They had a good season but with eight freshmen and soph- omores on the varsity team, they were . . . Shooting for the future For the Varsity Girls Basketball team the 1980-81 season proved to be a year of rebuilding. With four upperclassmen the teann employed eight freshmen and sophomores. To the fans in the stand the first month of the season seemed to be one of discord for the team. Captain Dorothy Panton, senior, attributed the problem to the fact that the team was young and it took time to adjust to one another. The team pulled together after Christmas and their true ability was proved as they fought to the end whether they were winning or losing. The junior varsity team played a very competitive season finishing with a record of 8 wins and 5 losses. The team ignored its youngness and finished the season with an overall record of 8 wins and 9 losses. Dorothy commented, the season had its ups and downs but in the end we realized the meaning of teamwork and pulled together to make it a successful year. Boys ' Soccer They kept the ball rolling. The recent rise in the popularity of soccer has spread to the always well-manicured Cardinal Newman fields. The growth of the sport at Newman has been evidenced by the continuing progress towards the building of a winning program. Coach Bum Steffes attributed the rise to prominence to the maturity and enthusiasm of both the players and the mentor. The first tryout attracted seventy prospects and after two weeks the team was finally cut down to twenty-five enthusiasts. Members of the team had different reasons for playing soccer. Freshman Rich Dalessio said he liked a sport besides football which involves con- ditioning and contact , and junior Ed Galbraith joked: I played for the money and the glory; mainly for the money. Senior Dennis Redcard Cleary loved the contact, as evidenced by his all-time school record for ejections from games. These and other reasons led to Newman ' s rise in respectability on the soccer field. Their final record was 8 wins, 8 losses, and 8 tied games.
