r Eight o ' clock a.m. was the beginning of life at Cardinal Newman High School. Students rushed to their lockers and asked themselves, Is this C day or B day? For those who were always on time, the day began with a prayer and the pledge to the flag. Some students, however, were not blessed with a built-in alarm clock and had to suffer through the pains of explaining to the dean the whys and how comes of being late. Although most mornings were filled with routine activities, occasionally the not so routine, due to club initiations or holiday celebrations, would occur. For instance, some mornings you may have run unexpectedly into an animal such as a rabbit, mouse or cat. Meanwhile, in the Central Office, the administration and secretaries hurried about answering phones, counting tardies and absentees, and sorting through the vast amount of paper work. Piescik (photo above) riding a hydroslide became a favorite summer sport. They were typically Floridian activities: rollerskating along the ocean wall in Palm Beach, wind surfing with friends at Riviera Beach and sailing on the Intracoastal Waterway. But all too soon the suntans faded, and weeknights were spent studying. OPENING 3
