Girls ' Track team of individuals The only cheers that were heard were from other teammates, parents, and the coach. Although the girls ' track team had very few fans they had pride and never lost their determination. This personal drive was seen in Erin Peters who, among others competed in the 1981 state track meet. The team held practice every day at Twin Lakes High School. The girls practiced forty-minute dis- tance runs, speed intervals and twice a week worked on field events such as long jump or shot put. Hurdle and high jump techniques were perfected after hours of practice, too. Senior Megan Mosser explained, Track makes you disci- plined bacause you have to push yourself at practice. You don ' t have a team to fall back on if you slack off. Each member of the team worked hard and their effort was evident in the meets. After the gun went off and the girls came out of the blocks, every bit of energy was used until the end of the race. Each girl had the determination to do her best whether she was competing against three others or fifteen others. The cheers they heard in their minds kept them going throughout the season. 94 SPORTS TOP: Team Captain Jennifer Ash crosses the finish line to a first place victory. Baseball It ' s not all fun and games Baseball Is not all fun and games, in fact it is hiard work! The 1981 baseball season started out with rakes and shovels for all the team members. Before the season started off, the team was required to repair the ailing field. Senior Guy Fischer, claimed, It was a real pain . . . , but I did not mind doing it because it had to be done. Coach Jack Kokinda felt that the players were a very close knit team. A sense of unity and sports- manship was bound in their person- alities and characteristics. Through hard work and sacrifice, the team members comprised mostly of sen- iors, turned out to be a family of great potential. Probably the most memorable part of the team ' s afternoon practices was working with professional ba- seball player Bill Gullickson, Expos pitcher, who had moved into an apartment near the school for the duration of spring training. One day the young pitcher walked over to Newman ' s practice field to check out the team. He struck up a conversa- tion with the coach and players and became their friend and unofficial pitching coach. With a model to follow, the team ignored the fact that practice was hard work and strove for the same professionalism displayed by Bill Gullickson. RIGHT: Darren Mandell ' s first hit of tfie season was a home run! OPPOSITE TOP: Senior Guy Fisher, and Coach Jack Kol inda talk matters out with senior pitcher, John Groth.
