You made the scene in the new look-the '66 look-the look. You were the stylesetter. The '66 styles you wore ranged from the classical skirts and sweaters to geometrically designed outfits by Courrege. You wore everything from white boots to bur- gandy loafers, to paisley ties. By Wednesday of each week posters began appearing. These were made by you to give you and your team the encouragement needed for a victory. Friday afternoon usually meant rallies. Your spirit shook the bleachers-many times too much- the gym, and the whole school. But it didn,t really matter as long as it did something for your team. By the night of the game you were really ready to ight. You, the spectator, were seen packing the stadiums-some as far. as 100 miles away and you were heard- were you ever heard. Many hours of practice and many injuries were survived for what sometimes turned out to be defeat instead of glorious victory. But you had the guts to forget these and come back with plenty of action on the grid-iron to accumulate your share of victory. You the coaches were looked up to and criticized by many before your day came to an end. Your fob was to keep your team in shape and to give them that extra push when morale was low. You made both friends and enemies - how many because of a cherished whistle- drillP - but you usually came out on top as soon as the season was over. As a member of the band, you kept the screamers, in time while you added some screams of your own. It VXNL V.,V .. fi my 'Q I ' x ner' ,J -rfsaug--nn.. , , V . The sound of cheers, boos, and dribbling balls rang loud and clear. Action was a key word for you this year in basketball. Al- though you lost half of your games, you always provided plenty of action. The games you played were always fast and stirring, seldom dull. You could shoot one basket and change the outcome of the whole game. Your passes flew from one end of the gym to the other, smacking into the hands of another player. You were wild! Even as a spectator you let the frenzy of the game get a hold on you and you never quite gave up. Coaches jumped onto the floor to call out last minute instructions. The crowds flew up row b row as the ll game moved down court. And the Pep Club and the Varsity S added their share of spirited action too. They also jumped and screamed but they unified the actions of the whole crowd. Ups v-5-A. Tennis shoes slapping the floor. Players slamming into one another. Bleachers rattling and crashing to the floor. The referees' whistles stopping everything cold. They followed every move, steps, double dribbles, elbows, these were never missed. The inevitable always came - Foul - on youf, Then, a moan from the crowd. It was a rare moment when silence prevailed. It usually fell during the close moments. These you remember all too well. So many games were lost by only a few points. But you accepted these and tried again with the same fury you had before. Your losses were dis- couraging, your triumphs great. They both were a part of you. The season ended and you came out even with a much wanted victory for a finish. You weren,t on the top, or on the - bottom. Changes were being made throughout the world and the U.S.A. was involved in a good many of these things. This year, the Pope decided to see how things were going over here. For the first time in history, the Holy Father ojered sacrifice of the Mass on American soil. Also this year a great Indian leader died and another was elected. Mrs. Indira Gandhi succeeded Shastri as Prime Minister. Many hearings were held by the Senate to determine just how much efort you should give to the War in Viet Nam. Another problem this year was the crisis in the Dominican Re- public. The U. S. was rebelled against. But, this was all just a part of being a strong nation. And you, as a part of that nation, had to take the downfalls and the advances right along. with your country. For they were truly yours. There may have been a lot of people com- plaining about you, but you were doing more than they were. Even if nothing came of the marches, you showed everyone that you were interested enough to try. Civil rights was the most talked about and frightfully so. It was your generation that became unpreiudiced. You were awakened to the fact that no person was any better than another, regardless of race or creed. You didn,t believe in segregation. Gemini 6 was sent into space and Lieutenant- Colonel White walked in space' for the first time. Another advance, closer to home for some of you, was the Second Vatican Council. It brought new rules and changed old ones. And it affected the Mass as can clearly be seen in your chapel. Heavyweight champion Cassius Clay defeated Floyd Patterson in a twelve-round bout. Although there were many advances in the year, there were also some setbacks. For many parts of the nation it was one of the worst winters ever. Shortly after Christ- mas, New York was hit by an added problem. Because of a short circuit somewhere in Toronto, the wild and bright city was struck dark. These and many other happenings each added something to your life. 63 s H Q98 i ,Y em' 1: T ,Li T'-:85 Miles High, Gemini csc' wit fp 'EQ' on .149 ' . cf 1.1-0,3 YW Gif' ri 51 F ax Q L., 'Is' if XX A A, - . It was becoming a new Church, a modern one. You sensed these changes as you celebrated the Liturgy each week. Your chapel was barely five years old - and this year it changed. The altar was turned so you could see the actions of the priest and participate more easily. The communion rail disappeared. You no longer knelt to receioeg you now stood-people and altar came closer together. The Mass changed also in other ways. You now placed your own host in the ciborium and you carried the ' bread and wine to the priest as your part in the sacriyice. You sang more and you sang together as a unit. You became part of the great whole-You and God. And people were asking, Is God dead? And Up 7 ' new il,- Q -. 1.4 .1-r.'gN,., '3- 'NMA 4 I I .off Most of your day was spent in class. Unknown to some it was your main purpose for being here. The day held eight periods- eight diferent classes. Each was separate and distinct, yet all were united by one main factor - a giving of knowledge. Some classes were completely serious but most held a few moments of fun. There were times when you were happy with the proceedings and there were times when you thought the buzzer would never sound. Your class schedule could range anywhere from physics to study- halls. You chose your courses and it was up to you to find the best ones. Some may have been harder and taken more time and effort, but when you came out on top in these, you knew you had achieved something. It wasn't the grades that mattered though, it was how much you put into each class and how much you tried These were what made you excell. These were what made it more than just a classg these were what made it your class. You, the underclassmen took part in athletics every day. You attended phys ed classes and under the direction 0 Miss f Sheibley and Mr. Glinka, you did any number of diferent things. You boys held wrestling and basketball intramurals X and in the spring there were achievement tests. Points were given for each feat and you gained recognition. On the west side of the building things were moving too. Soft- ball and basketball games were played between your diferent squads. You too competed in a physical fitness test. Tumbling was one of your favorite sports. And you all tried to accomplish such great feats as standing on your head, flips and pyramids. Some of you may have thought these completely impossible at first, but you soon changed thatg timewise these classes were a small part of your day - small but important. They gave you what you needed to make you move-and you moved. wf 4' . v-A . s 1- f ,,,- 3? '1 L'1r x..!, 3 LF, V, I 13 ' f ,. A A I r LA ..,- ..- -.',,..-qv. L ,,. xv ,iz di 1. That calendar must be wrong! It can't be time for another deadline. That was the cry heard from Room 117 this year,as the staff of Existence '66 started to work. A second cry, well, really a plea, was sent out to all who would listen, HELP. To answer this call all volunteers had to have two virtues: courage and understanding. It took real courage and lots of understanding to work around people like Tim Weidner, who, when sent out for hot chocolate, came back with cold chocolate milk. Or Joe Falise who raved whenever his name was typed wrong. Or Mary Weber, who picked up the habit of talking to herself. And Bill Berry, who lives near Eckel Junction, on the B. G. Campus Exls'rENcE 'ee All kidding aside, I want to thank these wonderful people who made many long days seem shorter and many disappointments easier to take. lim glad we were together to laugh and joke our way out of our problems. I appreciate the backing to the staff of Existence '66, given by the entire school. And the gentle pushing of our advisor, Mr. K, whose help could never be repaid by mere words. I think we all agree that we couldn't have made it without him. Thank you all for making this a happy and important year for me.
