Boys ' Cross Country They ' re off! AA thorough warm-up had been completed; the muscles were tuned and the blood was pumping. A whistle summoned the runners to the starting line. The race director shouted last minute course direc- tions. The tension mounted as the runners became silent in anticipa- tion. Bang! The race began! Cheers from exuberant spectators could hardly be heard by the pack of runners as they strode out, elbow to elbow, to acquire a leading position. For the boys ' cross-country team this scene was a common occurrence. It took place at each meet, whether the race had 30 or 130 participants. The tension and the cheers were always there. To be physically prepared for their three-mile race, the team had to train accordingly. They ran an average of seven to eight miles every day with speed incorporated into this mileage. Coach Jim Maginn explained the theory behind these demanding practices: Hard work is the only thing that pays off in a race. When the race was over and the crowds had departed, the runners could be seen taking a postrace warmdown run. The sea- son ended in late fall and the boys were ready for a rest. Team Captain Joe Metzger summed up the season by stating: No matter what our rank ended up to be, we all worked hard and that ' s what makes the difference.

Girls on the run !t. »IM vK Hour after hour, day after day, they ran miles through the heat or sometimes even during the rain. The girls ' cross-country teams demon- strated their ability and dedication with an eighth place team finish in the state of Florida and Jennifer Ash, senior, placed ninth.
