an added problem. Because of a short circuit somewhere in Toronto, the wild and bright city was struck dark.
