While you spent your days preparing for the future, the future was being prepared for you. Changes were being made throughout the world and the U.S.A. was involved in a good many of these things. This year, the Pope decided to see how things were going over here. For the first time in history, the Holy Father ojered sacrifice of the Mass on American soil. Also this year a great Indian leader died and another was elected. Mrs. Indira Gandhi succeeded Shastri as Prime Minister. Many hearings were held by the Senate to determine just how much efort you should give to the War in Viet Nam. Another problem this year was the crisis in the Dominican Re- public. The U. S. was rebelled against. But, this was all just a part of being a strong nation. And you, as a part of that nation, had to take the downfalls and the advances right along. with your country. The year was a year of protest, and you were protesting. You started to realize that, there were a lot of things you didn,t like, and you decided not to put up with them any longer. You protested. It might not have been you, at the demon- strations, but it was your spirit. It was yours because you felt that something had to be done, you were the one to do it. There may have been a lot of people com- plaining about you, but you were doing more than they were. Even if nothing came of the marches, you showed everyone that you were interested enough to try. Civil rights was the most talked about and frightfully so. It was your generation that became unpreiudiced. You were awakened to the fact that no person was any better than another, regardless of race or creed. You didn,t believe in segregation.
